Bang Bang, It's Dead

Following the death of Careless Talk Costs Lives, there's been another victim of music magazine publishing this month - after only nine months, Future Publishing has closed Bang.

"BANG is no more," says editor Dan Silver, who took over the running of the mag after the launch editors, Crispin Parry and Danny Ford, left after three months into its life. "I believe that the powers that be may well be drawing up an official statement," he continues, "but I really wouldn't hold your breath... Until they do, I'd like to take this opportunity to unofficially thank everyone here [their messageboard] for their kind words and support.

"I think that the staff of Bang will be scattered far and wide... we will always be recognisible by the scars that we bear. Here's to the future (as opposed to the Future). It's been... emotional. Cheers!"

Writer Sarah Bee added, a little poignantly, "it's like the Maker all over again, everyone losing their jobs for Christmas having slogged [their] guts out on [the] bumper Xmas issue and first issue of new year simultaneously."

The current issue of the magazine is expected to be the last.

Bang Bang, It's Dead

Oh for Goodness sake. This was one of the best new magazines in ages... I thought it was the best 'mainstream' indie pubblication since Select. It took on loads of the really good journalists that lost their jobs after Melody Maker (such as the excellent Neil Kulkarni, to name one).

All we need now is for X-Ray to bite the dust and we'll be stuck with the pissing NME again...

Bang Bang, It's Dead

thats a disappointment

its one of the best music mags out there

Bang Bang, It's Dead

seemed inevitable really, there was always a big stack of them at the local WHSmiths left unbought.

it was a good read, i liked it.

Re: Bang Bang, It's Dead

It really wasn't a good read. The first couple of issues were *ok* but after that it was shite.

Can someone please enlighten me as to why the Gloom brothers stopped their involvement with it? Their old magazine Circuit was ace.

The NME

What I dobn't get is that no matter how many Mags close down the worst one of the lot manages to keep going.

Re: The NME

Not forever. Mark my words...

Re: The NME

yeah, but its better than kerrang, isnt it?

Re: The NME

Just about. But at least Kerrang nails its colours to the mast with what it likes, rather than being driven by a constant quest for 'cool' and 'what it's OK to like'. For instance, Kerrang still supports acts like Iron Maiden as well as new music. I'm not a Maiden fan, but this comparison illustrates the NME's biggest problem, or at least the present-day NME's biggest problem...

Re: The NME

The problem is that if you want a good general music read, there's nothing out there at the moment. I'm sorry but any mag that just covers one or two genres, e.g. Kerrang, is by definition crap in this respect. There is no real talent at any mainstream music mags right now. If people can find an exploitable market they'll milk it for all it's worth regardless of quality...

Re: The NME

It's mad, you've got to get two or three different mags a month to cover all your tastes. When Bang came out I thought it was ace, but worried that not enough Q readers would buy it.
Oh well back to Rocksound and The Fly (cause it's free and I'm skint).

Bang Bang, It's Dead

totally agree. NME is piss poor, their attitude sucks, they lost all their good journalists over a year ago...they consistently hype shite and kids lap it up until they actually go to see the band's in question...I mean come on...Jet...The Vines...The Libertines...all complete shite. By force feeding the same 10 shit bands round and round they are just digging a grave for themselves. Let's see which of the BritPack they hype to hell this time around...I mean it's a choice of crap vs crap...Kid Symphony, do us a favour, My Red Cell - even worse...Shame about Bang! as it was a good mag that wasn't desperately seaching for the "...it's cool to like them" vibe. RANT RANT RANT. I genuinely like DiS (which I guess is why I'm here), Rock Sound and Uncut. You know it's all about the music...

Bang Bang, It's Dead

When did Careless talk end??? I did work experience there for a bit and was hoping to again, dammit :(

Re: Bang Bang, It's Dead

Wasn't Careless Talk born to end? (To quote the Manics...)

I seem to recall it started at issue 12 and was counting down to zero, at which point they hoped to have destroyed the mainstream music press. In which case, um, you got Bang. D'oh.

Re: Bang Bang, It's Dead

Ahh yes...I recall the counting down thing tho was hoping they'd just carry on regardless. Just read that Steve Gullick and Mr True r both doin new mags so something else to look fwd to.
Bang wasn't great...content was ok but shite layout.

Bang Bang, It's Dead

my favourite ever careless talk editorial was steve gullicks..... BANG. You're dead.
that magazine was shite, and the dead fashion pieces were so abhorrent it wasnt true. good riddence

Re: Bang Bang, It's Dead

I thought the gag with CTCL was that it always had a strictly limited run of issues; that was why they counted their issue number backwards, therefore number 1 was the last issue.

