Pulp:

Best British band of the 90's.
His 'n' Hers... Intro...
David's Last Summer...
Razzamatazz...
Just a whole universe of bedsits and affairs and heartbreak and dancing and style and wit and wonder....
Amazing.

  • i raise you

    radiohead.

    • Pulp belong more to the 90's

And encapsulate more of what was going on in people's lives I reckon. Both brilliant bands, so it's kind of academic which was better. I just had to dress up my Pulp praise in journalistic hyperbole, because I can't help it.

  • without pulp

i would not have liked music in the way i currently do.

  • pulp were absolutely brilliant.

not sure about best band of the 90s, not for me anyway. but still brilliant.

  • Forget you not:

    The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

    • They're not British.

    • i had a dream with them in yesterday

or at least, they were headlining. But the knife were on first, then it all went surreal...

  • It's difficult to argue

as they were fantastic but they weren't my favourite British band of the nineties. They have a lot of great tunes though.

    • Who was yours?

      • I'm not too sure.

I love Radiohead, Pulp, Ride, Slowdive, The Stone Roses. If we're talking about quality over a sustained period I would probably say Radiohead (although your point ^up there about Pulp being more of a 90s band is valid). However as I'm a complete nostalgic (?), I would have to say The Stone Roses as they monopolised my listening for about five years in the 90s. Oh, I don't know, Pulp make a very convincing case.

        • Hang on, scrap that.

I'm going with Underworld. I think.

  • i love pulp so much

  • yeah i think you're right

I cant think of a better british 90s band.

  • Sheffield Sex City!

    Wickerman!
Their last album was SO underrated.

    • I Love We Love Life

      Brainlove speaks the truth.

    • Yes Yes Yes

You're very very right. We Love Life is fucking wonderful. Bad Cover Version in particular is one of my favourite Pulp songs, I love the huge production.

  • They were.

    I strongly agree.

"I fell asleep on your sofa,
and had a dream about a small child,
    in dungarees,
who caught his hands in the doors of the Paris metro.
Then my face cracked open and you were there,
you were there dressed in green,
    saying something obscene.
But that's why I came here in the first place,
Oh well that and the tea."

    BEST ever.

  • i concur

Pulp were one of the first bands that I really got into and were always on when I was growing up.

The more of their back catalogue I unearthed the more I loved them.

A very special and unique band.

    • Although I

like Pulp very much, the best band of the 90's were, in fact, The Fall. Coincidentally, also best band of the 70's, 80's and 00's! Apart from The Fall I propose that Hefner were the best band of the 90's.

      • Top 5 bands of the 90s

ooh Pulp, Furries, Fall, Tindersticks, Pavement.

        • I think SFA

get my nod for best UK band of the 90s

          • Me too

and the '00s too, although Bearsuit might have to share the title.

And i love Pulp. The first band that i love d as a band and not as a group of people making music. If you see what i mean. i'm not even sure i do...

            • His 'n' Hers

              Is an absolute gem.
              Their best album, no question.

              • consider it bought!

it was always This Is Hardcore that caugh my eye how do they compare?

                • This Is Hardcore

                  Is their Britpop comedown album.
                  Possibly their lowest ebb.
Worth hearing still, but not a patch on H'n'H...

                  • no no no

TIH is amazing until the second half, which is bogged down by shitty seductive barry. urgh. but the first half is the 'shiznit'.

                    • We differ.

                      • This is Hardcore

is the only one I really like.

                        • !

                          • The others have good songs

but as albums go This Is Hardcore is totally better.

It's just like how The Bends has better songs on it than OK Computer but is a way shitter album than OKC.

                            • I'd say it was the other way around.

                              • i'd say the bends

has no better songs. and is a bit dump.

                                • But you've always been a wrong person

                • in the word

of cartmans mum: WHAT WHAT WHAT!
get Different Class first. then This Is Hardcore. then His N Hers and We Love Life. then everything else.

yes. best british band of the 90s easily. the fall can have the eighties...maybe.

                  • the title track

from this is hardcore is amazing. worth the price of the album.

                    • i never really got into pulp

i was only interested in oasis and the stone roses at the time. how things change.

          • which Pulp album should i get?

            ?

            • THIS IS HARDCORE

It's their best by a million miles...

  • i saw them at Reading

on their "comeback" gig in 2000. i was right down the front, which led to two things: i was soaked to the skin because of the security guards throwing cup after cup of water into the crowd, and that the sheer number of people was giving off enough body heat to make my glasses steam up so i couldn't see a bloody thing.

however, them playing sorted for Es & whizz = best moment of the entire weeked. AMAZING.

    • Pulp are my favourite band ever EVER

so yes, John speaks truth. Any mention of them makes me want to cry with joy about how wonderful they are. PERFECT.

    • how can you wear glasses at the front of a festival?

  • he's right you know

Pulp were and still are brilliant. They just don't age like the other 90's stuff has.

    • she's right you know

They're grrrrrrreat. My biggest festival regret is not seeing them at Reading in 2000.

      • I saw Pulp in 1995 and they were great.

I still think Underworld were the best British band of the 90s though.

        • I like Underworld

But I never ever ever listen to them now.
And I always thought the albums were quite skip-through-able.
They saved V Festival for me though.
          Awesome live.

          • I have never seen them live

and that is something I am sad about.

I don't skip their albums and even now when I put Dubnobasswithmyheadman on, it still sounds amazing. Second Toughest in the Infants and Beaucoup Fish still sound fantastic too AND they have contributed to some of my best nights out. I love Underworld. Pulp are amazing though. Damn, this is hard.

            • They have had some great club songs

but I never really want to hear pulp much on my stereo.

Dunno. I also loathe a lot of the sentiment of 'Common People' but then that's more of a personal. And the fact it was overplayed to fuck and is probably one of their worst songs barring the way he sings the last verse.

I really really like the first three tracks on We Love Life, though. I remember the production totally blowing me away when I first stuck it on.

              • *except for This Is Hardcore

I meant. That album's a lot more stuff for home. I guess that's why it sort of bombed as I can't really remember much off that you could have played in a club.

  • Indeed

Pulp were just perfect. WIsh they were still knocking around today...

Saw them quite a few times, mostly on the last tour. I remember seeing them at Reading 2002, there had just been a thunderstorm and I was misreable as hell but there was no way I was missing Pulp so I got to the Main Stage just as they were coming onstage and the first 2 songs they played were F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. and Sorted For Es and Whizz - I could have melted, were it not so wet.

    • one of my niggling regrets

is that I didn't go to see Pulp at Reading that year. God knows what I did instead but it must have been inferior

      • i went to see feeder :(

        • hang on, i think that's made me remember

some of my friends went to see feeder in the radio 1 tent. I think I just stayed at the campsite - that's a sad end to this story, i'd hoped i might have been doing something interesting.

      • they clashed

with the 2nd half of Breeders and into the start of Feeder

I remember wanting to see Breeders... something I've still not done :(

    • I remember the Reading gig

      It was great.

I remember the thunderstorm too - I saw some poor kid who'd put loads of bright red colouring in his hair and the rain made it run right down his face and t-shirt!

I've always thought "Something Changed" to be Pulp's best song. I don't doubt others will disagree.

  • I hated Pulp !

    Always have...

    • :O

NO! Gosh Lyle, you surprise me.

      • sorry !

I don't know why but he has always angered me...
Even in his beautiful duo with Miki !

    • urgh

      don't be such a claaarn.

      Jamie

  • take that.

were the best boy band of the 90's, hands down. They reign forever. I wish i could see them live.
