So Joss Stone is tipped for greatness in 2004, huh? Not if someone can get hold of this teen nu-Mariah Carey bint and shake some fucking sense into her first.

Covering the White Stripes in Aretha Franklin styleeee? Making a slightly shit thing absolutely unavoidable, mind-numbing dick dribble? Becoming musically and culturally redundant but making sure you sell discs by the vanload? If that’s what passes for ‘potential’ nowadays, it’s about time for us all to check into the mythical big concert hall in the sky.

Luckily, there are still some sane people in the world, and nobody under the age of 40 who works outside middle management will go within 50 feet of buying a record baring the name of Ms Stone anyhow. And so the globe continues to spin and we can all return to normality.

Bollocks. She’s gonna be huge. Sew up your ears.

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

You still would though, wouldn't you.....

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

she's only 16 for gawd's sake but yeah why not... as for the single it's dull but i like her voice

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Little bit harsh I think, singing like Aretha Franklin can't be a bad thing in itself. And describing the White Stripes as "slightly shit" is liking saying Fred Durst is "slightly ugly" or Hitler was "slightly evil".

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

OMG
the white stripes fekking rock, and fell in love with a GIRL sounded feking awesome when sung by jack white. i didn't realise people ripped off songs that were only a few years old.
jeez. her voice is average, but this is NOT the type of song she should be singing. rip off britney songs, they are shit anyhow, so when YOU shittify them, said shit won't bounce off the walls. it'll just kind of blend in with the shit already present.

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Nice objective review. Very fair and open-minded. Yeah, I would.

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

This definitely wasn't the best song from the Soul Sessions, and for a new artist, I thought it was a strong album - don't jump off the deep-end on the anti-cover version trip ;-)

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Look, she's young, she'll learn. It's a pretty fair song, but the voice saves it from being tripe

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

actually i thought it was really good.. that song was in need of a good groove. oh well

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

damn straight! the song still sucks tho and all the radio stations love it, WHY? ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

I first heard this on 6 Music well before the hype started and liked it, in a "well, why not?" sense. Perhaps if it had stayed as an album track...

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

I saw her in Toronto recently. She can sing but so can the contestants of American Idol. What's the point of having a great voice if the songs you're given to perform are ghastly?

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

That review and this thread typify the dismally arsey state of the UK non-mainstream music scene. So what songs should Stone have done, oh wise ones - originals? How many 16yos have got anything original worth saying. Or perhaps there should be an age bar on making records, no-one can have a go til they're say21 and at least have their gap year to sing about?
The girl's got a bit of class and is plainly into what she's doing. As are a few others, the Scala show having sold out qiucker than you can say Britney Houston - £92 and rising for a pair over at ebay, suckers...

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Why the hump? Did she turn you down?

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Nah Andy she didn't turn me down. I'm quite happy with my wife thank you. 16-year old precociously gifted vocalists don't get my pecker up.

Now please people, some rationality. There is nothing wrong at all with singing covers. Some covers are better than the original, some bands take that cover and make it their own. In this case she doesn't and it's dreadful lounge funk, the type of which is dished up aurally by the majority of averagely slick restaurants here in Toronto. When I describe the songs she offers up as ghastly, I am referring to her interpretation of these songs, not that originals. The production lacks soul, sounds very modern in that choked production way and the arrangements are lacking when compared to her voice. The obvious comparison is with Norah Jones, a well-mixed, well-written album that was revolutionary but did what it did very well. In this respect the plaudits going out to Joss are decidedly premature. Until she does then what's the difference between releasing an album like this and what American Idol does? Stone has a wonderful voice, no doubt about that, and I hope she can find a decent songwriter to make the best use of that voice rather than rehashing old tracks.

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

"whats the point in having a great voice if the songs you are given to sing are ghastly"
Fair quote but what is ghastly about any of the songs on the Soul sessions album? (bar the white stripes (this is still great tho) cover, all great late night soul tracks)
Two other points her debut album proper (original material) is yet to be released!
And whats wrong with singing covers? Do you not realise in the late 50's and early 60's every band in the Uk was playin a set of a maximum of about 15 different songs between them!?

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Hmm, but that was 40 years ago...

