End of an era: The Boat Race in Cambridge

News in today that the Boat Race is being bought out by Enterprise Inns and there will be no more live music there.

This is a great loss to the Cambridge music scene, as it both gave me and others the opportunity to see up and coming bands (Datsuns (before they were big), Snow Patrol, Wolf Colonel, Oceansize, etc.) and gave local talent (CRS, akira, etc.) a chance to be heard. There isn't anything else in Cambridge with a similar profile - the Corn Exchange and the Junction are a lot bigger (and so less intimate) and the Portland Arms is a lot smaller and won't attract the same quality of touring bands.

Thanks must go to Simon for all the great nights he's put on there.

The place will be sadly missed.

Another fine venue bites the dust...

A thought: lots of footie clubs have and are facing the bullet and there are various supporters schemes. Could there ever be anything like this for an indie venue, the underground clubs togethers and saves some of these places through financial means?

its much harder to save a music venue, football club supporters can easily do fundrasing and there is also like thousands of them, the only hope in the past for music venues nearing there death is some1 with the capital to keep it doing

but if it has been bought out then im afraid its done and dusted

It seems like the new venue at APU is putting on similar bands as the boat race used to. <a href = "http://www.wegottickets.com/search.asp?artist=&month=0&location=143&start=0&x=15&y=10">See here</a>.

Unfortunately they don't seem to be as frequent, and I haven't yet made it to APU so don't know what the place is like.

Also being a Cambridge Uni student I don't know how welcome I'd be!

you would indeed be unwelcome. we would point and laugh at your foppish ways and haughty accent.
