The Science Bit...
This chart was compiled from the votes of our staff, who chose their top 20 albums of the year, with number 1 scoring 20 points and number 20 scoring 1 point. There was a two vote minimum to get into the chart. Radiohead scored nearly 200 points.

Some of these records are missing reviews. Reviews will appear on the site in the coming weeks.

DiScuss: What were your albums of the year? Who was robbed? Anything here surprise you? Do you think this chart represents what DiS is all about and what has gone on in 2003?

DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Er. What no Alabama 3: Last Train to Nashville???

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Radiohead? Number One? I don't fucking think so. The Darkness are Britain's number one band. FACT!
As for the rest I think it's great Hell Is For Heroes & Elbow can nestle in the Top 10 alongside Cat Power & Blood Brothers (neither of whom I've heard of).
As for all you indie saddo purists who think DiS has to be some duffel coated vessel championing a bunch of shoegazing losers do me a favour FUCK OFF!
There is more in this life than Jetplane Landing. I want ambition, excess, success, ego, attitude, sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll. THAT'S THE WHOLE FUCKING POINT MORONS!
All you 'haters' go have a wank over yer Belle And Sebastian albums in a chalet at All Tomorrows Parties.
Fer fecks sake!

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

haven't you got a phil collins 3 gig to go to Chris? :)

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

You're a pretty obnoxious little shit really, aren't you?

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

who? me? awww shucks! you're too kind. Actually, I've just read your user profile - Turin Brakes, Radiohead, "I like indie music me" you're a bit of a cunt really ain't ya? Listen mate don't pick on us music hacks - we can keep this shit up all day. Back to mummy with you, go on.

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Hang on, hang on - calm down, calm down. Remember these are opinions!!

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

awww come on Chris I'm a pussy cat really!

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Oh, I see. Because I list that I like Turin Brakes and Radiohead, I'm a lesser human being.

The main problem I have with 'hacks' like you is you just lambast other people without provocation and then act in this holier-than-thou sense that, because you work 'within in industry' or whatever you like to call it, your opinions are somehow more valid. They're as valid as everyone else's - music is all about taste, and you can only say what you like. You can't say there's a 'fact' that any album is good or bad, even if it's agreed by popular concensus. Just remember it's all about opinions, friend. Now if you're analysing the music in terms of technicality and skill and actual innovation in music - you're talking about something away from the simple in terms of rhythm, tone, harmony, all that shit. If you've got, say, a music degree, I'll sit back and take all the crap you want to throw at me for not being indier-than-thou. Just because you've seen a lot of gigs and listened to a lot of albums does not make your opinion more valid than practically anyone. It only makes your taste more definite, you know what you like. That's fair enough, but it still doesn't really give you the right to lay into other people that bad and talk about 'facts', especially when it's saying one band are better. The Darkness - fair enough if you like them, but there are no facts that they are better or worse than Radiohead. You like something rocky? Fine, but it doesn't give you any right to say it's better than any other style of music.

You've dug yourself a nice little hole there. Now sit down in it while we fill it in, please.

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

it still doesn't give you the right to call me a "obnoxious little shit" though does it when you don't know who I am? That's a bit like me slagging off a band I've never heard, seen or met. I don't give a shit anyway - I'm off to the Caribbean for two weeks come Monday so fuck you.

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

christ on a bike!!! I wish you people would just get over these things. This is a list of albums compiled by people who write for this particular website, nothing more. If you look closely you'll see that there are similarities between this list and those of other websites and publications. These lists tend to be for the masses by the (slightly smaller representation of the) masses. People will always disagree, that's what people do. You'll always bet the people who like muse, elbow and turin brakes being slagged off for being uneducated NME types. But you'll also get the indier-than-thou, Careless Talk loving weirdos (ME) who take their fair share of stick too.

PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT. If this website covered things like timberlake and westlife there'd be writers suggesting their albums are the best of the year and then you'd have to spend some more time slagging them off.

Let it go. Go off and listen to your favorite records and forget what everybody else has said. Does it really matter anyway?

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

its true. i disagree with a fair proportion of albums on that list and i voted in the thing. Radiohead getting number 1 doesn't mean we all worship them, it simply means that they were mentioned on more/higher up on peoples lists.

i dont know how you people find the time to chase your own tails with arguements that can clearly never be resolved because it all comes down to your own opinions and tastes. You're never going to agree so... like.. getoverit.

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

This is gettin' too intellectual! Can't we just insult Brusma? I mean come on, Aqualung, Alfie, Turin Brakes?

Do your ears explode when something is a bit too loud?

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Nah, I don't mind going to louder gigs (well... Mars Volta loud.)

I just choose to listen to quieter music. It's easier to appreciate on record.

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Hmmmm, Girls Aloud in the top 50?
I lost all respect for the list when I saw that. But I do think you've more or less hit the nail on the head with the rest of the list. Good job.

And to all the sensitive types, stop whining. It's Christmas, season of goodwill and all that. Just have another beer, you'll be fine laddies. Never know, might even lose your virginity while you're at it *thumbs up*

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

TRANSLATION:

*eyes well up from the sting of righteous chastising* "Well... you did something bad too....*sniff, sniff*... but, *sniff* I don't care anyways. SCREW YOU GUYS...I'M LEAVING!" *red-faced, slams bedroom door*

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Hey, is your name Imran Ahmed by anychane? Do you write for NME?

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

The Darkness aren't the country's number one band, but even if they were, this was a poll regarding our favourite albums, not bands!

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Alabama 3 - It's "Mashville" - not "Nashville" - no worries. The record is good - too bad this band is pegged 'alt.country techno geeks' b/c of the Sopranos theme - but they drink whiskey and bathe in blood...

