DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

We're toying with the idea of doing a kinda DiS Roadshow, in seaside venues (think open air would be too adventurous, even for us!) this summer and I was wondering if anyone has any weird and wonderful ideas of a) places which are pretty cool to go on holiday to b) have a great little venue which is very under-used and would love to put on some fantastic bands this summer - we'd wanna encourage folks to go to wherever it is for a long weekend of badness too.

Currently on my list of places to investigate further are...

Bournemouth – Mister Smiths / Club X
Brighton – Freebutt / Concorde 2
Hastings – the Crypt
Bridport, Dorset – there’s a new promoter putting shows on there, since harbour lights its very touristy!
Cardiff
Newquay – Walkabout / Various Surf Beach Festivals
Plymouth – Pheonix / C103
Southend - Chimerys
Norwich
Blackpool
Scarborough

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

Only venue in Brighton that is underused is the Pavilion Theartre but I've heard its ridiculously expensive to put on gigs there, hence its underuse. If its not expensive you should go there as its fantastic.

The Freebutt is off course legendary and the Concorde is shit. Concordes even worse on Friday/Saturday as the shows have to be early so it can be a club afterwards.

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

WHAT ABOUT PORTSMOUTH!!!!?!?!?!? if you are doing seaside towns you gotta do Pompey - no doubt!

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

and there are a few nice little venues in portsmouth which could be easily used - the wedgewood rooms being the best, but thats not under-used, but it is cheap and it is awesome. Shite scene down in pompey, all ska-punk and nu-metal played by 15 yr olds, but hey - thats why I moved to......bath. shit. shudda gone to uni in manchester.

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

well the closest sea side to cardiff is barry island, wich is home to the underclass of youth culture we call Scallies. or there's penarth, home to grumpy old pensioners.

the engine rooms and the point however are both in cardiff bay, which is not a sea side, but it is on the side of the sea. the engine rooms is quite a smart little venue actually, i've only been there once (for that average NME brit-pack tour thing) but it's quite nice, sort of reminds me of that club they used to go to in Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

Wedge cheap to hire?!..
Would help if they had a PA that didn't overheat and give up as soon as the headliners approach anything near "loud" (twice in consecutive days t'other week, and it's only a year old!). hohoho.

Now, if there were some good little (ie smaller than the Wedge, 100/200 capacity would be the maximum thats needed) venues here, it'd be another matter. As it is, the only one of its type left now is the Horeseshoe and the landlord - not to mention the security...OHH, the security..! - are proper cunts and have zero interest in helping the promotion of new music there. Even if you're actually doubling the number of punters present & buying drinks there that night for them! He'd rather mis-manage, and patronise and talk down (publicly) to those putting on gigs / the bands themselves (not just the locals either - how's that for a welcome from the landlord when you come to Pompey to play a gig?! Come again soon...!). And he looks like Leo Sayer's uglier little brother, with a thoroughly fucked up attitude.

They've recently started free alternative/experimental-ish gigs in the Fawcet though, which have been deadly; they're free though (have to be, due to the layout of the place I guess) so only local-ish peeps so far, some damn good ones though. Plus Cotton Casino from Acid Mothers Temple which was fun. Bar there though, there really isn't anywhere much, and the scene here badly needs an alternative to the Horseshoe, it went noticeably downhill from the moment he took over as landlord 2/3 summers back. bah.

Others.....don't know if Havana's do gigs anymore.
Frog on the Front......pfffttt!! haha. Air Balloon/Contented Pig are no more. Don't know about the City Bar but get the idea it'd be in use by now were it any good.
Oh for a neat little pub venue somewhere to claim as our own, to put things on. The metallers/ska punkerz can have the Horseshoe, they obviously haven't clocked on, more fools them..
The smelly noel/dadrock gruel-music local bands can do their acoustic setzzz in the Edge of the Wedge, or put on their own nights together next door, and everyone can tap their feet and hope the DJ will play some OCS after, they're self-supporting and are happy in their musical rut...

damn this place sometimes. And when there's such a neat little scene bubbling away now too, in spite of everything...

