Frankly amazing Japanese quartet Mono are to release their fourth studio album, You Are There, through Temporary Residence on April 10th.
Like their last long-player, Walking Cloud..., You Are There was recorded by Steve Albini. Unlike its predecessor and the album before that, One Step More And You Die, You Are There is short on bombast and fury, instead emphasising the band's more delicate complexities. There's plenty of cello and more than a dash of emotive piano, put it that way.
Contrived, though, is something it's not: we know because we heard it this morning, and we're not ashamed to say we arrived at work with something of a lump in our throat. Track four, 'Are You There?', is likely to have your heart leaping clean out of your mouth; that, or it'll simply pop in your chest at the beauty of what's going on in your ears.
So, to summarise: get excited. Clicky here for more information.

i want this
!
Awww...I like bombast and fury, specially when Mono do it, EITS were the quiet ones, Pelican the heavy, Mono sat nicely inbetween...
I'm sure it'll be genius anyway.
The album is sitting on my desk
Do I dare play it?
sex it up
If you like their existing records you will love it... it is a lot quieter in places though.
When it booms, it BOOMS.
!
Good, thats why I liked Mono, when they kicked in, they kicked out, lots of feedback and distortion in a not-Mogwai-rip-off way...
Is it dark? Like, Lost Snow dark?
Just listened...
...'The Flames Beyond The Cold Mountain' (up for download on their site).
Different class.
its also
the worst of the four full length songs on the album. in my opinion
Jordan*
fantastic album
better than godspeed in places.
this album is so good
I have had You Are There on repeat pretty much all week. The 4th track "Are You There?" along with the final track "Moonlight" are pretty much the best things Mono have ever done.
There is no shift from the typical Mono sound which Albini was probably responsible for. The slow build ups, distortion and delay make this an essential post rock album and it sits well next to their last 2 records.
This album...
...is definitely a contender for my album of the year. It just sounds so beautiful, so tragic, so fucking loud.
I disagree with the "less fury" discription though. Most of the songs just rise from quiet sadness into epic, phoenix-like release. I could talk pretentious shite about this album for a long time.
website
is fucking beautiful.
as are
the tunes. i like this and want to hear more.
I also need...
...to say 'Yearning' is one of the best things I've ever heard.
They need to go on tour again.
I bought
Under The Pipal Tree and One Step More And You Die plus a cracking tshirt from them at their last Glasgow gig. Coastal had already copied Walking Cloud And Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered And The Sun Shined for me. Really looking forward to this and any forthcoming gigs.
Will be
buying this album for sure!!
It sounds
like the albums resembles the track "Yearning" from the split with Pelican. Sounds good.
