What factors do we need to add up here tho?
- most consistent albums
- best live shows
- most culturally significant
- most popular
- most under-rated
- solo acts?

Otherwise just generally best band ever, will just be peoples favourite bands...

Yeah. I could only tell you my favourites, which are not even close to being the best bands ever. I'll admit that. But hey, it's safe to say that the Rolling Stones are pretty culturally significant.

I'd agree with that, but when it comes down to it, it's impossible to pick one particular band, because there may be different reasons why you like them etc etc... No, my head's still going...

REM, definitely :) Or not very definitely, cos its next to impossible to make a definitive judgement on it. But they're my favourites anyway and it's pretty hard to deny that they have been both truly innovative and inspirational (pre-Up, at least).

Take my advice - go see colour of fire perform and you will be converted. Their live sound is so full of energy they would definitely be in the running for the title.

you shouldn't even joke about that. it isn't funny. i still have painful memories from the last time i saw colour of fire live "no, mummy, not another british band shamelessly endosing every american indie-rock cliche ever , but hoping no-one will notice because they have nice cheekbones! i'm going to sleep with the light of tonight".