Bang Bang, It's Dead

i know all about here, theprp.com, shoutweb and pitchforkmedia....

are there any other really good internet based music magazines?

Bang Bang, It's Dead

bang was shite. there, i've said it

Bang Bang, It's Dead

Online zines are the way forward:

another zine:

Bang Bang, It's Dead

fuck, i really liked that magazine.

Bang Bang, It's Dead

www.shite-indie-bands-reviewed-with-importance.tk ! ! !

Everyone else in this thread is! Cool!

(We haven't the money for a .com or even a .net, we spend all ours on ltd-200-pressing derivative 7 inches to review in excited tones of anything's-better-than-N.M.E superiority to obscure any inaccuracies. And wanking. We even do both at the same time when really excited.)

Re: Bang Bang, It's Dead

You haven't heard of a band - so they're shit? At least another e-zine bothered to review the Strange Fruit Festival.

Re: Bang Bang, It's Dead

hahaha... that's pretty much the only remotely funny post i've seen on these boards. ever. well, it wasnt that funny. but i like making fun of internet-indie-snobness. good work.

Bang Bang, It's Dead

I don't care about Bang. The magazine was rubbish and the male writers were sexist.

I am however upset by Careless talk.. it was one of the only magazines to write passionately about bands. We are left with NME (zero content), Q (springsteen/U2 loving rubbish), Xray (not too bad but a bit glossy and not very indepth for a monthly) and Uncut (nothing good or bad to say about it).

Damn

confusion with Guardian article

http://media.guardian.co.uk/presspublishing/story/0,7495,1106180,00.html

"The title, which launched in March and was aimed at 16 to 24-year-old men"

then>

"Bang was aimed at a readership which was too old for the likes of NME"

So what age group is NME aimed at then? Under 16 year old GIRLS?

Re: confusion with Guardian article

It is at the moment.

With it's fucking masks and darkness wrapping paper.

Next week, there is a free pack of Love Hearts!

Re: confusion with Guardian article

it's weird, cus all the stuff i heard about bang whence i was scribing bits for it, had nothing to do with gender and they had a fair idea that it wasn't all about boys and there were lots of things done to make it appealing to both sexes.

i thought bang was aimed more at the 20-30 year old market, what with all the polyphonics, flaming lips and dead fashion type stuff. had they gone for that instead of being confused i think the mag coulda been kept afloat. it needed more kulkani and to have got ben myers on board and focussed much more on predicting, rather than chasing things that were there (or at least had videos and marketing budgets). they just weren't prepared/allowed to take risks and just like the problem with the music industry where bands get signed too early and dropped before they've had chance to develop and cultivate a fanbase, let alone get as far as that all important fifth album was a concept about balloons.

it's little wonder things are in such a sorry state. so much great music, so many idiots... why did dido sell so many records? it's the deariest (sp?), dullest pap i've ever had the misfortune to hear pumping outta dorothy perkins. it's all because of the outlets (or rather the lack of) and the media's focus problems and the fact just like a&r, everyone wants to know what everyone else thinks and no-one really has an opinion of gut instict they believe in.

where are the weirdos taking ridiculous risks? it worked for the KLF...

Bang Bang, It's Dead

that Guardian article said it has 8 full time staff.

how many would the nme have, about?

Re: Bang Bang, It's Dead

about the same, poss a few more. NME have been getting back to intelligent music writing since the relaunch so...

Re: Bang Bang, It's Dead

where is that then? all i've seen the past two (cus my housemates buy it!) is lots of pointless lists, including cat power in their albums of the year, even tho they've not written a thing about her. and why are they trying to put me off the magic that is rufus wainwright? the guys written one of the finest records of the year and he just shouldn't be getting the attention from those white strokes types.

Re: Bang Bang, It's Dead

To be fair, NME have always been all over Rufio W. That's how I got into him back when Poses came out.

Re: Bang Bang, It's Dead

Hahahahahahahahhaghahahahhahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

((dies fucking laughing))

Please tell me more about this new NME with added intelligent music writing, I thought they finally stopped that for good after 2000. They even still employ Mark Beaumont for christ's sake..

Re: Bang Bang, It's Dead

There are fuckloads at NME. I counted about 60 computers in their office when I was being nosy. Not sure how many of them are fulltime.

Re: Bang Bang, It's Dead

Many are listings, admin, and marketing folk. The NME is sadly mow little more than a marketing toy than the music bible it once was.

Re: Bang Bang, It's Dead

"Many are listings, admin, and marketing folk"

plus designers and webmonkeys.

all employees, nonetheless.
