Edgar Wright: Shaun Of The Dead

Unlike music critics who are overarchingly realistic, at least in consensus, film critics endlessly abuse their ‘authority’ to vindicate their favourite director’s latest misstep. How else could the truly dreadful Unbreakable have garnered such glowing reviews, or the final Matrix sequel be seen to be excusable? It’s hardly much of a surprise then that this Britflick spoof has been afforded several times the promotion of its big-budget colleague, Dawn Of The Dead. The fact is, it simply doesn’t deserve it.
Written by and starring Simon Pegg, the creator of geeky TV comedy Spaced, Shaun Of The Dead is awash with the same slurry of in-jokes and slavish referencing that had film buffs creaming their pants and everyone else reaching for the zapper. Those who find the stereotypical inadequecies of the couch potato amusing rather than pathetic, will no doubt appreciate the movie’s sense of humour. ‘Hero’ Shaun (Pegg) is so busy with his dead-end job and dead-end lovelife that he fails to notice as zombies begin to encroach on his personal space and gobble his friends.
The first few scenes do contain a couple of laughs, but the comedy element is soon ditched to make way for gallons of splatter. Unfortunately though, the horror is mostly toothless, having been ruined by the endless use of cheap loud-noise scares. But at least the effects are solid. Also, kudos to Shaun’s sidekick Ed (Nick Frost), the cuddly, X Box-loving oaf, who manages to lend a smidgen of soul to the proceedings despite being saddled with a rubbish cliché of a character.
Sadly, that’s where the praise must end. The jokes are well-worn and repetitive – the biggest laugh afforded to a ten-second cameo by Matt Lucas – the characters are thoroughly unlikeable and the plot twists are so glaringly obvious that even the writers of Teletubbies would wince with embarassment. All this is compounded by an ending that is both callous and unimaginative. What a waste.

Edgar Wright - Shaun Of The Dead
I loved it. And there's not much in life that can't be improved by the addition of in-jokes and slavish referencing. -

Edgar Wright - Shaun Of The Dead
what a silly silly review
it was very good and a well needed spoof on zombie movies (dawn of the dead is good mind). simon pegg etc has made a great movie that has entertained a whole bunch of people, in jokes or not. also space may be 'geeky' but it is clearly fantastic, especially that episode with the robot wars robot in.....
stick to reviewing music you're good at that

Re: Edgar Wright - Shaun Of The Dead
I thought the review was spot on.
Funny for 30 minutes, like an episode of Spaced.
Died on its arse for an hour.
I only went to see my house in it - their flat is opposite mine.

Edgar Wright - Shaun Of The Dead
Agree with you that Unbreakable and Matrix 2/3 were pants. Liked Shaun Of The Dead though. Possibly a bit too long but still good.-

Edgar Wright - Shaun Of The Dead
You're so very wrong Mr. Edwards. It's by far the best film there's been for a long time. -
Edgar Wright - Shaun Of The Dead
I thought this film was quality - we need more British films with a proper sense of humour, not just 4 weddings/love actually types. -
Re: Edgar Wright - Shaun Of The Dead
i totally disagree, matrix 2 was way better than matrix 1. as entertainment goes, all the 3 movies have poorish acting, but 2 is the most entertaining and the best directed. if you go back and watch 1 now its not very good at all, and even at the time i could only twice when i got it on dvd before it got boring. ok one had a great significance on the way future fight orientated blockbusters were directed and it gave us loads of rubbish spoofs.
i cant figure out the people who watch it 10+ times trying to figure out what it 'means'. its not complicated at all (at least the first one.)
granted 2 and 3 are over complex but the action is way better, and as entertainment goes you cant beat 2 for the action and special effects. i suppose 2 is more of a blockbuster but lets face it thats what 1 was at heart really (if you get past the 'wooo its such a great storyline').
also matrix 1 has/did have the most mistakes ever in a movie (not that that it matters, just thought id point out)
of course its only a matter of opinion, so don't slate me.

Edgar Wright - Shaun Of The Dead
what a bad review.film reviews are the worst bit of drowned in sound.they're sporadic and often pointless.and in this case wrong.-
Re: Edgar Wright - Shaun Of The Dead
matrix 2 and 3 were the biggest piles of shit of all time. The Wachowski brothers (i think thats what there called) made the first one and it was a good un'. Then some exec went 'Cherchinggg' and decided to cash in with 2 and 3 but he obviously forgot that his 'directors' had decided the only way that could make it is by inserting the heads up there own arses. The result, two pretentious films with so much special effects it just became ridiculously boring. oh and shiiiiittttttt acting-
Edgar Wright - Shaun Of The Dead
If this film was supposed to make the viewer tired, perplexed and angry, it was a success. If it was supposed to be as funny as slicing your nose with a mandolin, it was a success. Review in "Cutting the Crap" Shocker Again. Well done. -
Re: Edgar Wright - Shaun Of The Dead
What a bad screen name. "Eskimo" is from a pejorative Algonquian word "Esqimatsuq" meaning "eaters of raw meat", and is no longer acceptable to use it to refer to various groups of people from the northern circumpolar region. It is like saying "never trust a nigger", except slightly more offensive. -
Re: Edgar Wright - Shaun Of The Dead
3 was shit i agree, but 2 wasn't. they all have lame acting. 1 is lame now, but alright at the time, to suggest that the acting in matrix one is any better than the acting in 3 and 2 is a lie.
3 is just silly with the pointless plot twists every 10 minutes or so, so many twists that it just loses the point and the 'emotional' bits just dont work. Also i agree the special effects in 3 are pointless overused and (some) look dated even now.
but i still think 2 is as good as if not better than 1.
but 3 is lame.
