PRS: Confirmation that 2003 Was a Great Year for Live Music
Posted: 13 Jan '04, 11:16
If you don't need any convincing that 2003 was a great year for live music, please look away now...
The Performing Rights Society confirmed yesterday (Jan 12th) that they expect over £10 million in royalties to collect and distribute to their members, from live shows in 2003 - the highest figure since the Society was set up 90 years ago.
Putting the boom down to a strong economy, PRS director John Axon made the following statement: "It has been an exceptional year on the concert front - the best ever for revenues. It has become part of the culture to attend one of more of the big live events of the year."
We're sure the Darkness would tongue-in-cheekedly love to believe this is all down to them, and Robbie Williams probably has a bit of a knowing smirk on his face at this news, but it really is clear that 2003 was the year when the internet opened more doors to new music, by allowing fans to sample even more bands than ever, become members of informed communities and has made gig information available at the tap of a key. But, the internet and mtv, has also created a need for people to go out more, to get away from the screen and back out into reality, not that there is any research that we know of to back this up.
DiScuss: What were your top 5 live highlights of 2003? Where is your favourite venue? And what do you believe can be done to improve the live scene in 2004? Have you heard any good festival rumours yet?

Hmm...I've not managed to catch much live music this year, and I missed the festival circuit.
So my highlights were probably Mars Volta, British Sea Power and (I know i'll get shouted down for this) Coldplay.
Just my favourite three gigs of the year. -

Been to some great gigs in the last year. Stellastarr*, PGMG, Redheaded Stepchild.
However, gig tickets (booking fees, handling charges, big venue prices) are a massive rip-off, so no wonder those fucks are making more money than ever before. -

Fugazi at The Forum hands down. Hackney Ocean for sound quality, Glasgow King Tuts, Cathouse or Bradford Rios for a rocking good time. -
Re: PRS: Confirmation that 2003 Was a Great Year for Live Music
Indeed! Sigur Ros at Glasto was my live highlight of 2003. I was actually crying and felt totally and utterly mesmerized for the whole set. Praps i was passively smoking crack, but it just utterly moved me. A band haven't done THAT to me for years.
I think i'm still struggling to find an absolute favourite venue. Thought Tunbridge Wells Forum was quite a good venue, even if it is a converted toilet. Really like the vibe at the Freebutt in Brighton and Bath Moles too.

Actually, while I'm at it
Bruce Springsteen - Crystal Palace Sports Stadium, April
Redjetson - Dublin Castle, January
Alkaline Trio - Islington Academy - October
And, as Sean is standing over my shoulder asking me to justify myself...
AC/DC - The cannons, the cannons
Radiohead - The bass for The Gloaming
REM - we were *that* close, and Drive and all the other classics
Springsteen - Born To Run, obviously. Always and forever. And what an ass.
Bloc Party - pure frenetic genius, and the culmination of a years hope and faith
Redjetson - ten minute closer 'music from the Gods' and the first FanDiSco.
Funeral For Friend... singing at the top of my voice with a certain =pw=.
Alkaline Trio - beer, moshing and high fives supported by shooters.

PRS: Confirmation that 2003 Was a Great Year for Live Music
I heard a festival rumour. Someone told me that they'd make the Reading Festival site bearable this year, by making the camping area humane and offering more than just Carling at the bar. I just laughed. -
PRS: Confirmation that 2003 Was a Great Year for Live Music
Best unsigned venue: Cafe Drummonds, Aberdeen
Best venue: Barrowlands, Glasgow
Best Gig: The A.M. at King Tuts, Glasgow-
Re: PRS: Confirmation that 2003 Was a Great Year for Live Music
Blur at reading were great
The Astoria is also a fantastic venue. The best venue for unsigned bands to play is The Garage in Islington, or The Underworld (Camden), although neither venue tends to consistently book good unsigned bands (just crap ones who bring lots of mates)-
Re: PRS: Confirmation that 2003 Was a Great Year for Live Music
Low at the Union Chapel, Radiohead and Calexico at Glastonbury, Nada Surf at ULU, and Spoon at the Spitz.
May have been a good year for live music, but album wise it wasn't as good as it could have been. Plenty of big releases, but only a few really punched their weight.
Hope this year is a bit better.
