The Wildhearts are well-known for writing B-sides that normally outshine the A-side, and in the case of their latest offering this is a bloody good job, because 'So Into You' is not an altogether brilliant track. What's good about it is that it has a hugely infectious verse, it gives Ginger and CJ a chance to show off what is essentially a vocal combination made in heaven, and it gives the entire band the opportunity to rock like bastards in the chorus. What might disappoint some is the lack of direction to the song - whereas their best songs give you the sense of being taken on a journey, where rhythmic twists and turns constantly surprise, in its most recent offerings the band have been relying increasingly on their ability to write a good tune.

But those B-sides... A straightahead rock & roll number like 'Dancin'' could be accused of being throwaway if the vocals weren't just brimming with passion, and from then on things just get better. Working under the guise of trademark Wildhearts songs (mega riffs, staccato verses and HUGE choruses), these tracks pull the rug from under you, launching into a hyperactive guitar solo or else sliding into a heart-melting middle section that leaves you trying to remember when a song last touched you >there<.

There's nothing quite as eclectic here as on earlier offerings, and ultimately the emphasis is on big, big tunes of many varieties. But I challenge anyone to listen to 'Lake of Piss' and come away without the song buzzing around in their head. Even if 'So Into You' disappoints, there's plenty of material here to keep you going until the band's next album, The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed, is unleashed after the summer.

The Wildhearts - So Into You

Not their greatest single, but the B-sides are ace (and that's why we buy Wildhearts singles, after all the A-sides end up on albums).

Anyone reading this before 17 May... get down the shop. Buy it now. You need it. And we need them in the charts too.

Cheers,
Damian.

PS. Feel free to buy it after that date too, but before would be preferable!

Re: The Wildhearts - So Into You

Actually the a-side's really growing on me - I'd been listening to it for about two or three weeks and it did nothing for me then today, I put it on and turned it up nice and loud and suddenly I was enjoying it. It's weird the way songs do that to you. I think that possibly, despite releasing some arguably more simplistic records recently, the Wildhearts' song-writing skill is actually improving - they're no longer relying on complete changes in style and rhythm mid-song. The songs as a whole have more coherence - by relying more on tunes, they're actually showing that the tunes alone do have some substance. If that makes sense.

I agree that it'd be great if people could buy the single before Sunday so as to get it into the charts, but the main point is just that it's a really bloody good collection of songs - it's essentially an EP's worth of album-worthy material.

Re: The Wildhearts - So Into You

I think we should all send Radio 1 a Jiffy bag of dog shit each as Ginger asked so nicely.

Re: The Wildhearts - So Into You

Were you at the London show, Dale? What did you think? Of the two dates I saw on this tour it was the better one - brilliant atmosphere as well, and I enjoyed Amen. Surprising that they didn't actually play the new single considering that that's what they're touring to promote. They did play it in Oxford, so I was surprised they didn't play it in London.

As for a jiffy bag of dog shit - if only that would work...

Re: The Wildhearts - So Into You

I thought yr initial review was spot on... I came online today with the sole purpose of trying to find someone who agreed with me over this! I love the Wildhearts, but I just feel the new single is not as strong as the others have been, and I was (to be honest) a little disappointed with it.
The b-sides however are awesome, and i strongly encourage everyone to go out and buy the single simply for "Lake of Piss"... Excellent piece of work.
Take care
Ross

Re: The Wildhearts - So Into You

Yeah, I think that I'm getting used to 'So Into You' because everything gets a bit better with time, but it's just not as inventive as many of their songs.

The B-sides are just getting better and better though - 'The People That Life Forgot' has got some excellent moments too.

Re: The Wildhearts - So Into You

I still love the title track. Only took a couple of plays for me to get into it! Anyways... the good news is that MTV2 has finally given in and will start playing it from this weekend. Hopefully future releases will also be getting played too.

Cheers,
Damian.
