Birmingham always seems to be overlooked when it comes to music. Truth is, we have some really great bands coming through at the moment.

My favourites are...

MURDOCH
SNOWFIELD
MY DAD HITLA
SILVERSUIT

If anyone has anything to say on these bands or others in Birmingham then get it down in this thread

Re: Birmingham bands

I'm interested in hearing some snowfield. Murdoch bore the pants off me- sub-Supergrass-ness. Are Oddome from B'ham? I really really want to hear some of their stuff.

Yellobelly (www.yellobelly.tk) are immense- sort of EITS/Maserati/Mono noise bursts. Einstellung (Neu meets Acid Mother's Temple), Grover (solid post-rock), Clynder:sound (more post rock) are also worth checking out.

Re: Birmingham bands

Will To Rally are fantastically good, they play at the jug of ale a fair bit and really are quite brilliant, quite new to the scene though.

Tian Tian have only played two gigs, the last just after christmas but they blew me away- and the girls were gorgeous :/

Silversuit however make me want to peel my own face off.

I'll pass your comment on to Silversuit. What was it again, 'Silversuit however make me want to peel my own face off'. Class. I'll suggest they maybe use it as a review/promotional line. The boys will laugh at that.

Seriously though Claire, get over it, can't you take rejection? You know what I mean. If he didn't like you, he didn't like you!!

Sad really when someone gets turned down they have to result in slagging them and their band off instead of just accepting defeat.

Anyone that may like Silversuit, I found this:

Just a fan,
Cheers

i agree with her though

silversuit are shit

Re: Birmingham bands

Yellobelly are beautiful, I agree.

Re: Birmingham bands

Mr. Nobody are genius although I think they are from Sutton Coldfield. Is that still Brum?

Re: Birmingham bands

close enough :D

Re: Birmingham bands

I had to flee after a few songs from Mr Nobody, I'm afraid - they were a bit of a room-clearer the time I saw 'em. I really like Court Jester, The Programme and Harpies (I guess they're pretty well-known now, anyway).

Re: Birmingham bands

I'll be in Birmingham for the next few weeks so now the subject has come up, what bands would you recommend i go see?

Re: Birmingham bands

My Dad Hitla (Once known as Holster) are playing tommorrow night (Friday 14th) at the Jug of Ale in Moseley. They have really stepped it up a gear at the last few gigs they've played. If you're around then go see 'em!

Who mentioned The Program? They're shit! Really Shit!

Re: Birmingham bands

I forgot to mention others I like.

Chester road and Snowfield.

Mr. Nobody cleared the room? The first time I saw them was at the Flapper & Firkin Xmas all dayer and I have seen them 3 times since they seem to pull loads of people.

Oh Distophia are cool also.

Re: Birmingham bands

distophia are ace.

also check out Dragonflies Draw Flame who are from down that way. theyre somewhere between Idlewild and Mogwai, for want of a better description.

Re: Birmingham bands

*Correction*

Distophia are alright.

Saw them support Seafood. They were alright. Decent hooks - too much sub-Sonics wibbling (which they are not that good at btw) and the non-beardy guitarist is a bit of a tosser. Like i said, alright.

Re: Birmingham bands

you've just described all that is great about the 'toph. but i *double correct* back atcha, no changes.

Re: Birmingham bands

Looks like I was at the same gig as you, then. Yet also at a different gig, it would seem... :)

Re: Birmingham bands

Please do pass it onto the band if you so desire.

I apologise for expressing an opinion about music on a music message board... I really must refrain from doing that in future. bad claire! *smacks wrists*

Fortunately, I don't know any of the existing bandmembers, but carry on making up stories if you wish :)

Re: Birmingham bands

And a very mature and cultured comment it was Claire!! *Ahem*

Denial is a terrible thing.

Also, "I don't know any of the EXISTING bandmembers".
There's no hard feelings from either past or present band members over what went on, so I believe. So get over it, they have.

Re: Birmingham bands

Yes I think so, rather insightful of me I believe.

I think you need to calm down a tad dear, I made one comment about one band and you've taken it upon yourself to blow it out of proportion. Whatever floats your boat I guess.

Also, my comment about existing band members is no reflection on my opinion of them personally or what went on, not that I even know what went on or am in the slightest bit interested. Not that it's really anything to do with it but I am not in contact with any people related to the band My original comment was simply aimed at their music. I'm sorry you took it so personally.

Re: Birmingham bands

"Calm down dear, it's just a commercial"

Class, didnt take much did it!!

