Favourite lyric(s) ever?

Anyone for some cerebral discourse?

No?

Well tough shit! I'm gonna ask y'all anyway:

What's your favourite song lyric (s) of all time?

The immeadite one that springs to mind for me is:

"It's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate, it takes strength to be gentle and kind"

By an effeminate chap called Steven Patrick Morrissey who, so legend has it, used to be in an indie band in the 80s...

any other thoughts/favourites?

Re: Favourite lyric(s) ever?

By the way, I have as it happens just discovered that this very same discussion happenned a few months back. Sincere apologies for being highly unoriginal. "I'm only human" as the Human League and Craig David once sang.

Re: Favourite lyric(s) ever?

Yeah but fuck it lets have it again for all those like me who missed it the first time around.

it has to be "Lost my shape, I feel like an accident" Talking Heads - Crosseyed and Painless

pure quality, could mean anything and thats why I like it. To me it has a very deffinate meaning plus the song will tear your faith off at 100 yards.

Re: Favourite lyric(s) ever?

My dad says don't take chances, don't do drugs and don't trust fat kids.
(Engerica)

Your breath stinks, so kiss me. I trust you completely...
(Engerica)

I am bleeding blood i'd give to you, to be the way we were.

In the shadows of her eyes you look like God

Re: Favourite lyric(s) ever?

"I'd show a smile but i'm too weak, i'd share with you could i only speak, just how much this hurts me" - Top emoness from AFI

"Maybe in another life i could find you there" - always gets me - Offspring - Gone Away... Offspring lyrics are so underrated by the way...

Re: Favourite lyric(s) ever?

'Is something missing in my touch?
A tension tugging at my smile?
If there's a right thing to say,
I'm sure I missed it by a mile.
Swallowed in some detail,
heavy in my blood,
I wanna hold you close,
but I can't lift my arms up.

Is there a reason for this distance?
More than the drug that floats my day?
A nervous bug in my system,
It keeps me edgy and ashamed.

I got a saint who never ever will forgive,
Who never understood me but still tells me how to live,
It fits when I stretch,
and I stretch because I can.

I strech until I'm sore,
and then I open up four more,
I do it out of habit, not addiction.
And if I give it up,
Clean out my blood,
Will I still feel bored and disconnected?

If I do it all for love,
Will I ever get enough,
Cos you can never be too pure or too connected.
You can never be too pure, or too connected.
You can never be too pure...'

Too Pure, Sebadoh

A sweet, sweet lyric. Right up there with
'I see a darkness' by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy.

Re: Favourite lyric(s) ever?

These lyrics mean an awful lot to me.

‘‘So now I'm going back again
I got to get her somehow
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter's wives
Don't know how it all got started
I don't what they do with their lives
But me I'm still on the road
Heading for another joint
We always did feel the same
We just saw it from a different point of view
Tangled up in Blue.’’

- Dylan, ‘Tangled Up In Blue’.

‘‘They walked alone by the old canal
A little confused I remember well
And stopped into a strange hotel with a neon burning bright
He felt the heat of the night, it hit him like a freight train
Moving with a simple twist of fate.
He woke up the room was bare
He didn't see her anywhere
He told himself he didn't care, pushed the window open wide
Felt an emptiness inside to which he just could not relate
Brought on by a simple twist of fate.
People tell me it's a sin
To know and feel too much within
I still believe she was my twin but I lost the ring
She was born in spring but I was born too late
Blame it on a simple twist of fate.’’

- Dylan, ‘Simple Twist Of Fate’.

‘‘If you see her say hello she might be in Tangier
She left here last early spring is living there I hear
Say for me that I'm all right though things get kind of slow
She might think that I've forgotten her don't tell her it isn't so.

We had a falling-out like lovers often will
And to think of how she left that night it still brings me a chill
And though our separation it pierced me to the heart
She still lives inside of me we've never been apart.

If you get close to her kiss her once for me
I always have respected her for doing what she did and getting free
Oh whatever makes her happy I won't stay in the way
Though the bitter taste still lingers on from the night I tried to make her stay

I see a lot of people as I make the rounds
And I hear her name here and there as I go from town to town
And I've never gotten used to it I've just learned to turn it off
Either I'm too sensitive or else I'm getting soft.

Sundown yellow moon I replay the past
I know every scene by heart they all went by so fast
If she's passing back this way I'm not that hard to find
Tell her she can look me up if she's got the time.’’

- Dylan, ‘‘If You See Her Say Hello.’’

"Regular rent sets you back
if you don't own your property,
if your place towers with grey and cold,
suspended like a cemetery.
i bite the hand that feeds me,
i punch the gifthorse in the mouth,
easy come will set you free,
easy go will let you down.
you cannot hear the things you're taught,
you cannot read the stuff you want,
depression's easy to catch before you can see where you're going.
this old life's a lottery
fingers entice you in to bare shelves of debauchery
the afterlife is here on earth
but you've gotta do the pre-life first...
you must work to achieve,
you must have riches so you can burn them,
all the dreams are already bought,
so you have to earn them...
and i'll never have this place paid off 'til the new contractors tear it down,
and i'll never pay the council off 'til the debt collectors change the locks.
and the things you're not allowed to do will rise like snakes and beckon you,
to satisfy your one desire and frustrated, sated, drive you higher.
i bite the hand that feeds me,
i punch the gift horse in the mouth
easy come will set you free
easy go will let you down,"

Forgive me for being an oldish fart, but how's about:

"If there was truth in wishing wells, I'd use all my coins" - it was by Cecil, and I think the track was 'Spirit Level'.

Then again, they also had "I've been unwillingly screwing rabits, I need to stop my dirty habits", so there you go. Yeah, they were alright Cecil :)

Fear we may come,
So run run run run run run run'

Yard of Blonde Girls, Jeff Buckley

Re: Favourite lyric(s) ever?

'Yard of Blonde Girls' isn't by Jeff Buckley, it's by 'the Nymphs' an American all-girl group from the early 90s, still a corking cover version though!

Re: Favourite lyric(s) ever?

We're knights of the round table!
We dance whene'er we're able!
We do routines,
And border scenes,
With footwork imp-ecc-able!
We dine well here in Camelot,
We eat ham and jam and spam a lot!

We're knights of the round table!
Our shows are for-midable!
Though many times,
We're given rhymes,
That are quite un-sing-able!
We're opera mad in Camelot,
We sing from the Diaphragm a lot!

Though we're tough and able,
Quite in-def-at-ig-able,
Between our quests,
We sequin vests,
And impersonate Clark Gable,
It's a busy life in Camelot,
I have to push the pram a lot

Re: Favourite lyric(s) ever?

I knew Inger Lorre had a co write on it and a version showed up on her first solo album with Jeff singing on it, but I never saw it on a Nymphs record.

Also I distinctly remember the Nymphs having a couple of male musicians. I only remember because the guitarist's name was 'Jet Freedom'.

One letter and now you're a part of it,
Now you've done it

One thing that you've always wanted to.
Now you've done it,

Superb!

------

There's a voice that keeps on calling me,
Down the road, that's where I'll always be,
Every stop I take, I make a new friend,
Can't stay for long, just turn around and I'm gone again

Maybe tomorrow I'll wanna settle down,
Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on,
Until tomorrow, the whole world is my home

And if you want to join me for a while,
Just pack your bag, we'll travel light, that's hobo style

Maybe tomorrow, I'll wanna settle down,
Until tomorrow I'll just keep moving on,
Until tomorrow, the whole world is my home.
