Annually heralded as both the benchmark of things to come and a summary of just how great the year before was for music, this year's Big Day Out looks pretty darn special (to the point where we looked at the price of flights before writing up this news piece). Last year's festival saw the return of PJ Harvey and the cementing of her relationship with the Queens of the Stone Age guys, after which she ended up singing like she'd been getting more than technical advice from Josh Homme in the studio whilst working on the 'Desert Sessions'.
The 2004 line-up announced so far includes: Metallica, The Strokes, The Flaming Lips, The Mars Volta, The Dandy Warhols, Aphex Twin, DJ Luke Vibert, Basement Jaxx, Black Eyed Peas, Peaches, The Hoodoo Gurus, Something For Kate, Trey, Downsyde, Gerling, Jet, The Butterfly Effect, Magic Dirt, The Datsuns... and there are many more to be announced.
And it takes place...
Fri Jan 16th Auckland, Ericsson Stadium
Sun Jan 18th Gold Coast, Parklands
Fri Jan 23rd Sydney, Sydney Showgrounds
Mon Jan 26th Melbourne, Melbourne RAS Showground
Fri Jan 30th Adelaide, Royal Showground
Sun Feb 1st Perth, Claremont Showground
Tickets are on sale now.

Grinspoon have been around for awhile. Dunno how rock most people over here would class 'em. Sought of a cross between Chillis and Kerbdog. But definately worth Kazaaering if you havn't heard them b4!
COG were another band on the bill last yr who were ok. Didn't get the chance to find any material by them.
My memories a bit cloudy about the other bands; the bill was very similar to the Aug before's Reading/Leeds doobry. QOSTA/Foos were very good. Deftones were just not arsed. Undortunately they'd done the ClearChannel thing and put a D-pen in there :(
I found JJJ an excellant radio station (the national alternative station. I think supported by the Government!) think the link is via http://abc.com.au
They play a fair bit of up & coming bands.
The flights ... hmm not cheap ... if yur lucky u might get somet for 700 but I doubt it - tis peak season in Jan.
Doh I want to be there. Not stuck in this bloody cold & wet country! WHY O WHY DID I COME BACK ???

Big Day Out 2004: Line-Up Announced
underworld were great last year, but both the salmonella dubs and aphex twin stole the show in the boiler room on Sunday.
The world underestimates the amount of Australian talent waiting to be internationally heard
