Headliners have been announced for the August bank holiday weekend festival known unofficially as Reading & Leeds, officially as The Carling Weekender.

Headliners are as follows:

Friday 22nd Reading, Saturday 23rd Leeds:
Linkin Park & Blink 182.

Saturday 23rd Reading, Sunday 24th Leeds:
Blur & White Stripes.

Sunday 24th Reading, 22nd Leeds:
Metallica & System Of A Down.

Also announced this afternoon were 16 more bands, but their day, slot and stage times are still to be announced, as are the rest of the bands that will make up the festival. Those bands so far officially confirmed are: Sum 41, Beck, Placebo, Doves, The Streets, Elbow, The Music, Courtney Love, Good Charlotte, Polyphonic Spree, The Datsuns, AFI, The Mars Volta, Hundred Reasons, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and The Cooper Temple Clause.

As previously announced, tickets are on sale now, and at £95 + plus booking fee for a weekend pass will be getting towards that big £100 level. Both the Reading and Leeds sites have still to gain an event licence, with the Leeds site being touted at Bramham Park as well as last year's Temple Newsam 'riot' troubles.

For hits of last year's festival as and how DiS saw it, check here for last year's previews and here for our reviews.

As usual bands will be confirmed over the next few months leading up to the festival, with the final lineup changing to the very last second, so make sure you keep checking back here for further updates when we get them...

DiScuss: Glasto's sold out, so Reading to follow? Do you know who else will be playing? Will Courtney Love have another fight on her way to the UK? Are you in any way excited about this lineup?

That line up is pants. More than pants infact.

Re: Reading & Leeds Lineup announced

everyone always says that at this stage.. and then in a month or two when they announce the rest of the bands everyone will go "woo its amazing"..

Re: Reading & Leeds Lineup announced

yep. he's right.
and as IF you're going to have a bad time.
quit yer moaning woman

Re: Reading & Leeds Lineup announced

This does look like it could be the first year in about 5 where the line-up doesn't improve on the previous year. I know it is early days, but even the early line-up last year looked good, and the final bill was fantastic.

I see the 'stop moaning' side of the argument as well, because I know I'll be going and I know I'll enjoy it, but you take my point... so far, so average. And how come the rock day has spread to the Friday as well? Linkin Sodding Park? I like tradition - give me indie schmindie on Friday, poppy rock on Saturday and raaaaaaaaawk! on Sunday.

Cheers,
Damian.

PS. Seriously though, Linkin Park, what did we do to deserve that? Can they REALLY hate us that much?

Re: Reading & Leeds Lineup announced

Arab Strap, that's what Reading is about for me, another Bobby Conn hit would be good too, but where can they go from headlining the new bands (ha) tent? mid afternoon 2nd stage suits neither of them well

ollie.

Re: Reading & Leeds Lineup announced

yeah, where's the goddamn indie?
WHERE ARE THE CARTER USMs AND INSPIRALs, DAMMIT?

Re: Reading & Leeds Lineup announced

We've got Courtney Love

I don't care about anything else. She will be most followed...

Re: Reading & Leeds Lineup announced

Well last year's Reading was one of my favourite festivals that i've attended, and thats a fair few over the years. It had a great line up, but more to the point I had a great time. Met up with a bunch of old mates that all hadn't seen one another for quite a while and we got wasted and had a laugh. We're all up for it again this year. There maybe hipper festivals out there, but Reading always does it for me and I'll happily shell out the £100 for the pleasure.

Re: Reading & Leeds Lineup announced

this years line ups are rubbish they shud have betta bands

Re: Reading & Leeds Lineup announced

you're commenting on last years line-up.

Reading & Leeds Lineup announced

This line up is severely poor.
Courtney will be fantastic, however.

Re: Reading NEARLY SOLD OUT!!

Grr... why do all the *internal* DiS page links in this article link to *external* browser windows. Very, very, very annoying!!!

Re: Reading & Leeds Lineup announced

So that you dont get moved to a different page half way through reading the article. Tis standard practise y'see.

Re: Reading & Leeds Lineup announced

'tis shit practise, and not at all standard for *internal* site links.

People are capable of pressing 'back', y'know. If they want a link to be opened elsewhere, they can right click on it, or just hold Shift as they click. You should only force people's links to open in new windows when they're straying from DiS, to make sure they come back. No need to do that for internal links - it's as if DiS is fighting with itself. 'Tis silly.

God that line-up is rather lack-lustre isn't it?

is anyone excited by this lineup?

nope. how many of the same bands are they going to get back, year in year out? The lineup over the last few years has read like a revolving door. Blink 182 as headliners may make sense from a commercial viewpoint but come on... maybe i'm just getting too old for this festival but it seems like the organisers need to get some balls and put smaller, newer and ultimately more exciting bands on the main stage to make things more interesting instead of dullards like blur - quite frankly, who cares about them anymore?
