The Blueskins consist of hormone-fuelled guitars infused with ferocious drums proving they won’t roll over too easily: they will put up a fight if necessary. But it’s a fight that would probably involve nothing more than bitch-slaps because, y’see, The Blueskins are a band your mum would probably invite round for tea. The thing with the band is that they look young. Really young. Guitarist Richie Townsend looks about 14, whereas bassist Maff Smith looks 12 and you can’t help but wonder if their parents are aware that they’re breaking curfew.
The shy boys who stepped onto the stage mere minutes ago have transformed themselves. Opener ‘Girl’ has just finished and the band are about to rattle their way through ‘Give Me Your Hand’. It’s time to welcome the professionals who are here to be taken seriously. ‘Give Me…’ has the raw guitars and killer drums we thought we’d never hear. It’s totally unexpected but is what we secretly wanted. ‘Blue Sneakers’ follows later and is the highlight of the night with the band leaving us with a wettened appetite and leaves us wondering as to how long they can remain the world's best-kept secret.
