It has come to my attention that 'metal' is the most dismissed of all styles of popular music.
Why don't you like metal?
Is it too loud? Are they playing too fast or too slowly? Is it too 'over the top'? Is it due to the 'lack of women' (my friend gave that as his reason?!)
This is a fun survey. Answer honestly.
Maybe helpful people can chip in to address your concerns.
I don't mind some metal bands
But alot of it is quite generic, and has too much anger, which I can't relate to.
i can't relate to it either
never paid attention to lyrics (what do most metal bands sing about? death and destruction?)
This thread is going to lead to
some sweeeeeeping generalisations. But here's mine: I've always thought of metal as too unsubtle and OTT for me.
Yes
Often the lyrics are printed in the cd/record insert. It's not all death and destruction though. It could be how angry they are at the government, or the words could just be gutteral noises to accompany the intense music like Fantomas or Obituary. Anything goes really.
therapyrock
sounds like you should like metal.
I'd consider therapy?
A rock/rock 'n' roll band.
The same can be said for any style though really
For every mclusky there are 50,000 Razorlits for example. Like anything you have to look to find diamonds in the dog poo.
Thankfully Metallica have invented St. Anger to rid the metal world of anger.
dunno why i'm replying
because i like SOME metal.
i reckon it's the stereotypical fans that put some people off.
i remember restlessboy saying he couldn't listen to metal, ever.
yeah that's right, restless, I'M CALLIN CHU OUT MAING!
i know a guy back at home
who's into industrial grind emo.. or something like that. and it's the worst music i've ever heard. it's really hc but with 'emotional/love' lyrics. painful.
industrial grind emo
...?! I love genre's I haven't heard before. Sunshine pop is still the best tho.
it's AWFUL.
i'll send you his myspace link if i find it. it'll hurt your ears.
like every genre,
metal has good bands and shit bands. Plus it benefits from having a multitude of sub-genres, with some more likely to be inherently good than others.
Plus, I don't know any uplifting metal bands
Sometimes I need something a bit happier first thing in the morning!
depends what you define
as metal really. i mean, would System of a Down be considered metal? I like them, have got three of their albums.
I don't mind Rammstein either, I find them quite comedy, and you cant beat a bit of Iron Maiden, yeahh!!
you should try dragonforce
they are HILARIOUS.
yeah my
mate james said they were brilliant. I couldn't tell if he was being sarcastic but they sound funny as. Hammerfall are quite comedy as well. Now, battle metal is great!
I have seen
Dragonforce. They are as silly as a sock full of goblins. And the sound was so bad I just had to watch their fingers and imagine what the lead guitar sounded like.
sweeping generalisations..
angsty teenagers, fat old men, screamy waste of space lyrics, PREDICTABLE music. wankety wanting wank.
:oP
Yes yes yes
sweeping. Most importantly the least predictable bands i've heard have been metal bands. Look at the Dillinger Escape Plan. Initially it will probably just sound like noise but after a while you realise how clever and intense it all is.
Would you ever believe a band called Pig Destroyer has poetic lyrics about romance? They dooo!
oh yeah and
while you're here, mugx3:
i bought stoner witch! it's not bad, starts well but kind of trails off. where next, oh melvins guru? i think i might go for 'hostile..".
Is it Magic Pig Detective?
Three minutes of pointless noise before start of song. Hmm. Have a good listen to Shevil though. It's like good post rock or something. As for the long thing at the end, they often do that. It takes a bit of getting used to but i've come to enjoy the long songs the most.
I would go Hostile Ambient Takeover aye. It flows better and has more rock.
i dont mind some metal
but most of it is shit. Especially the popular ones (i cant stand trivium) and the bands that play wacken. I do however like a lot of the stuff which is on the Southern Lord roster. After seeing him with Sunn, i got the Xasthur album on vinyl and it is really good. Other one man Black Metal artists such as Leviathan are also quite good.
go for Houdini
or stag.
