Why play seventeen notes when two will do? Well, now you can find out, as Gut are to release a double-disc prog-rock compilation next month.

Released in co-operation with the bods at Classic Rock, the nicely-timed-for-Father's-Day record (out June 12th) features the likes of Yes, Genesis, Marillion, Rush and Emerson Lake & Palmer (pictured).

Also featured are Blue Oyster Cult, but were they really prog? To be fair, my too-young memory rather obviously fails me.

Still, something to ask your dad, eh.

DiScuss: So once I played Yes in a club, and some guy - a young guy - shook my hand. Wouldn't John Peel be turning in his grave?

Prog Rock

Is genius. And i'll have no bad words said against it.

Everyone go listen to Rush, right now!

i'm not really a rush fan

ELP, King Crimson, early Sweep the Leg... oh BABY.

there's nowt wrong with rush

what about spirit of radio and 2112 - and any band who's lead singer is called 'geddy' has to be good. Surely?

Spot on!

And any band with a drummer as good as Neil Peart...

Hold on alex Lifeson will get left out

my brother 'got me into' Rush so I should hate them as he is a cunt but oh no they is good as is some yes and ELP - well what can you say about this portentious 3 piece that isn't bad?

Neil Peart?

Come on! Geddy Lee, best Bass player ever

PS

I actually remember not so long ago in the Arena in Middlesbrough, this guy was telling me that I should listen to Yes cos the Bass player was amazing. I didn't know the guy, god knows why he was telling me this but anyway yeah prog rock = good bass players

Defintely.

Geddy Lee is an absolutely incredible bass player. Alex Lifeson is also a fantastic guitarist, but they are both overshadowed by neil Peart. He seriously is the best drummer i've ever heard. Absolutely immense...

I'm a father and

if my kids bought me that for fathers day there would be 2 dead children in west London on June the 18th.

Best post ever

i like it

but prog-rock is not the sorta thing i like to Rush into. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

...

RUSH?! Hell will freeze over before I listen to a Rush song for enjoyment and pleasure.

They sound like the chipmunks.

I could listen to King Crimson all day though... well... a couple of hours a go, anyway.

i hope i've remembered the quote correctly:

"Emerson Lake and Palmer - a waste of air and electricity"...something like that.

Aside from some of the Floyd, parts of Gabriel-era Genesis and a bit of King Crimson (unless you count Mars Volta, Radiohead yada yada) i can't really bring myself to say i like prog rock. Both my Dad and my step-dad adore it...but i just think of Rik Wakeman playing with his organ (ooh-err) in a sea of dry ice and feel a bit repulsed.

;

there's two sides to prog. And the histrionic and mostly unprogressive Yes/ELP/Floyd side is waaaaay too overbearing.

BUT.

Genesis, King Crimson, Caravan, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, Camel, Black Widow...

CARDIACS

ye buggers

how many drummers does it take to change a lightbulb?

44. 1 to change the bulb and 43 to stand around saying how Neil Peart would have done it better.

Neil Peart and the rest of those Ayn Rand loving twats make me very angry.

"Emerson, Lake and Palmer are a waste of talent and elctricity"

Is the line. And very true it is too.

No its not

Emerson Lake and Palmer are amazing. They made an album about an Armadillo with rocket launchers who tries to take over the world. How can they not be good?

oh YES

Gentle Giant.
