The Scaramanga Six: Are You One Of The Family?

When a press release talks of how a band forms to "recreate the feelings of desperation and terror of being in a car crash" you feel compelled at least to have a quick listen. If this is what a car crash is like then I guess abs and airbags do their job 'cos it's not a particularly harrowing experience. The lead track may start with what sounds like a broken fuzz pedal but it soon descends into fairly anthemic rock with clever keyboard bits. There are elements of Divine Comedy here, just with a little more grit (and a lower budget). The other tracks are similar, starting with clashing noises and unpleasant whines that descend into something fairly listenable. Chop off the first 5 seconds of each track and drop the car crash references and they could be onto something.

...what defines whether a record will be a "single" or a "demo"? i once had this question asked of me on my website and i couldnt answer it, but i wondered how dis make the distinction. cos i'd have said this record was a single. but that don't matter.

anyway, check out the new single from the scaramanga six which is called "you do, you die!" and is out on wrath records www.wrathrecords.co.uk and available soon from rough trade (london), picadilly records (manchester) and norman records (internet)

I usually work it out roughly by whether it's a track pre-luding a distributed album. Or whether the band are releasing something to get interest/fans/a deal. Also whether it is available in shops nationwide (ie does it have a distrobution deal, etc).

Plus, people who read demo reviews to find new bands are different to people who read single reviews to find out what bands they've heard/like are upto or thought about by dis.

Hope that makes some kind of tired sense.
