Like some perversely enjoyable fungal infection, The Darkness are indeed ‘Growing On Me’. If you’ve seen the video, singer Justin is to be seen playing lord of the manor somewhere in the stockbroker belt and wiggling his boney arse aplenty in the most tasteless one piece pink chest-less leotard since… well, hang on… can that ever be considered a refined bit of clothes-horsery? Quite probably not.

So what to think? Are The Darkness playing it purely for laughs, cribbing off a copy of ‘Bad News’ or is ‘Spinal Tap’ super-glued into the video recorder? They seem to have stolen the very sassy pop sensibilities of Ric Ocasek, they seem totally unembarrassed by the most preposterously lips-locked-on-gurn masturbatory guitar soloing and they have just an absolutely cracking tune. You should probably enjoy drinking cheap cider in graveyards and not wash very often to enjoy this thing, so sorry. Turn it up!

Y'see, when I first heard this, I thought it wasn't as good as the last few singles, but it is indeed doing what it says on the tin, in a ronseal-esque fashion.

And fuck all your snobbish beaver bashing, The Darkness rock and they're here to take over the world. Even the sodding NME have to start bigging them up now. (major labels + sales + radioplay = the biggest attempted about-turn since the titanic saw a chunk of ice)

      They're a fucking joke.

But I'm sure they'll do good trade in Scandinavia.
      • Re: The Darkness - Growing On Me

i'm disappointed by them. the theatrics etc are funny but they have very few genuinely catchy, awesome tunes in their arsenal, and with the live show, the novelty wears off after the first time you see them.

however if they release 'laaaa-aaaa-aaaarrhhhve on the rocks' i will rejoice, for it is a godlike creation.

I suspect that they're saving that one for just before the album...
          • Re: The Darkness - Growing On Me

i would then like a re-release of 'i believe in a thing called love', please.

I think The Darkness kick ass. I did not know of them till I heard 'Growing on me' and i have realised that they are awesome. I'm listening to other stuff by them that I can find.

The album's not bad, but it does wear thinly into yawndome after the fifth track.

If u listen, the song is actually about genital warts
