One-time Wonder Stuff drummer Martin Gilks died yesterday following a motorcycle accident on Sunday (April 2nd).
The musician died from internal injuries. He was just 41. Originally part of The Mighty Lemon Drops, Gilks hooked up with The Wonder Stuff until their split in 1994. He later managed a number of bands through his own company, Furtive, including Reef and Hundred Reasons.
A spokesperson for the management company said: "He was greatly loved by many and will be sorely missed by all his family and friends."
Dreadful news. I spent my formative years listening to the Wonderstuff amongst others, they helped me develop a passion for music. I felt terrible years ago when Rob Jones died, and I feel terrible now.
Thoughts are with his friends and family.
RIP Martin Gilks
i know Mrs Prole will be indifferently sad
as it ewas the first and she saw
PROLEFACT -the first band I saw was the Primitives, but secretly it was Erasure.
The last show at Phoenix 1994
was one of the best nights of my life. A great man and a fantastic drummer.
RIP Gilks
GIlks
Primitives were one of my very first gigs aswell.
RIP the Groove Controller.
Hundred Reasons
dedicated "silver" to him in Manchester. They were really giving it some that night.
RIP
Apparently...
...his motorbike was hit by a drunk driver on Putney Bridge. I can't corroborate that but it's what I've heard.
RIP. I've got to say, the perfunctory tribute on the Wonder Stuff site was appalling. I know they fell out but some things are more important...
Stuffies site
I hope it is just cos they are upset and will do a proper job soon.
Surely they can find it in their hearts to forget whatever went on.
top guy
he reped a couple of shows where i was tour manager. nicest rep i ever met!
the "tribute" on the stuffies site is indeed a complete joke.
Peace
First real band I ever saw live, Newcastle Riverside 1989. From then I got hooked on live music and The Stuffies were my first Indie band which then turned me onto a new chapter in my life. Thanks for the music.
