Silver Sun's frontman James Broad has announced more details about the band's forthcoming third album.

Further to our earlier report, DiS can reveal that the recording of Silver Sun's long-awaited third album is now complete. Contrary to earlier indications, singer and guitarist James Broad has recorded most of the parts himself, with just a little bit of help from others in places. On the decision to record without the full band, Broad comments that "I would like to have the others contribute to it more but they are busy doing other stuff - when it comes to playing live I will have to try to round them all up I suppose."

The first single from the album will probably be 'Bubblegum', and will be the first Silver Sun record to be released since 1998's 'Neo Wave', which was met with a mixed response from fans and critics alike. Broad sees the new album as an improvement on the band's second album, explaining that "It's got more synths & other stuff on it than before and it's not as flat sounding as Neowave (which I think kind of sounds removed from your head when you listen to it - the new one will feel like it is immediately in your pituitary gland and is about to burst your spleen)."

Artwork has been provided by Jeff Cummins, who designed the much-celebrated cover art for the band's self-titled debut, and although label details are yet to be confirmed, it seems likely that it'll be released through the band's own label at first, then through someone else when things start to kick off. As the band's lineup is not 100% secure, there is no indication of any imminent live appearances.

Songs that have been recorded for the album (although they may not all appear on the final record) are:

Bubblegum
She's with the band
She wants a puppy, she'll have a puppy
Found You In a Dream
Immediate
Lie Back and Think Of England
Can't Get You Out Of My Head
Jody
Pipsqueak
You Can't Kill Rock N Roll
Poppin
Garlic
Lies

While those titles suggest that a classic bit of Silver Sun bubblegum pop could be in the offing, Broad has offered some further hints on what the album will sound like: "In terms of sound I would say that it's fuzzy like the first one, varied like the second and generally is fucking excellent." Let's hope so.

I thought they'd split up! and is that a kylie cover i see in the tracklisting?

Re: Silver Sun say "You Can't Kill Rock'n'Roll"

They never split up, but were dropped by Polydor and that slowed things down for a good while, so they all got on with other things. I get the impression they have been sitting on a lot of material, lacking the right opportunity to actually release it. Not 100% sure if it will be the original lineup, but I think that was the initial intention.

Re: Silver Sun say "You Can't Kill Rock'n'Roll"

Goddammit Mr Ben! I am getting sick and tired of your mastabatory Silver Sun 'news' stories. The band were/are a bunch of unimaginative-retro-Styx-wannabies. The reason they disappeared was cause no-one liked them - despite having a major label promoting the f*ck out of them. They should just cut their losses and leave us alone.

The people have spoken.

And for once in its life the music industry appears to have got it right.

Re: Silver Sun say "You Can't Kill Rock'n'Roll"

Hmmm... Well the second album was a pile of shite, admittedly. The Can't Get You Out Of My Head track could be an ELO cover! That would fit. Alternatively, it may just be an unoriginal song title, which is entirely plausible judging by some of the lyrics on Broad & Co's second effort. I thought they were history, but I'll happily listen to new material with an open mind!

Re: Silver Sun say "You Can't Kill Rock'n'Roll"

Marcus, I do apologise for subjecting you to my masturbatory antics. I try to keep them private but every now and then something just slips out into the public domain.

If it's any consolation, I wasn't actually masturbating whilst writing the piece (it would've slowed down my typing, probably) and didn't receive any sexual pleasure from it whatsoever.

Re: Silver Sun say "You Can't Kill Rock'n'Roll"

WOO WOOOOOO! Here come the Indie Police!

OK - look, there's nowt wrong with not liking a band. There's nowt wrong with telling us you don't like a band. But writing as though to say that your opinion is definitive and suggesting that others don't have the right to talk about acts you don't like is borderline arrogance or worse.

An argument that takes a premise and applies it selectively is a failed argument. If a band you like failed to achieve the success you wanted after heavy promotion, you wouldn't be using this as a reason for them to stop would you?

"The people have spoken". Yeah, right.

Re: Silver Sun say "You Can't Kill Rock'n'Roll"

Well put. Why do people here frequently state opinion as fact? I don't personally like a lot of bands featured on dis, but I'm aware that as a music resource it's trying to cover as wide a range as possible. I just don't read the bits I'm not interested in.

The Silver Sun news piece was intended as INFORMATION for people that wanted it. If you hate Silver Sun that much, the headline of the article should've warned you off.

As for opinions on 'Neo Wave', I'm constantly surprised that a lot of fans don't like it as much as the debut. I thought SS wrote the perfect debut and the perfect followup - I wouldn't have wanted a carbon copy of the first album, and the new-found diversity was refreshing.

Re: Silver Sun say "You Can't Kill Rock'n'Roll"

I like Silver Sun, and I'd play the second over the first!
if you like, you can read my interview with James Broad at www.pennyblackmusic.com, go to magazine then my name.

Re: Silver Sun say "You Can't Kill Rock'n'Roll"

I enjoyed that interview, thanks. Pleased to see someone else who prefers the second album. I love the debut, but the second is more varied. Also like JB I normally skip 'Too Much, Too Little, Too Late' when I'm playing the album.

Re: Silver Sun say "You Can't Kill Rock'n'Roll"

Nothing wrong with 'Too Much Too Little Too Late'! It's pop music. Which is not an insult. I suspect James Broad is just narked that a cover version was his biggest hit to date, which is understandable. At least it got them on Top of the Pops!

Cheers,
Damian.

Re: Silver Sun say "You Can't Kill Rock'n'Roll"

It's a brilliant song, but I played it to death when I bought it, then heard it played to death on the radio that summer. By the time the album came out (at the end of the summer, I think) I'd heard enough of it!

That's the one nice thing about radio stations refusing to playlist my favourite bands I suppose....

Re: Silver Sun say "You Can't Kill Rock'n'Roll"

I still can't help but wonder if there is a tinge of envy knowing that Wheatus ripped off what they were doing just a few years later and got to the level they have.

Just a thought.

Re: Silver Sun say "You Can't Kill Rock'n'Roll"

I've often thought that the trendification of rock music over the last few years might have been a major motivating factor in all the recent reformations that have taken place. So many bands that were producing brilliant rock music in the 90s must be thinking "shit, should have carried on doing it". And a lot of them have decided to come back and show the others how it should be done. Which is a good thing, rather than a bandwagon thing, in my opinion.

Re: Silver Sun say "You Can't Kill Rock'n'Roll"

Yeah, I e-mailed James ages ago and apparently no-one seemed interested in the pile of songs that was the third album + . I think the band are still in communication if not together and any more material should be encouraged.