Re: Birmingham bands

Souvaris are the best band ive seen from Birmingham, and infact the best set ive ever seen from an unsigned band (supporting Explosions in the Sky)

Re: Birmingham bands

brum is born
brum is bread
fvat in the bottom

n im proud of it

Re: Birmingham bands

But they're not from Birmingham, they were touring with EITS. They're from Hertfordshire, I believe.

Re: Birmingham bands

Well,

Actually 1 of em is from Hereford, one is from Nottingham and 2 are from Coventry ( I should know, I work with Dan the guitarist...in Coventry, hehe)

Anyway, they are darn good !

Re: Birmingham bands

Got round to seeing Yellowbelly on Brum the other week. Pretty darn good !!

Re: Birmingham bands

Re: Birmingham bands

No one's mentioned Misty's Big Adventure yet

not just the best band from Birmingham, but probably one of the best bands in the country.

Oh and Grandscope are pretty promising too.

Re: Birmingham bands

Ahh yes, Misty's Big Adventure. Somehow I always forget about them, but they are wonderful.

Re: Birmingham bands

I've never seen Mistys big adventure. What do they sound like and what venues do they play?

A night at subway central is in order tonight i thinks

Klopeks

All good stuff.

Re: Birmingham bands

'Neon Twang' - Their show at The Actress and Bishop last night was fucking amazing. Watch this space.

Re: Birmingham bands

Misty's sound like a roomful of Casios going insane and enjoying it.

Re: Birmingham bands

I saw Neontwang the other night. Very good.

Re: Birmingham bands

Mr Nobody are amazing but I don't think they like beening classed as a Birmingham band. They are from Lichfield.

35Seconds haven't been mentioned yet.. They are very much a must see. Brilliant!!!

Augustine. I've only heard them on CD. They have got some very nice songs.

Clyndersound pretty new on the Birmingham scene. Post Rock with no Bass or vocals.

Re: Birmingham bands

35 seconds are the best unsigned band in Birmingham. Mr nobody, i love from the cd but ive not heard enough compared to LUkeN.

35 seconds should be fucking signed by now its a joke. They aren't! What are you doing labels!
Get the cd from their site and make your own mind up, sorry guys for sounding like some kind of Promoting robot, but its good enough for me to sound like a tit so...
www.35seconds.co.uk

Re: Birmingham bands

It's a bit short notice but I just found out that Tian Tian are playing tonight at the Flapper and Firkin in Brum. They're definitely worth checking out, the girls are really hot (don't let this be your motive..) and they play amazing music. I'd advise you kids to go.

Re: Birmingham bands

Birmingham techno fucking rips. Surgeon, Regis, etc.

Re: Birmingham bands

Did anyone go to the 'secret'/warm-up Dogs Die In Hot Cars gig at The Jug, Moseley, Birmingham last night?

Re: Birmingham bands

After talking to someone in the industry they described the birmingham scene as "on its knees". Its true, the place is desperate to have a band rise up to the likes of its past. From what people have said the better bands appear to avoid playing the place. Ive seen a fair few bands play birmingham and the only one worth getting excited about is Chester Road. Im not much for snowfield or my dad hitla (they were better when they went under the name of holster). On a different note the jug of ale is an ace venue but would be even better if aurthur gave some different bands a break from time to time instead of the usual circle he chooses to put on. I personally try to stay away from the birmingham scene as much as i can, far too bitchy for my liking compared to other scenes in the country!

Re: Birmingham bands

"After talking to someone in the industry they described the birmingham scene as "on its knees" - And that one person speaks for the whole industry do they?

"From what people have said the better bands appear to avoid playing the place" - What 'better' bands? Signed or Unsigned? If you mean signed don't you ever look at the Brum venue's gig lists?! But if you mean unsigned, which bands are these exactly?

"Ive seen a fair few bands play birmingham and the only one worth getting excited about is Chester Road." - What's your user name? Isn't there an Oli in Chester Road?!

"if aurthur gave some different bands a break from time to time instead of the usual circle he chooses to put on." - Promoters have their favourites, why get bitter it's just a fact of life.

"I personally try to stay away from the birmingham scene as much as i can." - Good, keep away!!

"far too bitchy for my liking compared to other scenes in the country!" - How old are you? It's takes a fair few years to really get a feel for a city's 'scene'. And sadly some people never understand or a get a feel for it. How many city's have you lived in then, to be able to make such a sweeping statement?!

