i dunt understand
theyre giving away their whole back catalogue, but 6 tracks a month?
I thought people had got over the whole, "music must be free for it to be art" bollocks. They have an online shop selling CDs so they can hardly preach.
And it's definitely not the entire back catalogue; nice offer but a little misguided.
:(
Im a sad sad panda.
COI response
Hi all,
we've never said we don't want to make money, without money our label wouldn't exsist, without money our bands couldn't tour and records couldn't be made. Money ISN'T the issue here, that's part of the point we're trying to make. Our download stance is more about the control of music/art by massive cororations who wish to gaurd their massive profit margins by limiting the way music is spread. The same companies who supply the mp3 players will sell you a CD disc with encryptions on there that will potentially break your PC possibly also supplied by the same corporation. They want to sell you mp3's that expire as well. We don't think that art needs to come from poverty, indeed the history of art is more overflowing with wealthy creators than otherwise...because friends education used to be the privelage of the wealthy. We just believe that art belongs to a wider community. Before the internet and mp3's , we old types used to tape LP's for our friends. "Man, you must listen to this, I bought it at the weekend" that's how we got into the stuff we're still buying today. Every one at Captains Of Industry are prolific music buyers "BUYERS" we download less that anyone I know, but we defend your right to download digital information without fear of prosecution. What the majors don't want is to not be in control of what is happening with music. If a band swells up from the digital underground without their contract hung heavy around the neck, they make no cut, they make no margin and they lose their control of the situation. We want a music scene where anything can happen for anyone, it's creative that way, that's where our heroes come from...many of those heroes went on to make millions, they're still our heroes...money has got fuck all to do with it. We want you to buy our music..straight fact, but we're also saying if you don't want to...well hell we'd rather you listened to it, gave it a shot, you might find something you love...in 10 years time you might still be loving it and it might enrich your life. You may even go to a gig, or buy a tshirt and at some point the whole community prospers. We do it because we believe, it's not a gimmik, it's not a fad, we may never make a penny but we feel it's the right thing. As for the six a month thing...well, you can listen to our radio anytime, every release page has every track(cept the stuff we don't own)available for download BUT our download CD's are full CD quality, our bandwidth simply wont allow us to give you 6 hours of back to back music at CD quality, it would cripple our website so no one could get anything. You can listen to everything we ever done on our site though. Hope that answers some questions. We're not cynics, we are dreamers...we like it that way.
very good response !
Hurrah for Captains of Industry !
No I agree that's a very well made point. It was mainly the Blake comment that got me as it seemed to contradict you. Maybe I took it too literally.
I think CoI are a very good, forward thinking label and I wish them every bit of luck.
oh sweet
was confused by the original post mentioning the backcatalogue and linking to that page. giving away low quality mp3s of everything is great.
the confusion i guess was over the william blake quote. is your comment on it sarcastic?
Blake
No not sarcastic, it's a philosophical point of view. What Blake is asserting is that money oft times controls ones creativity and that creativity put under the prism of control cannot flourish. I.E. You write down your beliefs about the state, what you think of Tony Blair. Before I can read your true voice the state intervenes and censors your thoughts. Money can mean ownership of your opinion. In Blakes mind money meant dominion. We fight that with every fiber of our being. Making money on the other hand can be the fruits of free creativity..as in "wow I never heard anything like that before, I must buy it." There's no contradiction.
Does that make sense?
Invite
I think the whole download issue at COI may need to be made clearer to people, it's easy to see peoples confusion, that's our responsiblity to put right.
We'd like to invite you all over to www.captainsof.com for more open conversation at our forum. Whether you want to question our motives or start your own debate, we welcome all comment. Drowned In Sound is a masterful space for real music discussion, if we could be half of what they are it'd make us proud indeed.
