Artists: DJ Shadow

DJ Shadow reveals details of his new direction and the first fruits are borne.

Remember the first time you heard Entroducing..., DJ Shadow's first commercially-available LP? From the dark, introspective rhythms to the perfectly looped samples from all over the globe, it was a true classic and herald of a new genre. Well, much like his good friends Seafood, he's BACK.

The follow-up to 2002's The Private Press is said (from the big horse's mouth) to be "stylistically... very different from The Private Press. Some have said Press was an inward-looking album. If that's true, than (sic) this album is the opposite, and that suits me just fine. I've also stopped worrying if my changing taste in music costs me fans. You can't please everybody all the time, but you can please yourself."

A video for new track '3 Freaks' has been posted on his website djshadow.com. Maybe you should go and watch it?

He's also playing live at the O2 Wireless festival in June - London (Hyde Park) on the 23rd and Leeds' Harewood House on the 24th.

DiScuss: Is Shadow still relevant? Did Dr. Octagon's 'Dr. Octogonecologist' LP render every other attempt at the genre completely pointless? Will you be going to see him play? Have you seen the muffin man?

I know I say it every time but...

Since I Left You by The Avalanches > Endtroducing

I know where he is.

The Muffin Man is seated at the table in the laboratory of the Utility Muffin
Research Kitchen...

i lost Endtroducing. TWICE.

how annoying is THAT?!

Remnants!

!

although i like Endtroducing a lot

i agree with Filip here.

Plus i think i prefer Private Press *ducks*

If his new stuff

is anything like the track he did for the cage album, then there is hope.

Endtroducing is still one of my favourite albums ever, i keep forgetting how good it is. and it's totally > since I left you.

No it's not

you're wrong, wrong, wrong. It is amazing though.

I wonder if we could get the two records to fight somehow to see which is the true champion.

Entroducing would win

It's a seriously fucking incredible record.

!

Indeed. I'm going to put it on NOW!

There is no competition.

Endtroducing is by far the better, and more innovative album.

its all about

organ donor

Private Press...

was wank though. So I've lost faith.

Avid...

And he looks too much like Avid Merrion. Can't take him seriously.

huh?

"Did Dr. Octagon's 'Dr. Octogonecologist' LP render every other attempt at the genre completely pointless?"

I signed up just now with the sole purpose of verbally slapping whoever write that.

of course it didnt....there have been many superior "attempts" since that album

have there?

which ones would those be then?

these....

Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain
Quasimoto - The Unseen
Company Flow - Funcrusher plus
El-P - Fantastic Damage
ShadowHunters - Corrupt Data
Airborn Audio - Good Fortune
Anti pop consortium - Arrhythmia

the list could go on. Dan The Automators production on Octagon is fairly tame these days...great at the time though

You make some good points

But Doc Ock is right up there with the best of them.

yeah.....

it was the high water mark at the time, but there have been a lot of equally good or better things in the years since. it was a daft discussion point.

mind you, i say that, and here i am discussing it....

Watched the video.

Didn't like it, it reminded me of missy elliot.

I'm sorry

and I'll stop here as it's me against everyone but I still think Since I Left You is a much better sample-based record. It flows much better, is a million times more fun, the samples come from much more varied sources and there are more of them and the way they're mixed is perfect. Endtroducing is brilliant but most of the tracks are heavily based around one sample and that's usually just played through with a few beats and scratches over the top. It sounds good but in terms of the work put into it I think it's nothing compared to Since I Left You.

I know it's uncool to say so but the Avalanches record is just one of the best things I've ever heard and I just don't get the same feeling from Endtroducing no matter how many times I listen to it. It's probably just not fun enough for me. Anyway, rant over, they're both amazing.

The Avalanches record

Great as it is does tend to noodle about at times.

And Endtroducing has Mutual Slump, so that wins.

Filip - have you ever seen James De La Cruz DJ? He's unbelievably good.

I agree with you about the Avalanches,

but not about Endtroducing. I found it dull.

I too have seen the video...

and didnt like it. Fair play to him for admitting he might lose a few fans cause he knows he gonna. Everyone that loved him for his individuality and uniqueness will not like that tune as it could of been produced by any number of hip hop producers and to be honest is pretty non-descript. dissapointing.

that new video

WTF!?!?!?!!?!?

agreed it is boring

but if he likes boring now then he can't help that.
