Jane's Addiction
After a 10 year hiatus, Jane’s Addiction (the band The Red Hot Chili Peppers nicked all their moves from) return to the kind of reception normally reserved for the second coming of Jesus Christ (either that or Duran Duran). Something in the air says this gig is going to be a bit special. Maybe it’s because it’s Halloween, perhaps it's something to with the near-naked riot girls, or is it indeed that everyone here seems to be absolutely hammered?
The mass insobriety is not helped by a string of placards parading about the place depicting a punked up Winston Churchill. Confusion momentarily reigns. It transpires we’ve just been flash mobbed. We’re also agog at the six swim-suited girls lined up on stage brandishing riot shields and doing rude things with truncheons. Phwoar! Etc.
Perry Farrell gets the same reaction when he bounds onto the stage wearing a bodice (bought from fetish clothing range 'Torture Garden' fact fans!). He looks well fit. Goat boy look-a-like guitarist Dave Navarro too looks kinda cute, and new bassist Chris Chaney is built like a brick outhouse. As is powerhouse drummer Stephen Perkins who seemingly has arms like tree trunks.
For sure, Jane’s Addiction are in rude health, musically so, too. Live, 'Strays' has grown muscles: when 'True Nature' kicks in, it hits you in the gut, and when a dazzling semi-acoustic 'Just Because' explodes into a riotous 'Riches' it packs a knock-out punch. Brixton is on the ropes but when the classic ‘Been Caught Stealing’ starts up the place comes bouncing back for more like a punch drunk opponent. The whole place is, literally, rocking.
Farrell is loving it. He milks the applause, egging the crowd on, and chatting up the girls in the front row. He takes the piss out of the balcony ("You gotta any hot dogs and popcorn up there?"), his country, and has a pop at George Bush ("He ain’t my fucking President!"). There is also a touching moment when he crouches down next to Navarro, sat on the edge of the stage, puts his arm around him as if to say, "Y’know it’s gonna be OK. We’re still here! We’ve made it!"
Indeed, Jane’s Addiction are still here, they remain relevant, and they still kick ass. It’s good to have them back.

Janes vs. RHCP
Dubious claim if ever I heard one - RHCP stealing all their moves from JA? Hmmm...-
Re: Janes vs. RHCP
they did y'know. also, the rolling stones nicked all their songs from robert johnson & - this just in - the datsuns stole their ideas from the mc5.-
Re: Janes vs. RHCP
Don't be so bloody condescending...
If Jane's released there first album in 1987 and the Chilis first was in 1984, how on earth do you work that nonsense out.
I like JA but they are actually nothing in comparison to RHCP. And that's not up for discussion.-
Re: Janes vs. RHCP
You're clueless, dude.
I can't say for sure that RHCP did or did not steal "moves" so to speak.. but just because someone puts out an album first, doesn't mean they existed first.
Secondly, RHCP are good.. even great.. But Jane's.. they're sound.. they're lyrics.. innovation.. they're in a league all their own, man.. legendary..
..Well, like I said.. You're clueless-
Re: Janes vs. RHCP
I'm really not clueless, duuude.
I'm right.
You're wrong.
Simple as.
Let's stop this bloody argument before you look stupid.-
Re: Janes vs. RHCP
Chillis have been going a damn long time so they deserve their dues now sa they did when BloodSexSugarMajik got the paludits HOWEVER... JA gave the world Lollapalooza which is a major plus and also a certain RHCP stole Dave Navarro (although JA did 'borrow' Flea for a while)
Fact is, the 2 bands histories are sooo intertwined, it is hard to mention one without the other... as for the better band, hard to call as I really can't decide if 'Give It Away' is better than 'Been Caught Stealing'-
Re: Janes vs. RHCP
Yeah but look at the shit that RHCP did with Navarro, it was arse, wasn't it...

i was drunk -
Jane's Addiction
jane's is a much more talented band than RHCP, and their live shows are much more energetic. compare any jane's show with any peppers show last year.
rhcp is owned. -
Jane's Addiction
RHCP bores the shit out of me...
Anthony Kiedis CANNOT (AND NEVER COULD) SING, whereas Perry has an incredibly unique style....
Frusciante and Dave ARE comparable... but Dave was asked to play with a one Mr. Hendrix's former band, as the only suitable replacement for a GOD.
Perkins drumming is so far and above... almost anyone else... there isn't anything more to say.
Flea was a suitable bassist, but he was playing Eric Avery's basslines... and if you watch him... HE FUCKING loved it.... obviously in awe of someone who knows their shit....
Just because RHCP have MORE fans doesn't make them better... or even comparable. -
Jane's Addiction
I think both JA and RHCP were among the best american bands that paved the way for the explosion of alternative music in the early 90s......Unfortunetly, many years later RHCP are a pure mainstream band, whose last records are rather silly. Instead, JA have made a ground-breaking comeback, and still produce inspired music, far from a mere rip off of their own previous records. As far as guitarists are concerned, Dave clearly overwhelms John, as regards both technique and feeling: his outstanding riffs and textures still highlight in the current scene.-
Re: Jane's Addiction
Nah. John and Dave are both stunning guitarists. 99.9% of the riffs on 'Strays' were practically orgasmic. Mr. Frusciante, on the other hand - special -but not in the blow a hole through your speakers way - much more delicate and dedicated to tiny details and little fills. His new solo album is probably better than By The Way-
Re: Jane's Addiction
I like frusciante's solo records - especially to record only water for ten days. He demonstrates he's got a wider vision of music than his bandmates. Navarro as well was limited while playing with RHCP and this makes me laugh because most people say one hot minute is bullshit and blame it on Dave. The songs on that record personally penned by dave - like warped or shallow be thy game - were amazing. I respect John but I can't accept listenig him produce poor music with RHCP. BTW, listen to Dave's Trust No one. He's really beyond.
