Turin Brakes have an unfortunate image; beloved by the middle tier of society, they can sometimes come across as accountants gone hippy for the weekend. Where songs like ‘Average Man’ should be gracelessly plucked out of the ether, too often it seems that they have been sweated over in a white-hot forge of indie-pop pleasantness. Artisans succeeding over artists.

This doesn’t of course mean that the works of Olly and Gale can’t be enjoyed, it just means that indie snobs like myself can review them with a faintly dissatisfied sneer of ‘it’ll do’, rather than invest a bit of soul into it. But why should I be any different from them?

‘Average Man’ simpers along brightly with some elementary pedal steel and erm, superbly strummed acoustic guitars. A featherlite chorus filters in as we are implored to smoke another cigarette, ‘because you’re an average man’. Well, you’re an average band. What are you gonna do about it?

Hehe... love the review! I think this song is pretty representative of the first half of their album which is all too dull and disapppointing apart from Long Distance, they do save it at the end a little though once they try something a bit different..