If you think Stoner Witch trails off
you'd be really disappointed with Houdini! The first half is the best thing ever and the second half is shit!
sweet
H.A.T it is then. i shall keep you informed of my voyage of discovery!
name some metal bands
because i don't know wut is 'metal'.
then we can answer.
that's probably the best way instead of getting into a massive genre debate.
Magnetic fields-69 love songs
all you need. ditch the shit metal.
eeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?????????
Is that a lyric
or do you need a poo.
Eat some shreddies.
no, metal lyrics go
HHHNNNNNNNNUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH
in general. maybe metal bands do just need a poo!
i'm going to post hatebreed some senokot.
i like metallica
but mainly due to their comedy value. For example James Hetfield ends most lines with "AHH". Can you imagine what an everyday conversation with him would be like?!
"Hello, my name is James HetfieldAH. My band is MetallicaAH. I am the lead singerAH. I also play guitarAH. Buy our albumAH". and so on......
I loved Metallica
when I was 16, but that only backs up my teeny angst point.
I think I've been tainted by lots of shit metal myspace bands trying to add me and they're all so fucking appalling.
You definitely have problems like that
with indie bands too. There is something that makes people biased against metal. Maybe it's the beards and hoodies.
A lot of popular metal is funny
and there's nothing wrong with finding it funny. At all!
Metallica might be unknowingly hilarious, but a lot of metal bands have a sense of humour! A good sense of humour even.
Check out some Power Metal stuff like Luca Turilli for crazy Dungeons and Dragons inspired action.
Velvet hell!
I had no idea anyone else had even heard of Luca Turilli. His stuff's corking! Funny, perhaps, but that doesn't mean it's not good musically.
Exactly
when I first heard 'Black Dragon' I thought it was the best thing ever. That medieval breakdown in the middle. Man I love it so much.
It comes across as an incredibly insular genre
I feel so often that metal fans treat metal bands in much the same way people who don't tend to buy CDs will like all those Colplay/Keane-apeing crap Indie bands.
The difference is that I think you have to have some interest in music to like metal, so I find it depressing to watch what are often great musicians play to people who can appreciate music...yet everything is such obvious fucking chord structures and ideas.
There must be some really great ones out there. I hope there are, anyway. Most people can appreciate those early Metallica albums but maybe it's hard to get into it when you see it live?
i personally
dont like it because it often comes across as uninspired and bland in the songwriting sense. i get the feeling that the musicians are too busy seeing how many notes they can play a second than working how to write good songs. and the anger is annoying, chill out.
Not really true
as many metal bands such as Kyuss and Down are strictly metal (or stoner rock) and they're chilled but have fast sides too.
Kyuss had a fun side.
Tool certainly do: Maynard (lead singer) once tried stand up AND Bill Hicks (a God) planned a double head line tour with Tool before Hicks died.
Sure, their is this angry side, but that's an influence from the roots side of rock/metal which is the blues. So, just as the volume is up to 11 rather than an acoustic, the lyrics are more angry than "If the blues was Whiskey, I'd stay drunk all the time" (Brownie McGhee.....awesome).
AND the solos come from this blues side.
So there is justification for that.
But some is just plain angry.
Thats not really the case...
though dude.
As Mugx3 mentioned up there, Dillinger EP are certainly not simple obvious chord structures, the same with Converge and many other bands of that ilk. On first listen it is certainly very challenging, but then you get in deeper and you realise just how much is put into creating the music, it starts to mean more and it gets you rocking the fuck out. Which is always fun. I like all genres, i'm sure you know that, but I do see myself as a metal fan primarily...
And of course there are bad, run-of-the-mill metal bands, but isn't this the case in every genre?
For every bad metal band... there's a Kasabian.
I hate metal
It's for angry 15 year olds and and mouth-breathing unmarried computer technicians
this
is why I miss your posts.
it just sounds
very unimaginative.. no matter how hard any metal fan would try to convince you otherwise.
You clearly aren't listening to the right stuff though.
Cause, without meaning to sound like i'm having a go, that is such a stupid thing to say. Its not just picking up a guitar and churning out the same old shit, my band have spent months writing the same two songs.
