The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Ignore bands like Nickelback, Avril Latrine etc....these people don't represent the true Canadian music scene. Seriously though, ever since the arrival of bands like Billy Talent and Hot Hot Heat (two very good bands), everyone here seems to think that Canada are starting to spawn decent bands.

However, there already was a decent music scene, consisiting of long estbalished bands/artists like Matthew Good, Our Lady Peace, Tragically Hip, Gob, Sloan and David Usher to name but a few. More recently, Canada have spawned Sam Roberts, Alexisonfire and Pilate...and the scene is actually quite healthy, in my opinion.

Thoughts/comments??

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

godspeed you! black emperor and affiliated bands. word.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

The Constantines are also getting loads of good press (a Subpop-signed band i heard). Can't forget about good ol' Bryan Adams and Shania Twain though can we...

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Bless Bryan Adams and shania twain.. *wipes tears* so special

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Barenaked Ladies remain dear to my heart.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

The Canadian music scene is BAD....

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

....how??? Explain yourself laddy!!

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Is this some sort of compitition where we all name shitty canadian bands in ironic reference to it's exploding music scene?

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

ye the canadian music scene is grr-eat but they get loads of funding to make albums from the government as part of an arts innovation thingummy so only a few ever make it out of the country. boo!

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

I get where you are coming from. We obviously both live in societies where our music scenes are continually dominated by American and UK bands.

However, there is so much talent brewing within our countries... You just got gotta get it out there. That's the tough bit.

I hear ya. I hear ya.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

danko jones are from canada arnt they? they rule. dirty bozo blues perfection

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Three words - Broken Social Scene. A band that actually lived up to the hype surrounding them. Well, near as possible anyway.

Canada rocks.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Canada has gotten its arse into gear. Unlike the original poster, I happen to think the like of Billy Talent are no-mark bastards lacking in originality, style and decency but let us not quibble. Sloan are close to being the worst band in existence too... but this gets offset by the likes of Fembots, The Unicorns, the fabulous Heavy Blinkers, Broken Social Scene, the Phenomes, Adam Cotton... the 'alternative' side of things is good but mainstream/mainstream 'alternative' Canada is as bad as anywhere else.

Hell, I even enjoy Remy Shand.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

By music you guys just mean 'indie-rock' don't you.

Anyway, one word - Japan. That is where it is at.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

are the Stills from Canada. they are good.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

lots of ace ace ace bands with lots of POTENTIAL coming out of canada (stills, broken social scene). but the bad ones are really REALLY really bad. celine dion and avril lavigne for example.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Canada's the worst country ever! Go Tin Cans!

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

the stills are from canada. in the same way snow patrol are from northern ireland.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

People should check out a group called the unicorns their who will cut our hair when we're gone album was great. There's some mp3s on the alien8 website, really great crazy mordid pop.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

I love the unicorns! Seen them a little while back.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

yeah, i'm with you on this one, the last three bands I've
gotten into (Godspeed You!..., The Constantines and The Unicorns) are all Canadian...

Billy Talent are terrible though, bad pop-punk with a comedy Elvis impersonator. As Rocket From The Crypt'll tell you, that just doesn't work...

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

The list of great Canadian artists is as follows:

Matthew Good
The Weakerthans
The Stills
Broken Social Scene
Metric
Stars
The Dears
Limblifter
Hot Hot Heat
Hawksley Workman
The Constantines
Godspeed you! Black Emperor
Sam Roberts
Tragically Hip

to name just a few

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Shit, I forgot the New Pornographers and the Unicorns.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Matthew Good is not great, he's a horrible whining self-important arsehole who makes Tom Yorke look like cheerful Ronald McDonald.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Do you believe everything you read/see/hear?

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Ok...the moon is made out of cheese bi-products =P

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

No, I just listen to Matthew's impotent high school angst whine that dribble out of alongside dull as fuck guitars and know a self-important tosspot when I hear it though. The Unicorns and the Heavy Blinkers absolutely fucking rule though. The Premiums are amusing too.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Mmmm gonna have to disagree....I like Matthew Good a LOT. Hasn't produced a bad album yet. He's pretentious? Probably. Self-important? Yup. But he makes good music......

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Each to their own. My wife had a backstage VIP pass to a gig of his she attended a while back. She was so bored she gave it away. he seems like a very earnest young chap, weight of the world on his shoulders etc, reedy whine of a vocal style...

But enough negativity. Let's spread the love.

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Ooooops, that's a point; forgot to mention the Dears and Hawksley Workman. Remembered just after I started the thread.

Anyone heard the Dears' "No Cities Left" album? Pure genius....

Re: The Canadian music scene is GOOD....

Yeah, I own that one plus a few eps. Fantastic stuff. The title track is amazing.
