Coming from Oxford would mean that sooner or later, comparisons would be drawn with Radiohead. For Fell City Girl this would probably be considered an honour, and whilst they could hardly be cited as being worshippers at the throne of their hometown's most revered icons, there are also several parallels between the two.
Most noticeably in the fact that both at one time or another relied heavily on building a wall of sound around a hive of brooding intensity (singer Phil McMinn sounds both heartfelt and apologetically sincere) and semi-vicious chiming guitars. If this were 1995 we'd all be in seventh heaven by the third bar of the title track. As time has moved on since then, 'Swim' and its three co-habitants on this EP don't quite have that unique quality about them but there is still a pleasant feeling of satisfaction to be gained all the same. In fact, if Keane were ever to have a stab at making a post-rock record it may ome out something like this. Spooky.
..
keane making post rock?
I never want to hear this record.
Their video looks like an iPod commercial
They're tolerable because they aren't a goddamn boy/girl twosome or a government-sponsored twenty-two-way canadian clusterfuck. They will not extend your space and time, but they should provide a nice backing track for a bottle of white wine and whichever one of your sister's friends you're sleeping with right now.

Keane?
Yuck. I've listened to this a lot, and have to say I can't see it myself. Not as epic as 'Weaker Light' but still four more than decent songs. At least another point from me...
.
Im not sure what to make of this review, it's the second one I've seen that references Keane - why is that? You could say that there's a SLIGHT similarity in Phil's voice but that's where it ends surely?
I ordered the EP as soon as it was out, off the back of seeing them live, because they were incredible. I think perhaps they have better songs than the ones on here, perhaps it was just a case of making a wiser selection.
I understand what the review is trying to say, and in most cases I agree whole-heartedly with drownedinsound reviews, but I gotta say Im enjoying the EP immensley, it's been near on repeat since it arrived - perhaps you gain an extra enjoyment from the recorded stuff if you've seen it live aswell?
Im assuming the reviewer hasn't seen their live show, but i suspect that if he had, then that score would be more like a 7 or 8.
This is still relevant.
It doesn't matter when this was released, it's beside the point. It would have been great in 95, but it's still great now.
