I've been wondering about this for a while: is indie/rock DJing the same as "normal" dance club DJing, with beat matching on vinyl and so on? Or is is it more a case of just choosing and playing the songs that are going to go down well? I wouldn't mind starting a bit of DJing, although I'm not quite sure what is involved... weird as that may sound.
As for classic songs:
Purple Haze/Voodoo Chile - Jimi Hendrix
London Calling - The Clash
Tomorrow Never Knows - The Beatles
Debaser/Monkey Gone To Heaven - Pixies (do they qualify as classic?)
Most Ramones singles would go down well.
Whole Lotta Love - Led Zep
On a dancier tip, Windowlicker (Aphex Twin) or The Chemical's Setting Sun.
I wouldn't necessarily pick *all* these myself but I think your average alt/indie fan would go for most of them:
Sonic Youth - Teenage Riot
Pixies - Debaser
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Radiohead - Creep
Stone Roses - Fools Gold
Manics - Faster
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Talking Heads - Once In a Lifetime
Sex Pistols - Anarchy In the UK
Big Star - September Girls
The Smiths - This Charming Man
New Order - Blue Monday
The Clash - London Calling
Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
if your at an indie club then would you have 'Transmission' or something, rather than 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'? don't know about everyone else but if you DJed that i might burst into tears or collapse or something.
Early Manics is a good call, 'Motown Junk', 'Motorcycle Emptiness', some of their covers...
or something.
And if things are getting really desperate, 'Song 2'...
>>don't know about everyone else but if you DJed that i might burst into tears or collapse or something. <<
I wouldn't say it's a depressing song, really. It's more sad and tender than it is desperate. It usually goes down really well at the end of an evening. Besides it's still pretty danceable anyway.
keep 'em coming kids. already had the majority of these but it's cool seeing what everyone would like to hear. i'm going to make mix cd's of these "classics" just to leave in the dj booth for whenever anyone feels guilty for playing too much self-indulgent mush.

'Interzone' is a winner.