It's just as easy to for me to say that Indie music is unimaginative...
sorry
i meant to say that it sounds unimaginative to me. it just doesn't evoke much emotion.
thats it!
all the metal ive listened i dont respond to emotionally. its that "look at how fast i can play guitar" shit and its annoying.
Seriously if that's all you've heard...
Go listen to some Pelican.
Or Red Sparowes.
Trust me...
i just had a very quick listen
to pelican on myspace and this is not what i would think of as 'metal'. what i had in mind were bands like kreator, sepultura, slayer and so on..
Hmm that's not really metal though is it?
More post rock, no? Especially Red Sparowes
yep
that's what it says on their profile.
are muse metal? i can't stand that band.
Well no not particularly...
But it is a sub-genre of metal.
I'd call it more post-metal than post-rock.
OK bad examples. Try converge or isis or mastodon.
:)
true metal fans dont like converge
cos theyre too hardcore, and not metal enough.
:)
I like Converge.
thats all that matters.
try
http://www.purevolume.com/jesu
or
http://www.myspace.com/edenmaine
Soon to be R.I.P. Not fair.
troodat.
it was good while it lasted, though, and there's always their farewell gig... http://www.drownedinsound.com/event/view/15562
the support bands are good too.
*removes plug from socket*
you clearly don't hate it all, though.
you seem to be in a similar situation as me - like mastodon/TODD, dislike crap.
There is hope
Jim Carrey is a huge fan of Cannibal Corpse and invited them onto the set of Ace Ventura. This is a fact.
bjork likes cannibal corpse too
i remember her mentioning them in an interview with zane lowe.
i love metal
but if you want to see why i don't like it sometimes read the comments here:
http://roadrun.com/blabbermouth.net/
some metal fans are narrow minded morons ... but that doesn't mean that the bands are all like that
But again...
what difference does that make to me posting this link:
www.nme.com
to me its the same with all genres.
i dunno
ive never seen more angry posts than in a blabbermouth thread about a big band
not that i care, i think metal is ace
:)
You think right.
You gannin to Download?
can't afford it
:(
:(
:(
:'(
go see clutch for me ... please
Yes, yes I will.
Then i'll come on here and tell you they were shit.
Just to make you feel better... (cause they probably won't be shit)
spoken like a true friend
:D
watch sepultura get added to the bill soon, i really wanna go :'(
Nah...
Yeah probably. You know with Soulfly being there... the makings of a one-off reunion show?
that nah was a bit random
wasn't it.
soulfly are gonna be there too ?
this is horrible, this is the first festival for ages where i've wanted to see more than half the bands on the bill
check the site.
loads more bands added..
wow
it looks like they went back in time found me when i was 16 and asked what my dream festival would be ... then threw in a few trendy new acts as well
:)
its looking good man.
now i really really want to go
perhaps i'll work extra hard to finish all my university work over easter ... then i'd have the start of the summer free
You should come.
Who cares about money.
I'll sneak you in.
I love that site
if you don't read the comments it's really funny sometimes. It's like the metal equivalent of Heat magazine. Axl Rose sighted at airport! Ex GNR drummer Steven Adler sacks entire band onstage!
hee hee
New Metallica=Not Metal
Lars=Fag
Fans of new metallica=Not Metal
Fans of Lars= Full on ignorant, loser fag
that's us told...
i don't like metal
cos it's fucking gay
amen
yes
i also hate the quasi-religiousness
Whereas
I hate homophobia. We're a happy fam-i-ly...
LOL
Raz = gay.
i'm going to sue you
for your life
DO IT!
hmmm
well, I like the odd metal song.
Generally though, they all have guitars that sound like I spilt milk on their carpet and that they're really really really angry with me.
They are
METAL is an acronym: "make evil tantrums (to make) andreas livid"
wow!!!
I knew it!! They're all after me! Especially the metal bands that smell of sweat constantly.
Oh yeah, I don't like metal because it's a bit smelly.
I like music to have some groove
or a bit of a fun riff or touching vocals.
metal posseses none of these traits.
Simple
so u like
love me like you by the magic numbers. theyre shit
