And why? What makes a great scene? Who are the best new bands in these scenes? Talk...

My vote goes to Leeds because they've got so many great new bands, including The Kaiser Chiefs who we've just signed and The Cribs who're ace.

In second place comes Sheffield, also because of some great bands there.

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

I dont know why you Wales, but I like the support even if Wales is not a city?!!

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

Raz you're just trying to get into my knickers aren't you?

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

Sheffield definitely, although being from there I would say that. Judan Suki, Harrissons and Arctic Monkeys are the best young bands in the area that I know of. What bands in Sheffield are you on about Sean? I'm pretty ITK about the local scene, but you may be aware of some bands that I'm not....

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene.

Sorry Jared but your comments really irritate me. You don't actually say why Sheffield is the best. It sounds to me like your playing at being a music buff.

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene.

I doubt I'm the biggest music buff on here....

I like Sheffield because I know a bit about the local scene and it's my city. I know bits and bobs about bands coming through in other cities. I'm very impressed with Liverpool at the moment and I'm quite dissapointed with Manchester, given it's history, I'm surprised there's not more great bands coming from there right now.

Also, there's a band I'm aware of, and have already mentioned I don't know how many times, in the Norwich area called the FlyGarricks, they are amazing and on the cusp of a deal.

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

Probably London just due to the sheer amount of music, venues and labels. But for interesting stuff maybe Sheffield,Birmingham or cardiff (although we dont yet have enough decent venues).

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

Glasgow. there's loadsa little venues hidden away, and yeah, lotsa new stuff, consta\nt unsigned gigs that are still pretty damn good, and.....hm...yeh the barrowlands is a great venue...edinburgh...is shit. but i guess i dont know it that well.
Londons only good cause its the capital. damn i wana go to london now.

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

'Londons only good cause its the capital'
someone did/does geography :p

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

hoi you!

lay off Capital City!

it's fine to have a go at london though :)

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

im confused...you having a dig at me?london is the capital rite?of england?and yeh i do geography it sucks floppy donkey dick.

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

yeah, london is the capital of england, and britain.

i was cheerfully reminding you that edinburgh is the capital city of scotland, not glasgow.

no dig intended. im just jealous of your music scene. i admit its better.

i seem to end up over there every week anyway... but at least your less likely to get shot in edinburgh...

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

lol, they don't lie when they say glasgow has "character"!

but it does seem that i spend an increasing amount of time over there, the number of gigs in comparison to here in the 'burgh is shocking, and even the "local support" bands seem decent most of the time.

we have lots of live funk in edinburgh...

*slices off own ears*

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

Australia's music scene differs greatly from everywhere else. Because we are so isolated from the rest of the we have masses of local talent slamming all the local venues.

Brisbane has an awesome music scene. For some reason loads of bands (from all oer Australia) love to come to Brisbane as we are close to everything (the Gold Coast & Sunshine Coast), without being as huge and sellout-mainstream as Sydney or Melbourne. That, and they only have to drive for 30 minutes to get to the Bribie Island Bowls Club (a quiet Australian Joke.)

However, in saying that Brisbane has one thing against it - because it is so beautiful and everything - people from down south are moving up here in the masses. . . And with that, came the tearing down of Festival Hall. THE greatest venue ever!

Everyone from the Beatles to Wiseacre & Girls Germs (two local bands) have played there. It was an excellent venue, right in the heart of the city, big in size... And they tore it down to build penthouses. The BASTARDS!

Everyone from Brisbane and all around Australia will understand and agree when I say that those Penthouses can never, ever replace Festival Hall.

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

Sean Langan is that you? i agree Leeds has one of the best music scenes at the minute. www.leedsmusicscene.co.uk

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

i do like my home towns music scene (portsmouth) cause it has a few decent clubs and we get a lot of peeps cuming there but i do have 2 say that london is a great place to go, so many places to go to see a gd live band!!

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

The best music scenes I have come accross whilst touring are in:

Malmo - where Punk never died
Eindhoven (Rock City)
Aberdeen - the most rock town in the UK
Limmerick - The best place to go for any band!
Hamburg - Bands own the venues!
Berlin - Wild At Heart rules!
etc

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

I would say that Southampton/Portsmouth are both pretty good right now, in terms of hardcore/punk. Indeed, Hampshire in general seems to have quite a vibrant punk scene - annoying since I left there a few years ago. London sucks - very few 'local' bands are worthy of attention, perhaps with the exceptions of The Birds Of Paradise, Silent Front, Capricorns, Chariots (okay, from Watford, whatever) and HEY COLOSSUS, obviously. Oh and Trencher. But, for the scale, 95% of London-based bands are fuckin cack.

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

Shut-up man.
Lowestoft is where it's at. For real.

You'd all suck cock to come and live here, I'm telling ye.
Our local newspaper has been reporting Justin Hawkins' 178,0968 bout of flatulence for four consecutive weeks now. There's gonna be A ROAD NAMED AFTER HIM.
People here (the ones that can speak) think that Whitesnake invented music, yet Jason Arnopp refutes this fact, and tells anyone daring enough to come within two metres of his pot-bellied, sweaty little chancre of a body that nu-metal is the fulcrum of all art... and about 34 kids with rotting KoRn hoodies believe him.

Someone stab Jason Arnopp in the face and kick him until he admits that he's abducted tons of children.

Re: Which city currently has the Best Music Scene...

Jason Arnopp... one for the "hit list".

Aldershot & Farnham both sort of suck a bit, although bands like Vex Red and another one who hav quite a big underground success going on hav done ok for themselves. Vex Red are quite shit, not my sort of thing. Next door in Farnborough Hundred Reasons come from there. But I don't like them either. A'shot & F'ham are just a bit small to have any big venues, although there is The West End Centre (capac. about 200) and the shitty Farnham Maltings (for olds)

However Paul Weller came from Woking and Eric Clapton came out of the rural ghetto of Tongham which is like 5 miles away.

Hopefully with the "regeneration" of Farnham (which has been threatened for longer since Chinese Democracy was first spawned in Axl Rose's brain) there might be a big venue which some decent bands might come to on a national tour.

Luckily though London's only a hour away...
