It's possible that legendary New York punk club CBGB (website) will relocate to the bright lights of Las Vegas, following an increase in rent at their home of 315 Bowery.
Owner Hilly Kristal has been looking at moving to another part of New York, but advances around the five-million-dollar mark have made the idea of moving to Vegas a more appealing one. The campaign to save the club from closure is a long-running one, but with no agreement reached the club will have to close at the end of October.
Unless, of course, it does up sticks: Kristal has said that the mayor of Las Vegas has been very helpful in looking at moving to the city. Further NYC properties are being considered, though.
DiScuss: Moving cities, sounds a bit odd doesn't it? Has anyone been to CBGB? Apparently it's rarely host to bands with talent, these days...
am going to NY in September
just in time then!
CBGB = NYC
It would only be CBGB by name if it moves to the soul-less waste that is Vegas.
CBGB's...
What's the point of lionising the unobtainable... long live CBGB's but I don't need to go there, there's plenty venues I'd rather be at in Blighty.
And talking of legendary venues I'd like to have seen MC5 in the whatsit ballroom in Detroit but hey you can't have everything.
Down here in the West Country we have The Cooperage, The Cavern, The Palace, Aura, Moles, Louisianna why do I need to fly 3000 miles... I don't.
ugh
cbgb is cbgb, i've not been myself but from what i've heard surely theres no replicating that atmosphere
novel solution
all these bands that have made fucking millions who were first seen at cbgb, why dont they club together and help pay the rent to keep it in the same placeor is that too much effort for a person who fucking made you all. makes me sick. debbie harry all the ramones alive today, talking heads, etc why not give some of their welth to the cause??
you mean instead of korn
playing a benefit show (which they did) they should donate some of their excessive wealth ?
good plan !
Shit hole
Although it's rooted in the history of punk and played an integral part in its development etc etc, there's no getting away from the fact that it is a disgusting shit hole. The people that work there now are penarses too.
Will they be known
as the CBGB Dons?
i've been
it was really dark and my wife's glasses steamed up. when the waitress came over to take our drinks order she jumped coz she hadnt seen her, and knocked her tray of drinks over. there was a crap hardcore band playing on the stage. i necked my beer and we left.
It was
awful when I was there. Living off a memory, might as well have been a theme bar.
Bless CBGBs
I went during the day and just sat in the bit next door, which I assume is the OMFUG of the name, drinking and looking at the merchandise. I got a belt and a plectrum.
Yeah
I've been a few times and it's a fucking cool shitty dive with decades of stickers covering every available surface... but no, not seen any good bands there.
Gutted it's shutting though.
Re: dale
CBGB OMFUG stands for:
Country, Bluegrass and Blues and Other Music For Uplifiting Gormandisers
So it's all one place, just with a strange name.
cheers for that, always wondered
if this happens
i reckon if CBGBs moves to vegas, it'll end up like some tourist attraction like caesars or whatever. vegas is full of things with just visages, stolen identities, CBGBs is one of the most recognisable, genuine venues ever, it spawned many great bands from grassroots level, and i don't think the attitude should change. besides, vegas is a horrible, polluted, big business, hot place, not something for the small clubs.
well at least
busted were there when they went across to america, i'm so proud!
yum!
oh man it smells good in that place, 40 years of beer, sweat, fags and puke. niiiice
cbgb
i've been last year, total cash cow, $7bucks a rolling rock. Local jersey band playing, the girl bassist looked like mike skinner/ian curtis, which was cool, her band sounded like nickelback, which wasnt. It's a location, glad i've been, but really, nothing special. The Grapes in Shef or San Diego casbah slay it. Fraction of the history, but actually run as gig venues.
Its definitely for the tourists, will fit well in vegas. its already turned into a visage with a stolen identity.
incidentally, that area of NYC is quality for a midweek drink, the dive down the street (wish i could remember its name) had $2 beers and looked like i'd imagine cbgb would.
cbgb
i went at the start of this yr and its a fuckin great venue.... not been to a toilet venue with an atmosphere like it, i was in new york for a week and went 2 separate gigs of bands id never heard of... and they were both rammed. its not that expensive, around the same as any other venue in NYC, think i was payin $5 for a corona. where i went to watch claps your hands and say yeah at irving plaza and it was 7.50. anyway will be a massive loss to music history i say, but suppose thats why they call it music history?
