"We'll only let you down" spits Matthew Oakes after the third drumbeat of opener 'Cut Your Hair', which anyone who's ever had the pleasure of witnessing an LED! live show will know is a blatant, preposterous lie.

No, the real let down here is the recorded-in-a-toilet-with-the-taps-left-running production. This EP should come with a free subscription to Audifon, as even the most hi-tech grade of hearing aid would have difficulty picking up the vast array of sounds LED! have concocted to put 'Faster, Faster...' together. If St Hubbins, Tufnel and Smalls were in the building they wouldn't be asking if someone could turn it "one louder", they'd be asking for a new rig of amps. It's all a bit of a shame because the aforementioned '...Hair' and Blair-baiting 'Fort Washington' - both long term staples of LED!'s live set - sound like lost sheep in need of a compass and map in comparison to the gargantuan epics their stage alter egos embellish. Maybe 'Louder, LOUDER...' would have been a more appropriate title?

On the positive side though, listen closely to 'The Russian Greats' and you'll hear a lone female voice (one Leah Donovan) scream "you're just an arsehole!" before admitting "I don't know why I came here - it seemed a good idea at the time" like a female sibling of the Arctic Monkeys; likewise 'An Equation', which flits between balladry and post-rock ascension with some aplomb. It's a shame, then, that poor production has tarnished what would have undoubtedly been an excellent EP showing off four very different sides of Love Ends Disaster!'s character.

yeah

we had a bit of trouble with the production. still, hopefully the songs just about come through..........maybe....!

And Leah's great isnt she? :)

Well um..

check out http://www.myspace.com/loveendsdisaster and hear for yourselves! £££'s of production isn't always an option.

well...

the songs are great though aren't they?

well...

...it seems like everyone should definitely come see them in the flesh when they go on tour with us (Popular Workshop) at the end of July... Gargantuan epics? Hell yeh! (At least we will be after a week of road-side McDonalds...)

Well well

I bloody love ends disaster!

IMO...

...I think too much emphasis has been placed on the quality of the production in this review over the songs. Yes, the calibre of the production should count towards the end mark, but I think you've weighted the review heavily on the sound rather than the content.

When a band doesn't have mega-bucks to spend (ie they're not on a major label) I think you can forgive them somewhat and the focus should be on the songs. This got the same mark as their first ever demo, the quality of which was far worse! 'Faster, Faster' is a vast improvement from that so it's a surprise to me that the mark hasn't increased accordingly.

Hmmm

I can see your point to an extent but at the same time, anyone who's seen LED! live and knows the songs will be a tad disappointed upon hearing the way they've been recorded on this EP. Compare it to the sound quality on the Songs For The Dislocated EP and well...there is no comparison to be honest!

To be fair with the demo, that's all it was meant to be, a demo, so shouldn't really be taken into context with that of a fully fledged, widely released single.

Budgetary constraints aside, I think that any prospective record buyer should be made aware of what they're gonna be buying, and to be fair I've not criticised the band as such.

...

...it's cool, I wasn't saying you were being critical of the band, however you know that people can look at a review, see a 6/10 and assume that the songs themselves are rubbish so may overlook the EP - when in fact the songs themselves are great, but may have been let down by the recording. That's the only concern here.

I personally don't think the production is that bad, I've heard a lot worse (worst ever production that always springs to mind was a band called Star Spangles, it could have been recorded on a knackered dictaphone, under a tin bucket, in a garage for all I knew.)
This EP was recorded a year ago as well, they're doing some new stuff next month, so fingers crossed they get good results and can replicate their live form.

I remember

the Star Spangles. Second rate Strokes wannabees.
I know what you mean tho about looking at the score at the bottom. I think if the sound quality was better it would have got at least an 8.

The funniest thing was...

...Star Spangles would NOT go away and sent me about 5 copies of their album even though I slated the singles. Sending promotional bubblegum didn't make me like them any more, either.

Everyone should go and see LED live though.

Yesss!!!!!

the promotional Bazooka bubblegum!!!!
Now I'm REALLY GONNA LIKE YOUR BAND! Go away indeed...

An

interesting debate indeed. Hmmm,Oakes just sent me a demo of ambient electronica featuring a cub scout choir. No joke, this is our new direction.

Really like this EP...

I think the band have some refining to do, but generally speaking they are infitinitely more interesting than your average indie fodder. The tracks really grow on you as well...
