nuff nonsense.
Re: Sell outs
YOu people coin a phrase and use it regardless of context or lack of meaning. Change the fucking record, man.

Re: Sell outs
OK, maybe if Arab Strap soundtracked a McDonalds ad or something, but as a rule of thumb every time I see someone use the phrase 'sell out' I see someone who needs to get out more and talk to normal people. Sound harsh? OK, go and talk to someone who isn't into the same music as you about your views on 'selling out', use the everyman as a barometer. Most people spend the lives being interested in things that actually MATTER, like for instance the price of cheese.
Re: Sell outs
Grrr. I'm a peaceful guy, but snobbery in music always gets to me.

Re: Sell outs
Why bother saying that you've 'teamed up' with Carlinglive.com? What, are you going to tag and complete your finishing move or something?
Does selling out not mean using muscle, be it record label, be it promotional clout of an alchohol merchants website to deliver the end product?
Bands used to say that they'd take on anyone live.
Just them and a lightbulb, they said, and they'd blow the other contenders offstage.
Even if that was the case, now they'd never have the chance to do so. The industry is happier to count on beans as opposed to content.
Plough the good money into the safe bets.
Everyone else can just beg for the scraps.
This is the sowing of those beans, the push of industry as opposed to the value of actual artistic worth.
Promotion pushes for the money in punters pockets, what they don't have in their bank accounts. I know that everyone who puts a product out is selling their wares. But teaming up with Carlinglive.com is like teaming up with an industrial whorehouse.
So much for the romance of independence, eh?
Re: Sell outs
listen precious... 'selling out' is when the lure of filthy lucre makes you go completely against all of your previous principles, and you end up seeming pathetic, and only interested in giving hand-jobs to big business.
in this case, 'Virtual Festivals' helped choose the tunes for a CD that Carling was given away for free. is Virtual Festivals actually DrownedinSound? No. What is DrownedinSound's only crime? providing a link so that should one want this CD, they know where to go.
how is this 'selling out'? what are we selling? nothing. how is this reneging on DrownedinSound's principle of exposing people to great new music? it's not. how is DiS making money from this? it's not.
pleasepleaseplease cut out the sanctimonious 'indier-than-thou' crap. yes, there are many problems with the music industry, but that's hardly the fault of a company that makes alcohol now, is it?
for the record, people should not drink Carling. it tastes like bread.
...must go now, i'm off to go and promote Starbucks while wearing my sweat-shop-made Nike trainers...
Re: Sell outs
Unlike Euro events where the sponsors make an effort to actually put something into the events they sponsor beyond a few crumpled fivers, Carling could not care less about music and literally just see it as one big - and immensely successful - branding exercise. It's a sentiment shared even by Mean Fiddler.
Why do you think the 'feel' of everything they are involved in - from the Reading Festival thru to the all new Carling Islington Bar Academy - carries the same empty feeling and the same line in shit £3.10 per can 'beer'?
Carling get their advertising every time the festival is mentioned. The PRs insist that when Reading or Leeds Fests are referred to, they are done with their full names 'The Cxxxxxx Reading and Leeds Festivals'.
Thus, they get enough mentions, and whether or not a free cd has that branding on really makes no difference to anyone who has an interest in the songs on it.
One normally find that anyone claiming to be highly moralled is just a lot more hyprocritical than anyone else. The NME is fucking owned by AOL/Time Warner (the same people who run Linkin Park inc. etc) - you still buy it. Pizza Hut is owned by Pepsi people - you still bash the buffet on hangover Wednesdays.
Selling out is only an issue if the brand associations somehow diminish or corrupt what you started out to do. The nature of festivals all being sponsored means that big firms cannot be avoided.

Re: Sell outs
I'm lovin' it!
Re: Sell outs
The problem with Carling is not only that it tastes of piss, but that you have no choice but to drink it at events they sponsor (if lager is your drink of choice). Makes Reading Festival a lot less enjoyable than it could be. And when you think of the amount of money they must make at Reading, the least they could do would be to invest a few quid in making the site more bearable... I say this as a festival veteran, not someone who's squeamish of a bit of mud. The site this year was the worst it has ever been and nobody seemed to care.
Re: Sell outs
the longer tha socks, the more cans. of course, you'll need relatively baggy trousers, but I found some simple levis did the trick for three days straight (and, indeed, four years straight).
