i've been listening to a lot of sonic youth this week. it's because they're amazing.
i've narrowed down my favourites to:
sunday - a thousand leaves (because macaulay culkin looks HOT in the video, and the song is just great)
the burning spear - sonic youth (because i like the noisy bits and the bass and the thurston singing)
total trash - daydream nation (because it sounds really poppy at first then thurston starts screaming and its awesome).
dirty boots - goo (because it's literally the best opening song to any album ever)
my friend goo - goo (because i love it when kim and thurston say "hey goo, what's new?")
unmade bed - sonic nurse (it makes me feel really nice and sleepy and mmmmm...)
um...YAY SONIC YOUTH.
Tunic (Song for Karen)
Hotwire My Heart
Cotton Crown
Swimsuit Issue
(whisper it) I only like 4 sonic youth albums
Um, YAY!
I know it's obvious but Teenage Riot is superb.
Brother James form Kill Yr Idols is a personal highlight, so is Stereo Sanctity from Sister.
Sister is faultless as an album
as is Goo.
There I said it. I can't get Evol or Kill Yr Idols
Can we count Dirty Boots?
dirty boots is one of mine.
i dont like sister as much as goo.
i think washing machine is underrated though.
Washing machine is
fantastic.
1000 leaves is underrated.
teenage riot is ace
but i think i've listened to it too much, because now it doesnt sound as ace as it did when i first heard it :(
The
Diamond Sea.
they always let me down live
that always made me sad - I even sat down at one of their gigs
Reading 95/96
when they finished with the Diamond Sea and strobe lights will never be beaten.
They let me down a bit at Brixton
I wonder how long it'll be till ATP gets them to do Daydream in it's entriety (actually I'd prefer Goo, but..yeah)
.
Teenage Riot. I think it would actually be my number 1 song of all time.
Eric's Trip - I absolutely love the vocals on it. Especially the way he sings 'She thinks she's a godiss.'
Who does sing that? Is it the drummer?
I think
Eric Trip is a Lee Ranaldo song, he's one of the guitarists.
My favourites:
Sunday
Wish Fulfillment
I Love You Golden Blue
Hey Joni
Teenage Riot
well..
silver rocket (i've been slightly addicted to watching the video of this on youtube thurston's guitar screaming as he slams it head first into the ground being the highlight)
dirty boots
incinerate
Total Trash
Youth Against Facism
Diamond Sea
Peace Attack
The Empty Page
Free City Rhymes
Schizophrenia
There are far too many:
'Cross the Breeze
Orange Rolls, Angels Spit
Skip Tracer
Karen Koltrane
Star Power
Pacific Coast Highway
Titanium Expose
Trilogy
etc.
Teenage Riot...
...is easily one of the greatest, forward-thinking pop songs ever written. '100%' is also close to that status, I'd say.
'Tunic (Song For Karen)' and 'Wish Fulfillment' do it for me, as well.
total trash is one of mine too!
tunic (song for karen)
silver rocket
kool thing
100%
drunken butterfly
god theres loads more actually. i'm also really loving Do You Believe I Rapture from rather ripped.
arg
have to add Mote to that list.
100%
definitely
so difficult
but I'd say
Wish Fulfillment, which is amazingly emotional and also just great- as is Swimsuit Issue.
Sprawl, Candle, The Empty Page, Diamond Sea, Sugar Kane and Kool Thing I think would be the others.
And I'm also enjoying Rather Ripped a huge amount at the moment.
Sunday is my favourite
Everything about it is perfect.
she
is not alone.
Death Valley 69
Brave Men Run
Brother James
Self Obsessed and Sexxee
Really great song- I reckon Sonic Youth are one of those bads where you kinda fall in love with the first album you hear by them- Self Obsessed is from Experimental Jet Set Trash and No Star- although shouldn't overlook the live takes on "The Year Punk Broke"- now that's life changing- love Thurston Moore out-takes on that!
i'm going to fopp to buy sonic yout albums
from their £5 second on my lunchbreak now...
good plan.
i was going to do that ages ago, but then decided to just download them all, and get the albums on vinyl.
fopp in sheffield
has put them all up to 7 quid. BOO!
ooh
"Catholic Block"
"Silver Rocket"
"Teen Age Riot"
"Expressway To Yr. Skull"
"Karen Koltrane"
"Dirty Boots"
"Youth Against Fascism"
"Kill Yr. Idols"
this is HAAAAAAARD.
do Ciccone Youth count?
cause, liek, "MacBeth" and everything.
yup
I'd say do count- it's when you stray off into obscure splinter groups like Lee Ronaldo's "Text of Light" project then it doesn't count...
Also, hard to access songs sometimes with Sonic Youth- because really think the "feel" of an album such as Evol has this great consistency which makes it something special in itself- rather than individual songs.
yeah
i couldnt pick a certain song from evol, its such a good album, its more like one giant long awesome song.
best ciccone youth song = hi! everybody
screw you
the daily favourite song threads is/are my bitch
beh, sunday it is
Wish Fulfillment every time!
CANDLE
The whole of Sister
but especially Stereo Sanctity. Jesus Christ that song's perfect.
Dude
I totally second your "Unmade Bed".
