by Mike Diver

Following the success of his book Rip It Up And Start Again, which analysed in no little detail the acts that have made post-punk what it is today, Simon Reynolds has compiled a companion record. Taking the same name as the book, the compilation will be available on May 15th.

'Cos y'all love this shit, here's a tracklisting:

THE FALL 'Fiery Jack'
DEVO (pictured) 'Praying Hands'
PULSALLAMA 'The Devil Lives In My Husband’s Body'
CABERAT VOLTAIRE 'Sluggin’ For Jesus Part 1'
JOSEF K 'Sense Of Guilt'
SCRITTI POLITTI 'PAs'
THE SLITS 'Spend Spend Spend'
FATAL MICROBES 'Violence Grows'
ROBERT WYATT 'Grass'
SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES 'Slowdive'
THE RAINCOATS 'Only Loved At Night'
YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS 'Choci Loni'
THE HUMAN LEAGUE 'Dancevision'

Tis released through the good people of V2.

It doesn't look too bad.

And the book is very good.

The comp looks a bit samey though, I'm sure I've seen other 'post-punk' comps with similar line-ups.

what else would you have on it?

(notbeingfacetiousoraggressive)

Well..

the book details bands such as Joy Division, Wire and PiL so obviously there must have been issues with their record companies.

Pere Ubu would be nice, Maximum Logic, Delta 5, ESG, Bush Tetra's, Liquid Liquid etc.

But then you could fill about 4 discs with great bands from that era.

For that you could have just got

Rough Trade's 'post-punk' compilation. This looks much more eclectic than the usual fare to me, but maybe i'm just excited by them not using obvious choices for each band, e.g. 'Jocko Homo', 'Fairytale In The Supermarket', 'Shipbuilding', 'Ghost Town, 'Nag Nag Nag' etc. etc.

Imagine my disappointment

when I expect this to be about a Razorlight - related competition and find its NOT.

That's

barely imaginable

This looks good and it will 'fill a few holes'

in my collection - that sounds smug doesn't it?

why

doesn't it have Orange Juice - Rip It Up on it?

Hmm

this looks like it might be alright, although it seems to be missing some of the bands he makes a big deal about in the book (as someone has already said). Something from Contortions or PiL would've been good, but it's good that Josef K have got a look in there.