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Listening to Joss singing demands total focus (some men don't like having their attention completely absorbed by a female voice). 'Fell In Love With A Boy' ain't anything special - but every other track on Soul Sessions is - even 'For The Love Of You', which takes a bit of getting used to but is delightful once one stops thinking. That's what being "Jossified" is all about - letting one's mind "open up" to her - what shall I call it? Unity of mind, emotion, and vocal expression?

Something like that.

The world needs more people like her.

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Jossified?!? I'm guessing it's not a reference ot footballing drama Jossie's Giants... s'funny how the criticism of a female's album gets met with 'Oh, you just can't handle that it's a woman'. 'Unity of mind, emotional and vocal expression' can clearly only be understood if you stop thinking apparently. Is this the new wave of DohSoul, forever only to be enjoyed in a vegetative state?

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Mariah Carey ... Joss Stone ... Karen Matheson.

Is there any hope for me?

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

I don't know. Is there?

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

it makes me fuckin cringe, its a bollocks cover of a bollocks song. and plenty of 16 year old and unders have something worthwhile to say - Daniel Johns at 14 when he wrote frogstomp springs to mind. the fact is conventional pop has lost some of its marketing ability and record companies need a booster, they obviously see this drivel as it, hence the release of the covers before her original material.

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

You have an absoluteley perfect right to be totally wrong, yer Highness....

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Daniel fuckin' Johns?!? Lesson #32 in Debating hereby commences: when trying to win over a crowd, audience or one solitary cat, you will instantaneously be met with roars (or mieows) of insalutary derison if you attempt to use Silverchair as some proof of excellence. Frogstomp is a fucking awful album full of the most tediously 'affected youth' lyrics in the history of acne-scarred grumpydom. And don't use the 'Oh, he was ill, anorexic' card. Being ill doesn't give him added artistic weight.

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

What a load of utter narrow minded bollocks from Mr Adam Anonymous, another predictable load of wankering gobshite from the mouth of a probable emo loving elitist raaaawkster. We played her album at work the other week (yes i do work in a music store) and was later stunned to discover she was a 16-year-old white girl (same as moi). Not everybody can be as cool as you, so what if Joss is flung to the middle class, middle aged members of society - are they not allowed to have good music?

Get off your high horse and stop being so dismissive... just cos something's 'hotly tipped' it doesn't stop it from being good y'know

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Listen to the new Norah Jones record. That's the sort of music Joss should be associated with ie. a decently produced, well crafted album instead of the rather disappointing production featured on Stone's debut. She has got a great voice so the folks behind her album should get the damn instrumentation to back it up.

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Working in a record store doesn't give you an excuse to like shite music, love.

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Ok huge white stripes fan, There my favorite band, yea sure she used fell in like with a girl and changed it to fell in love with a boy and that indeed angers me but if the white stripes aprove cant get that mad over it

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

"you're a dirrdy, dirrdy ma..an, yesyouare"

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

all u-anti stoners: surely music is like art, i mean i would not give Tracy Emin an award let alone shake her hands which seem to be filthy most of the time... music is personal interpretation, captures moments in life etc. All u anti guys *and yeah it does seem to be guys who don't seem to like her stuff/ or unusual choice to push out a debut 'cover' album - maybe you guys are going through shite times in yr life hence yr severe adversity to an artist i would describe as v brave. Dont get me wrong, i liked the release so bought the album. Listened to the first track and was gobsmaked throughout of the mangement's choice of release. Joss is brave as she has a unique voice at such a young age she has a great future ahead of her and in her first promo year she has to get used to being told she's some white version of a female black legend! <sure are big boots to fill in anyone's eyes> GUYS give her a break. Close yr eyes and listen to her voice, it's far more mature than any of yr witty snubs. I mean, I'd rather listen to Joss stone 24hrs a day than 'nufoundfamists' such as Michelle McManus, Alex Parks etc or even old diva's such as Janet Jackson..... By the way. Nora J v Joss Stone. No contest Joss' voice far outways that of a slightly above average singer who happens to have a famous grandfather.....

