Lord, how I dislike this band. Remember when they emerged? Spazzy haircuts and some Incubus riffs. Well, fuck me if that isn't a recipe for success. Shit.... it is? Jesus. I'll get my coat.

And yet... what's happened here? Over two years they grew more and more dislikeable while, confusingly, amassing more fans... with every passing day they cluttered more and more 'alt' tv channels, and generally refused (quite unreasonably, I thought) to go away. Then they caused a bit of a stink by cancelling their much-awaited Reading Festival appearance to work on the second album. And while we were all quick to extract the Michael out of them for such (spit) corporate behaviour, it seems we may have jumped the gun a little - those hours in the recording studio have paid off.

This album isn't a grower. It's not an "ooh... well, there's one or two decent songs on it", grudgingly likeable apology for the first record. It's a really really really really really REALLY great pop-metal explosion. If you don't like it almost instantly, you'll probably never get it.

At first look, not a lot's changed. They still have spazzy haircuts and Incubus riffs. But some metamorphosis has taken place here. 'Start Something' seethes and grins with "toldja so" confidence. Slick in all the right places, those riffs don't sound like the stilted, borrowed nu-metal shreds of yesteryear - they've evolved into ruddy great monsters and have taken to bashing you repeatedly around the ears until you give in and let them sink into your brain. The snippets of caterwauling whose only chorus-like characteristics were their incessant repetition throughout each song have been replaced by anthemic sunbursts of harmonic melody and delicious guitar solos. And Ian Watkins, previously renowned for his metal-as-fuck squeak, has learned to sing!

First single 'Burn Burn' is a good example - the catchiest hook this side of Linkin Park, segueing into the much-discussed Adamski rip-off verse (fact: such unashamed plagiarism is absolutely justified when the resulting song is this awesome) and a surging chorus that will, and almost certainly did, have you punching the air and jumping around your room. Standout track 'Last Summer', a bittersweet, punchy number bursting with all-too-short youth and nostalgia, has one of the most gorgeous, glowing choruses imaginable, backed up by pulsing rhythms and call-and-response vocals - the only thing missing is a flurry of gleeful handclaps. Elsewhere they take a leaf out of Funeral For A Friend's book and tap into the zeitgeist of the emo/hardcore scenes, wrapping dual vocals and screamed choruses around a heavier guitar sound than their first album dared to explore. (The purists who'll no doubt resent them for nicking some of the best musical bits of this scene will undoubtedly deride Lostprophets as popcore charlatans, but such miserable grumbling should obviously be ignored.)

The irony of Lostprophets' emergence was that the cooler they tried to be, the less credible they were. Indeed, the band themselves are reputedly very quick to disown their first record (reports suggest they consider this their first proper record, which may explain the title). Yet the enormous fanbase they gathered in that time seems to have spurred them onto better things. With Start Something they've gained the confidence to inject some personality into their sound and claim it rightfully as their own. Playing to their strengths at last, they've taken the lustre of their energetic live shows and injected into their second record with an enthusiasm that shines out of every song. No longer needing to concentrate so hard on posing and posturing, it seems they've learned to relax and enjoy themselves. The result is an upbeat, defiant and utterly brilliant pop record.

Lostprophets - Start Something

I look forward to hearing it, nice review too!
Burn Burn was one of the best rock singles of last year.

I completely agree that Lostprophets have become much cooler now that they no longer care about what people think of them. Their cover of Cry Me A River, for example, was quality.

Lostprophets - Start Something

cheers :)

i was slightly disappointed by the cry me a river cover actually! i only heard it recently, after being told repeatedly how great it was... thought it needed much heavier riffs really. never mind though!

Lostprophets - Start Something

Well i have heard the album and was not very impressed at all. From "Burn Burn's" chorus nicked straight from Seal's, Kiss From A Rose (somewhat ashamed I spotted this) , the rest of the album just doesn't pick up from there. I realise that albums don't have to be original to be considered good, but Ian's constant crooning through every track really makes this an annoying listen.

I think its a shame that they dislike their first release, I thought it showed great promise. The first version released on Visible Noise (without the added scratchy scratchy effects) was without a doubt a great album and always will be. I think Mr Watkins and co have been listening to too many american pop-punk bands and obviously one other welsh effort and think that because the kids like that at the moment it seems a good direction to go in. Regardless to what I think the album will sell shitloads but quantity is no measure of quality.

Re: Lostprophets - Start Something

Errr, it isn't Kiss from a Rose it's 'Killer' by Adamski, sung by Seal, as the review quite rightly says. But yeh I don't really like them either. Better than bloody Bizkit and Park mind!

Re: Lostprophets - Start Something

ah im glad my Seal knowledge isnt as good as I thought :), Yeah I wouldnt say they are in any way close to Freds shiteness, I just find them quite disapointing now, when they used to be quite interesting

Lostprophets - Start Something

I'd written this before I read the review posted on the site, but what the hell, here it is anyway....

