OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

That's one for ageing punkrockers, and nil for media regulators. Go on, mark it up...

John Lydon's four-letter outburst during his stint on I'm A Celebrity... um... that needs money... um... in the jungle, or whatever (DiS's short-term memory is shot to buggery), has been deemed okay by media regulator OfCom.

Lydon, not known for minding his Ps and Qs, was heard to remark "f*ck" and "c*nt" on live television, before the 9pm watershed. Broadcasters ITV will receive no punishment, despite OfCom receiving a whopping 88 complaints. 88 eh? Wow.

ITV got out of jail free because they'd publicised that the show was live and apologised immediately after the incident. A statement from OfCom said pretty much what I've just said, but with fancier words.

Go on Deeley, I dare you...

OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

WayHay!

Fuck you Mary Whitehouse, put that in your cunt and smoke it!

PC Brigade: Your boys were well and truly beaten!

Re: OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

its got fuck all to do with political correctness

Re: OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

Arite then, for PC brigade read Prudish brigade, that sounds better.

Is it not politically incorrect to say "cunt" on the telly? I'm confused now, help...

Re: OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

actually, i guess women find it more offensive than men, so its unPC, but that aside its a fairly egalitarian insult. noone likes being called one

Re: OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

In all seriousness, the offending word is my favourite in the English language. It is also best said in a Yorkshire accent, loudly. A chapter in my novel that I'm currently struggling to write is about the word "cunt" amongst other such profanities, it needs re-writing though cos I don't think it's funny enough. It's so fookin' hard to be funny and literary at the same time, few achieve it.

Anyway where was I, oh yeh "Cunt",

I like the Libertines song 'Wot a Waster':

"Who are you bleeding anyway you two bob cunt?"

"two bob cunt" is probably the best phrase I can think of in the English Language. I like being all esoteric and abbreviataing it to 'TBC', call somebody a TBC and you're insulting them without them knowing.

Personally, the only words I am particularly offended by are racist ones (except for in the hip-hop context) and, top of the list, disablist terms such as 'Spaz', 'flid' etc.

I don't really mind racist and disablist terms when they are said without malice though, my mates call me 'spastic' and stuff as a mark of satire, I think that's pretty cool. But if someone I didn't know used those words in the wrong context, or even worse, called me one, they'd get sparked no danger.

On the subject of racist and disablist words, isn't it funny how most people view racist words as being more offensive and malignant than disablist words? People will say 'Spaz', 'Flid', 'cripple', 'Mong' etc and think that's ok but would refrain from saying racist words. I think this is stupid as racist words only relate to appearance/ethnicity whereas disablist words relate to a person's genuine problem/impediment. When I was at school a black kid made fun of the way I walked, nobody thought anything particularly bad about it, but if I turned round and called him a racist name (I didn't though, I thankfully aint like that) I'd have been the one in trouble, not him. I might have even been excluded.

Take the notion, for example, of a disabled kid and a black kid both getting disablist/racist bullied at their school. A black kid has to deal with the bullying alone, but the disabled kid has to deal with the bullying on top of and AS WELL AS actual physical/social/emotional side of having a disability. Yet the racism is popularly considered to be the worse of the two. Absurd!

I'm going off topic here, back on to music:

Ian Dury the disabled singer did a song called 'Spasticus Autisticus' in the 80s. And the sanctimonious shits at Radio 1 banned it for being offensive to disabled people, without actually asking disabled people if they were offended by it. As a person with Cerbral Palsy (where the term 'spastic' derrives from I have no problem with song. In fact I think it's genius, cos it shows up the PC Brigade for the nobheads that they are. I doubt there's a person with Cerbral Palsy out there who, knowing that Ian Dury is disabled, would be offended by it.

Anyways, rant over. I'd love this to provoke some interesting thought/discussion but I sincerely doubt anyone will read this anyway, nobody ever does read my better posts on here...

Re: OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

whoah
ranticle

on cunt though: its physiological so far superior to most words
think about what your mouth is doing as you say it:
K
harshly forces air into your mouth
UHN
stretchs tissue laterallyt, allowing space for air to fill
and
T
forcibly expels air

its like chewing something and spitting it out set to a word.

and women really don't like it, to generalise

Re: OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

Yeah, I could eulogise the phonetics of 'cunt' all day long... Bliss!

Re: OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

some women love it when you tell them how much you love their sweet cunt though

so I hear

Re: OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

only dirty women

in a good way

im told

Re: OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

it should be no more offensive than calling someone a 'dick' or a 'penis'.
although phonetically those wors arent as pleasant to say as 'cunt'
example:
'oi you cunt come over here'
'oi you penis come over here'

i would defer use the first phrase rather than the second.
as for the disabled insults thing. i think that racist insults are much lower than disabled insults (but thats not to say disabled insults are alright, especially if they are really personal and from someone you dislike).
if you insult someone for being coloured, then you are assuming that you are superior to them simply because you are a different colour.
although disabled insults are much worse for the person being insulted, so in theory the insulter should get a worse punishment. some racism is alright and some disabled insults are alright, but only in the right context. such as if the person being insulted doesnt mind being insulted.
its all a bit silly really... and im sure my post makes little sense.

Re: OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

Nah mate, makes sense to me

What about gingerism though?

Re: OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

Also, another point:

Isn't it interesting how it's acceptable to abuse somebody for being ginger but not for being black/mixed race. Afterall, like a person's blackness, a person's gingerness also relates to their ethnicity (the Celts were once a race too you know, they used to run this country before the Romans/Saxons/Normans/Vikings etc).

I quite like that idea of being in a country solely populated by gingers, ginger women can often be very good looking, whereas ginger men are mainly mingers. Therefore, as a good looking ginger man, I'd get to share the monopoly on fit birds with the likes of Prince Harry, David Caruso, Tommy Harris from Corrie etc.

I bagsy Nicole Kidman!...

OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

is it someones job to sit and watch the tv 12 hour shifts, to make sure live programmes aren't being offensive?
if cat deely sweared all the little kids (ok the few little kids, mostly the students) would go around using the word all day, in front of their parents (well not the students obviously.) so ther would probly more complaints. would be an intersting experiment to see who got more complaints.

OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

Doesn't the word Cunt cause a stir? Goodness!

Give it time and it'll become as second nature as Shit and Fuck...

We'll become immune - we're very adaptable creatures... :o)

OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

I remember seeing a description of Mary Whitehouse that caled her "a purple-haired, interefering old shit bucket". Spot on, or what?

Cheerio,

Ian

OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

He just said it to make more money. He is a sell out.

Re: OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

How did he make more money?! He simply said it because he swears all the time and not-swearing would be second nature. I don't think he said it deliberately to cause a reaction, it's just how he speaks!

OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

Cunt's a term of endearment where I live. People really aren't offended by anything around here. Interestingly, if someone's stupid or being a dick they get called 'Jew' or 'Jewish'. Oh well.

OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

And where do you live?

Berlin?

OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

What a flexilbe expletive. Soft Cunt, daft Cunt, silly Cunt and my all time favourite plural, a bunch of cunts!!!!

OfCom: 'C*nt' is fine by us...

What a silly thread, you terrible cunts.
