Pretty Girls Make Graves

The sun has got its hat on, hip-hip-hip hooray… for a while, at least. DiS is strolling along Oxford Street, two hours prior to our entering The 100 Club, when the heavens open and chunks of hail descend, en masse. We take shelter amongst the Virgin Megastore sale racks, combing ice from tangled hair with uncomfortably chilled fingers, when our eyes are suddenly distracted from copies of Turn On The Bright Lights retailing for a fiver. Pretty Girls Make Graves’ latest long-player, their third, sits among the new releases. No accompanying preview text, no pre-paid rack-out placement. No fuss, no bother, not a great deal of obvious interest. Good thing, then, that the quintet is in town to shoulder the plugging burden.

“We’ve a new record out, here, in the UK,” announces singer Andrea Zollo twice, at least. “It’s not out in the States yet, so it’s good to see it. Do we have copies? Okay, we have copies…” There’s a faint suggestion of surprise in her voice as she’s given the confirmation; there’s no shortage of surprise among the crowd, too, that the Seattle-ites don’t take this opportunity – one of only two UK dates – to promote their new wares in a more obvious fashion. Sure, new songs are delivered, each introduced as the professional musician should when facing the potentially unmoved, but the smattering is slight and far from representative of an album brimming with creativity and flair.

‘Parade’, which seems poorly positioned on said third album, Élan Vital, enjoys fresh wind in its sails this evening, Zollo absolutely bouncing to its jaunty rhythms; ‘Pictures Of A Night Scene’, too, is delivered with an electric urgency that strips the on-album version’s many layers back to a basic beat and brief saxophone blast from Jay Clark. It’s the one time that the band’s guitarist isn’t amusingly bobbing his head and shoulders along to the often complex arrangements he’s emitting; so far as visual spectacles go, DiS could watch his focused performance ‘til the Tube stops running.

Such renderings are few and far between, though, with material from The New Romance, album number two, enjoying the lion’s share of the set list. From the title track to the cacophonous climax of ‘All Medicated Geniuses’, the older songs are rabidly received by the front row, who respond to every handclap and sideways wink with unmatched enthusiasm; but the band’s apparent resistance to give their latest songs the airtime they deserve is mystifying. The inclusion of ‘The Getaway’ also seems odd: why fall back upon the tried-and-tested when so much new material needs to stretch its live legs, sooner rather than later? A solid display of the new over the old would have rendered the few poor reviews that have come Élan Vital’s way irrelevant; without the songs’ authors showing absolute faith, though, one comes away wondering if the doubters didn’t have a point.

Accomplished musicians they are, and a slick performance they easily deliver, but Pretty Girls Make Graves depart the stage having missed a trick: these old songs are great, a couple are fantastic, but most attendees tonight leave with little idea of what to expect from Élan Vital. With luck they’ll overlook the frosty receptions, as they should. Luck, though, rarely holds, as today’s odd weather only attests to.

  • Arrrrrrrgh

There seems to be so much PGMG bashing going on at the moment! I just read a review in Q (OK, so it's Q, but still) which gave Elan Vital 1 out of 5. ONE OUT OF FUCKING FIVE! And they slated Seliing The Wind as being the worst track - it's near perfect!

As for the gig, yes there was so much New Romance stuff but I thought it was pretty evenly balanced in fairness. They could have easily delivered Speakers at the end but chose not to.

Plus; the 'front row' knew pretty much every EV track word for word.

    Still, fair points Mr Diver.

    • I do really wanna see the Q review.

The album's really good. REALLY good. But, I'll 'fess, I didn't think so on the first listen. It's a perfect grower. Now, dozens of listens in, I'm totally hooked, and can't see me putting it down anytime soon.

    • i heard they suck live...

... well no quite the opposite. thought that the gig was one of the best that i have seen them perform...

the new tracks translate extremely well when played live...

      go pretty girls go

      {ps here are some pics from the gig http://www.flickr.com/photos/mic_n_2_sugars/sets/72057594099084739/ }

      • shes stiil

        a chubster then ;)

        • harsh

          • but true

            • 6?

              Really Mike? Really? Oh well.....

There does seem to be a lot of PGMG bashing and to be honest it's from people who essentially want "The New Romance Part Fucking 2." They can't seem to comprehend that the band lost a guitarist and brought in a multi-instrument goddess! Of course there's going to be change when a founding member of a band is replaced, especially when this one plays the accordian.

I'm glad they didn't just bash out another "angular geetar" album because, they've already done 2 albums of that and an ep. They've been doing angular geetar albums way before Kele from Bloc Party even starting contemplating ripping them off.

Regarding the live show, I thought it was the best time I've seen them, mainly because the other two times sucked, but more importantly they more than delievered. I'm glad they played older stuff, it has been a year since they've come over, I thought it was a nice balance of old and new, because let's face it, new stuff that people don't know that well=boring. Maybe next time, eh?

My score? For what it's worth....8/10

              • considering

that was the first time I have seen PGMG, and I have only heard a few tracks off of the new album, I really enjoyed the gig and thought it was brilliant. I thought the atmosphere was excellent, everyone singing along having a great time and they played most of the tracks off of the new romance which I love. A top gig. I would of tried to find other DiSers, but I didn't know what any of you looked like!

              • we got 'speakers' up here!

but no 'all medicated geniuses'. 'pictures of a night scene' was AMAZING live, really frantic and a mile better than the subdued version on the album.

is clearly a wordsmith! That's exactly what I though of the gig, and to be honest, I'd have given it 9/10, if not a perfect 10. Best I've ever seen them.

                • maybe

                  but she's fucking stunning!

                  • I agree

just about the best I have seen them live.9 at least.

                  • Why is there a picture of the Komakino singer?

                    ?

for me this was easily an 8-9 out of ten gig. difficult for the band to play a whole set of elan vital songs when the album had only been out for a day. I'm sure DiS had the album courtesy of matador far in advance, but the band had to mix it up fairly - with 4 tracks from 'good health' i was more than happy, although 'sad girls' would have been the crowning moment for me, had it happened.

i've seen them 4 times now, and they have undergone a gradual, but significant evolution both onstage and on-record...i'm sure they will be showcasing more of elan vital in the summer tour, and as many of those songs are a couple of years old, perhaps we will even get some more material.

a final note of mention for the beautiful miss marrs.... wow.

                  • no she isnt

and shes a shit singer too.

                • a big bad shame

This band used to be lethal.

                  Now they are shit.

                  The new album is shit.

They were shit when I last saw them.

                  A Shame.