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

its not crazy expensive to hire i dont think, but you're right in what u say about the rest of pompey. horseshoe is shite, and havana (last i heard) had its ents licence revoked or sum such. i dont kno why portsmouth doesnt do itself more justice in terms of venues actually, goodness u have depressed me now!true what u say about the "indie" bands in pompey, they all ape the sam shite influences and also rate themselves very highly.i thought bath was bad, but at least there is moles here - but again, there is a torrent of average indie schmindie, or nu-metal incubus style crap on show. why th hell do so many bands want to sound like incubus? can someone shed sum light? same goes for oasis.

i need this DiS compilation thats rumoured, to prove me wrong!

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

Norwich is inland but on a river... I don't think that really counts mate!

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

the crypt is a nice small venue, but the only problem is hastings-people.. for example, fierce panda did a gig down here with (x) is greater than (y), winnebago deal and someone else i forget and *literally* TEN PEOPLE turned up.

it would be good to have some decent bands down here though, we get the occasional good band, but otherwise its off to london/brighton.

meh. i dont know. there's a big faux-punk scene down here, and thats about it..

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

Hastings is scary. Very scary. Don't put anything I want to go to on there please.

It really is very very scary.

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

pffft. its not scary. it's kind of nice. just too many kappa-wearing blonde sluts, who chuck their mcdonalds wrappers on the floor instead of moving a metre to put it in the bin.

it's one of those places, so long as you know the score with the people, you'll be fine... like, dont talk to the guy that wears dresses and carries swords around, because he will actually hit you.

i have lived here way too long. *sigh*

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

exmouth pavillions. ;)

it used to be good enough for radio 1.. {and mark morrison, oh..}

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

aberystwyth. very seasidey, and possibly the most scary, decrepit, magnificent, and morose place in the whole world. i really can't work out if i hate it or love it. better leave it til the end of the summer (i.e. September) cos if there's no students, there'll be no audience!!

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

Please do something in Plymouth!
I'm from there and no bands ever come down, you have to travel all the way to exeter to see someone and that's 50 miles away!
Don't like the pheonix too much though as its down Union street and i don't like the idea of getting beaten up too much by swilly.

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

Aberystwyth! It is gorgeous (and morose, etc, as above), and there are several pubs and clubs that can put bands on. It is also a wee bit isolated (like Camber Sands), so people need to make a special effort to go there - both a plus and a minus, if you get me...

Incidentally, I do agree with crosbysleftear - please DON'T do anything in Hastings. Eastbourne and Worthing and the other towns around are great, but, but...see Hastings and die!

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

See. Hastings is skahheadville.

Worthings shite as well but thats mainly because everytime I go there it rains. Maybe it always rains in Worthing or maybe its just me.

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

it isnt. st leonards is. hastings isnt. different places.

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

Yes damnit! Come to Dorset... our county is literally starved of quality live music, and having DiS turn up would just about make my summer!

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

Come to Frinton, pleeeeeeeeease

or, Newquay, from fri 16th july to tues 20/21 st july, as thats when i go with my mates, you would gain so much kudos if you did

cleethorpes?CLEETHORPES??

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

Frinton is a no go realisticly, even Clacton would be a struggle with no real music venue (the best being The Roaring Donkey.. now THAT is scary)

Did you ever come to any of the Colchester shows?

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

Well, erm, I did used to live in Weymouth down in Dorset, so it isn't unlikely to hit down that way...

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

Margate always springs to mind as being a traditionally seaside-y place and East Kent needs more music... (quickly drawing a veil over the fact that it is a total pikey chavhole).
There's the Winter Gardens which seems to be hideously under-used - I've never been, but I'm informed it's moderately big venue - MSP and the suchlike played there in the mid 90s, now it plays host to B-list pop acts. Failing that, there's the Britannia over the road, where bands will occasionally book to play, then cancel when they realise no-one will turn up.

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

If you play at C103(or more commonly known as its old name JFK- the acronym standing for Just For Kids- but its still a good night out), you are like to get more people coming than the Phoenix which is tiny!

Re: DiS Beside the Seaside Roadshow Idea...

nothing to do with the venure or anything.
but would the bands that you put on be all local bands, so a completely different line up for each place?
or would you have maybe 2 or 3 relatively well known bands (but still small bands) to do maybe two or three headlining gigs each, then have local bands as support?