LOSTPROPHETS

‘Start Something’

LOSTPROPHETS, second album, big budget production, fake sound of progress? That would be unfair, although that doesn’t seem to be stopping hints of the typical ‘build ‘em up, knock ‘em down’ nature of the UK music press from surfacing already. Fortunately the music is good enough to stand up on its own merits.

All the elements that combined to bring ‘fakesoundofprogress’ to attention are still here. Any concerns that the big budget production might smooth out all the edges too much can be disregarded. Yes, current single ‘Last Train Home’ is among the most ‘commercial’ sounding songs that band have written to date, but when album opener ‘We Still Kill The Old Way’ tears out of your speakers any feelings that the band may have somehow had their sound diluted will be quickly put aside. Same with second song ‘Ride’. Another riff turns in and outside itself starting the song with Ian Watkins doing his best Mike Patton impersonation to date and Jamie Oliver screaming for all his life’s worth! The sound is MASSIVE. The FAITH NO MORE comparison doesn’t end there either. Oliver’s shift from decks to keyboards fills the sound out in much the same way that Roddy Bottum did for FNM. These are two MONSTER tunes to open with, followed by the now familiar ‘Last Train Home’. Opening atmospheric intro to ‘’Make A Move’ bizarrely calls to mind classic FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM before Watkins chips in again and ‘I Don’t Know’, although familiar in style to songs from the debut, is notable for it’s guitar solo at the end. Enough to silence those who complain about the quality of musicianship in modern rock bands.

The songs are all linked by samples, used to greater effect than on the debut, particularly where first single ‘Burn Burn’ is concerned. In the context of the album this just sounds even more devastating. There are just so many highlights. ‘Tonight’ is another commercial sounding song, but non-the worse for it. Brilliant harmony vocals, though it’s not clear whether they come from Watkins himself or a combination of him and Jamie Oliver. Elsewhere however Jamie’s trademark scream continues to be well in evidence and used to contrast with Watkins ‘Pattonisms’ to great effect such as on title track ‘Start Something’, another massive tune. Drummer Mike Chiplin is awesome throughout but on this his kick drum use betrays his thrash metal roots, while Oliver comes on like Phil Anselmo, growling in the background. The song’s mellow outro goes to display the increased thought that’s gone into the song-writing and production process as does the string section added to ‘A Million Miles’. Award for Song Title of the Week (possibly the year) goes to…’We Are Godzilla, You Are Japan’, more out and out thrash metal that ends in one of the most frantic bursts you’ll ever hear, Jamie screaming “Let’s go the only way we know. Psyching you out”.

Essentially ‘Start Something’ is FNM’s ‘The Real Thing’ for the post ‘Nu’ generation, without Patton’s bullshit and the permanent possibility of internal combustion! These guys actually LIKE each other! Of course, that album came out at the peak of ‘cock rock’, so to an extent in these modern genre hopping/mixing times the impact of an album like ‘Start Something’ is greatly reduced. That’s a shame, because LOSTPROPHETS have come up with an album strong enough to take on the world and stomp Godzilla-like over the opposition. Along with THE DARKNESS these 6 lads look set to take America by storm this year. Whether they are given the reception they deserve on their return or a typically British rejection of success remains to be seen. In the meantime, there’s a UK tour to look forward to.

It’s only February and LOSTPROPHETS have just raised the bar. ‘Start Something’ is awesome.

Re: Lostprophets - Start Something

my vitriol?!

otherwise though - absolutely. like i said, they make few claims to originality - but that doesn't stop it from being an intensely enjoyable record. i wrote the review having had a pretty long time to listen to the record and get to know it [as opposed to a quick 'ergh, what have we got in the post today?' scenario], and in that time i've only grown to like it more, despite my previous hatred for them.

hats off to em as far as i'm concerned.

Re: Lostprophets - Start Something

I agree. Its a good laugh, especially if you're 14 and haven't heard all those other records. I mean that in a good way. However 'Last summer' is one of the worst songs on the album though. I like the way they flowed the songs into each other like on Finelines. Some of the guitar effects remind me of them too. I can't beleive how much they sound like Mansun sometimes though. Maybe i'm deaf.
Some of these are gonna be total coincidences, but didn't they co-write the record with someone?

Re: Lostprophets - Start Something

the Mansun thing... SO true!

Lostprophets - Start Something

Yes, this album is quite glorious.
Maybe people can go back to bigging up the lost prophets instead of the constant barrage of loving FFAF(really not a fan, I've tried damnit!)

Lostprophets - Start Something

Mr. Ward i can assume you only say "Patton's bullshit" because of the wank rip-off acts that his brilliance has spawned. or because you are in fact tone-deaf.

Lostprophets - Start Something

mesa likey

Lostprophets - Start Something

Fill me in here gg, but where exactly did you find the track 'lucky you'? there certainly isn't one on start something. (perhaps you were thinlking of the deftones track of the same name?)

Re: Lostprophets - Start Something

Something not shit would have been nice. What planet are you people on? This album is fucking gash.
