Now reformed some 20 years after they parted company, Captain Beefheart's Magic Band have announced two UK shows for January 2004.

23rd Jan 2004, London Royal Festival Hall (020 7960 4242)
24th Jan 2004, Edinburgh Liquid Rooms (0870 90 33 444)

Ticket prices for London start from £17.50, whilst tickets for the Scotland show will cost £15.00 plus a booking fee.

The Magic Band graced UK shores earlier in 2003, playing the All Tomorrow's Parties festival at Camber Sands and a show at London's Shepards Bush Empire. They also released a new record, 'Back To The Front', through ATP Recordings. Although the Captain himself is no longer a member of the group, the shows, and the album, are still full of the trademark psychedelic loopiness that made the band a household name in the 1960s.

Silly boys...

This is the worst idea ever, apart from the Doors with Ian Ashbury or maybe the great rock'n'roll swindle...still I 'spose the MB deserve a bit of recognition for the years they put up with beefheart, abusing them, starving them, claiming their ideas as his own etc etc.

But still, MB without CB? Who wants to watch a bunch of musicians?

Re: Silly boys...

i do, they were fucking great at atp.

Re: Silly boys...

cobblers they were, i was chuffing chuffed when the fire alarms went off and was evacuated !

Re: Silly boys...

You're probably right, I though I would hate Buzzcocks, Arthur Lee and (ahem) GnR at festivals over the past couple of years, coz they're 'past it' - and how wrong was I on all counts...still I'd rather see Don van Vliet with the Spice girls backing him on toy xylophones than MB without him, genius musicians and fascinating characters though they are. And the 21st century Doors is definitely gonna royally suck...

Saw them at RFH and they were blinding - Drumbo does an uncanny Beefheart impression vocally. Of course it's not the same as DVV in person but you'd still go and hear a Mozart piano concerto even though it's not Wolfie on the keys, wouldn't you?

Agree with Chris. Saw them at RFH and last year at Shepherds Bush. Looked and sounded much more confident this time, with a greater range of material and a smoother structure to the show. The Magic Band without Beefheart does sound like a recipe for disappointment, but was not for me. Seeing such good musicians, very much helped by Drumbo doing such excellent vocals (and percussion of course) performing Beefheart compositions on stage is still a great thrill. I saw CB and various Magic Bands some 14 times between 1972 and 1980. Sure miss the good Captain, but hearing Drumbo and the rest of the MB performing the music Beefheart created live is just so much more exhilarating than playing a CD. Left RFH just as elated and full of those rhythms as had been from a CB concert back in the 70s.

Saw the Edinburgh gig. Head full of the sounds days later. Genuine warmth and a feeling of coming home. Try finding any Captain Beefheart fans is hard these days, but a whole 800!! Hairs stand up at the stuff they played. We can't see Don now, but his spirit was in that small room in Edinburgh. Never seen so many people look so happy. Hope they come back soon. I'll be press-ganging all the infidels to the gig. Best night out I've had in a long time. Long live Drumbo.