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

That's precisely the problem there poof. She has this voice and the label immediately says 'Oi you, you're a white chick who sounds black so that's how we're going to develop you and how the production team are going to produce you'. How many stereotypes do you want to use? The management's choice of release was a decided case of bandwagon jumping and the whole album doesn't have the musicality to back up her voice. I agree that vocally she may outdo Norah Jones in technical terms but the whole package is what is on offer and Norah is clearly superior. Great technical vocals don't mean shit if you haven't got the musical backing, the entire vocal career of Louis Armstrong is testament to that. The guy's vocals technically weren't great but they combined character with wonderful music. Joss will be fine one day but she needs to ditch the covers idea and find a good songwriting team.

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

you can almost see her boob in Q.
I felt naught for looking because she's 14.
but that never stopped Marc Ash.

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Hopefully one day Q will have a picture of Louis Armstrong's boob.... just typical though ain't it? Young chick singer, screw the voice, that's have a wee bit of tit showing though. Arseholes.

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

DrFurry: you seem to have a wider than average knowledge of all things musical/ related to it - why don't you write some stuff for her? <this is not meant as a patronising plea>
I did find myself chuckling lightly at the sheer fact that Joss was singing about love/ betrayal/ lost love... all this and she is probably untouched in that way and probably has no experience of the above whatsoever!!!
by the way- this bit goes out to that 'perv who mentioned that Joss was maybe revealing a little more than necessary - JS is actually 16 turning 17 this year. NOT 14.I'm not sure whether that makes it alright to not feel guilty for looking but why dont you find yr cheap thrills elsewhere... try RyanAir.com...

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Me, write? I'd make her sing country n' western gay disco anthems, really use her voice for something fun.

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

I wasn't being pervy.
I was just being silly (although you can almost see boob, honest).
And I know she's 16 going on 17 going on 47.

And I wish I could afford Ryan Air. Until then I'll have to keep scouring the monthlies for a flash of teen boob.

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

look i am a guitar player and a big white stripes fan . i don't have a problem with her covering it, its just that she doesn't give credit to the white stripes who are a muuuuuch better band, i mean what about all those tenns that go onto mtv and see the video they'll go "wow that girl is good." not ever knowing that she ripped-off possibly one of the greatest bands of all time. and on top of all that she didn't even do that good of a job, i've even heard someone say that she did a better version of it. have we all gone mad? the point is that joss stone will never compare to the white stripes.

email or im me my aim screen name is Eddie27549

Re: Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

she does give credit. the credits say "written by jack white".

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

i dont think there's anything wrong wuth singing covers, and i dont especially think the song is a bad song in the first place, in fact (and you can all set upon me like a pack of wild dogs for saying this) i really liked the white stripes version. i hate her voice. i think it's overdone and she's trying too hard and it sounds remarkably like what i imagine the child of britney spears and whitney houston would sound like. and i as i hate them both with a passion, i will not be purchasing any of her records. she's really nothing special, there are more talented people in my high school english class. in fact I, along with a lot of my friends, write our own songs and play our own accompniments, and have very good voices. so why don't we have record deals? is what i want to know.

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

ARGGGHHHH I'm just so sick of anybody with a halfway fucking decent voice getting a record deal!!!! What about people that write ORIGINAL SONGS >:-o fuck this bitch and her annoying cover song on my MTVU!!!!!! It parallels trillville and evanescence in making my ears hurt.

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Fan of the White Stripes, have been long before MTV knew about them. Fell in Love with a Girl isn't a favorite, but it is good stuff. Fell in Love with a Boy? DAMN. That sucks.

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Ok I like the white stripes BIG TIME. joss has a wikid voice, but turning a fantastic song into modern day R'n'B is a crime against nauture. I say that she should perhaps stick to singing original songs, and maybe she'll get better wrap for her voice and music rather than being dumbed down by the fact she did a cover. and the one thing i hate about "adults" is saying that people younger than 21 can't experience love...what would u know anyways.

Joss Stone - Fell In Love With A Boy

Zajebista piosenka, nie wiem dlaczego sie czepiacie, kocham caly ten album a wy pierdolicie od zeczy.boje sie przyszlosci,bo jej glos dopiero sie rozwija, wielkie damy swiata muzyki drzyjcie Joss Stone nadchodzi.Kocham Was i tak :*