It might pay to re-read your message before you send it. At least try and make it make sense and not be full of contradictions!!

Bye x

Re: Birmingham bands

Wow i was only stating my opinion. If this doesnt encourage bitchyness i dont know what does. Contrary to popular belif more than one person in the world has the name oli. And they are the best band in brum INMYOPINION. Sorry if it hurts x.

Re: Birmingham bands

Nobody has mentioned

Copter - www.coptercentral.com
Trash Fashion - www.trash-fashion.com (if it's working)
The Big Bang

Re: Birmingham bands

Bimringham would love to have a band make it, anyone would. I reckon Editors, Silversuit or Murdoch could do it but the rest I ain't sure of.

I do love the jug though!

Re: Birmingham bands

Snowfield were alright. My Dad Hitla weren't that inspiring.

However Pram and MBA are from Brum!

still a poor man's Coventry tho :p

Re: Birmingham bands

OLILEFT - Well done for clearing up your contradictions though. Thanks.

John_Brainlove - 'Copter', yeah pretty good. As are 'The Big Bang.' But 'Trash Fashion', come on you're having a laugh, or they are, but apparantly they aren't!! Seriously though, they are terrible!!

Re: Birmingham bands

My contradictions?? More like why arent i defending myself from your over reaction. Dicks like you are exactly the reason i'm staying out of brum!

Re: Birmingham bands

Bye. Send us a postcard!!

Re: Birmingham bands

ha ha. er...yeh.

Re: Birmingham bands

havn't been here for ages- ive been on holiday!
all of you should stop messing about. clynder sound are the best band going in brum but nobody pays attention cos theyr instrumental. they are really powerful and intense.
i heard about the gig on the 2nd and i really like what ive heard from the other 2 bands. but i cant go cos its my moms birthday meal.
im gonna cry

Re: Birmingham bands

Yeah at the Flapper & Firkin in Birmingham tomorrow, will be good. Cylinder:Sound are marvelous as are Mr Nobody and 35 Seconds, great line up! Almost as good as The Dears and Silversuit at the Jug of Ale next week.

Re: Birmingham bands

trash fashion are great. i like bands that dress up and put on a show instead of standing around expecting me to be impressed by leather jackets, crap hair, ripped jeans and a few power chords. Trash Fashion do costumes, humour, dancing, shameless crapness, antique instruments, fashion crimes, 80's sex pop and obvious brilliance.

true, all the songs are too long by about half, but they have to fit all those keyboard guitar solos in somehow...

http://www.trash-fashion.com

Re: Birmingham bands

Something... I don't know what.... but it's blindingly obvious.... makes me think you're in that band John_Brainlove

True, the spectacle is an experience, the costumes, the shoe, just a pity they're music isn't very good

Re: Birmingham bands

What's wrong with wearing those things (leather jackets, ripped jeans) if that's the fashion you like and that's what you choose? It's better than dressing someone up into something they don't normally wear! Yes, you know what I'm getting at (being in the band and all), Trash Fashions drummer is a Kev and the rest of the band dress him up....how fucking sad!

And if that guitarist of theirs, 'mini kid rock', lol, spent less time looking at himself in the many mirrors in his bedroom (I have it on very good authority!) or doing press-ups on dates (yes you heard correctly), and more time practising, they might be a better band....but I doubt it!

Re: Birmingham bands

stop being a bitch and let em get on with it!

Re: Birmingham bands

In the same vein as you bad mouthing Birmingham?! Why don't YOU shut the fuck up and let US all get on with it?!?!

Re: Birmingham bands

I'm not in Trash Fashion. Do you have to be in a band to like them now? You people are starting to get on my nerves.

Re: Birmingham bands

No you don't at all John_Brainlove, I just couldn't comprehend anyone actually liking such shit........

Re: Birmingham bands

Well try harder to comprehend it "Coxon".

They make an effort. They are different to most bands. Most bands, from Birmingham or elsewhere, bore me - because they all sound the same and they all look the same. They all play guitars and they all wear jeans and t-shirts and they all screw up their little faces when they sing because they all mean it soooo much.

I look for something different, musically, visually, stylistically, whatever. And Trash Fashion are definitely different.

Re: Birmingham bands

Shut up dingle!

Re: Birmingham bands

Anyone seen a green eyed monster in a silversuit????
"just a fan".....my arse! Biggin up your own band and pretending to be a fan....now thats really fuckin sad!!

Trash Fashion gig in London regularly, have played in Estonia, rocked the custard factory on mor