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

anyone got Volume 1? not heard it yet

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Before anyone shouts "Hey, don't shoot the messenger, this list is the combined opinions of the staff", I'm not arguing, but these are my opinions.

I'm not sure what Biffy Clyro are doing in there, they're nowhere near as good as people make out. As for Funeral for a Friend, unfortunately they've gone the way of the parent-friendly heartfelt emo band who started off raw but unfortunately remixed stuff and never sounded quite as good again. As for BRMC, in my opinion they should not even have a record deal, to quote the title of a song by Instruction, "Death to the four-car garage band".

Jetplane Landing should have been higher as should Thursday, and this list is sorely missing the Copperpot Journals, Lightyear and Forever Until October. Also, if this list is indeed cosmopolitan, I would include Nitin Sawhney - Human as this was one of the most beautiful creations I heard all year.

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

I voted Copperpot Journals. Don't think anyone else did though.

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

yeah human was a good album, damnit.

DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Actually, has to be said, pretty damn good list. I will back off from laying into The Darkness as I'm feeling quite bright and sparky this morning. But Zwan so high? Seriously?? Which suggests some kind of consensus that it's a good worthy effort? Dear God.

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

I have to agree the Darkness may be the most fun album in the list, but there are quiet a lot more musically...intricate albums around, some that didn't even make the list (Tom McRae my personal favourite ain't there), so I can see why Darkness came high...but....well I don't agree. Different strokes for different folks an' all that.

Incidentally, check out www.metacritic and their section on music, and you can find out what the average of all reviews for a fair few albums (reviews from UK and US iirc) and find the top lot an' all that. Led Zeppelin top? Well well well...

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Yeah... Tom McRae noticable by his absence! His latest is a beautiful work.

DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Maximilian Hecker?
Not very *exciting* I grant you, but a wonderful album nonetheless!!

mew, stellastarr* and PGMG should be higher too!

in my humble..

sp

DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

But the Radiohead album is average at best!

DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

first I saw...

8. Zwan Mary Star of the Sea?

and I though "hmmmm". then I saw...

47. Metallica St. Anger

and I said "I quit"
bunch of wrong 'uns

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

I must say that after reading through this list, the shocking predictability, even from DiS writers, is saddening. DiS is a site championing new music, and great music, and yet there's Hell is for Heroes at number, erm, 10? They're like a carbon copy of equally average acts that were knocking about three or four years ago. And then there's Zwan and a whole host of other albums that really aren't worthy of such high acclaim. I can understand that a few people might place them highly, but with so many people voting (I presume; if all the writers under contacts voted) I expected a more balanced and less high-profile chart. Still, nice to see Cat Power so high.

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

This is true, as a site we do promote new bands an music but each article is written by an inidividual. It is the same as being with your mates and one says 'I have heard the best album EVER!'... not all of you guy and buy as it may not be to your taste or you just can't afford it. An example in caser is that my album of the year didn't even get into the top 75! Remember, this is based on a general overview, not the definitive opinion of the whole site i.e. the number one album is not everyones favourite...

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

My top record didn't make it either.
Maybe we should have a 'close but no cigar' section?

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

It's weird, I only voted for about 2 of the top 20 records and I'm pretty sure there are a lot of other people who regularly contribute to the site who had about the same amount of their records of the year near the top.

I did look confusedly at Zwan and Hell is For Heroes and Elbow too for that matter, getting quite so high. Then again, Distillers, Strokes and White Stripes all did oddly well...

We're going to be doing a few other runs downs of the year which should go someway to giving a personal and collective view of the year.

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

in what way does elbow being up so high confuse you? whatever your position on them as a band the album remains a beautifully crafted, confident and ambitous work. and it is probably my number 1 album of the year without a doubt. which is obviously why i'm kicking up a fuss. but seriously, it's gorgeous. really gorgeous.

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

I really like the record too (was at the bottom end of my top 20). Am just confused, if you look at the kinda things that get written about on DiS day in day out that the kinda people who voted for elbow don't take part in dis on a day to day basis and the album hasn't even been reviewed on the site...

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Then hurry one of your leetle minions up, Sean! :P

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

I think it would be more interesting to see each individual writers top 10 or something then we could see how diverse the staff are. This kind of vote doesn't seem to give a clear picture of anything other than maybe most people quite liked ..... get my drift?

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Small Brown Bike and TAV
yesssssss.....

can't believe the Black Lung Captain didn't make the DIS list proper. Surely one of the best records by a homegrown act this year???

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

It certainly is... This Ain't Vegas and The Murder Of... are blinding albums. Murder Of missed out coz I got it after compiling my list.

Seriously though, the Ten Grand and Bear Vs Shark records are immense.

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

i'll check 'em out when I get some chrimbo funds....
I didn't enjoy that SBB album nearly as much as Dead Reckoning tho.
Plus i'll never get to see them live now....

fucking sucks

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

The River Bed isn't a patch on Dead Reckoning, that's true, but it's SBB innit? They HAD to be in there somewhere.

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

too true, my friend!
I have to ask, tho, what's yer problem with Cat on Form?
I thought structure and fear was very good indeed, a fine follow up to their first ep. And live, they really do the fucking business....

Re: DiS Staff Top 75 Albums of 2003

Cat On Form never really clicked with me. I'm often a little too hasrh about them, but I just don't like 'em. Something annoys me that I can't quite put my finger on, plus I find them remarkably generic. BUT, the first time I ever saw 'em they were good, just haven't impressed the three or four times since.
