Tool: Creating A New Album
Posted: 14 Apr '04, 20:47
Kings of nu-prog / art-metal, are working on a new record...
Reports suggest that 3/4 of TOOL are currently working on the followup to 2001's 'Lateralus'. Word on the street is that for the past few months, drummer Danny Carey, guitarist Adam Jones and bassist Justin Chancellor have all been jamming together, and they've already got 10 to 12 new songs.
"They're very much in the infant stage, where we have all these different jams and we start piecing them together," Carey said. "There are no true arrangements yet. We like to develop ideas, but we don't want to solidify anything too much until Maynard gets involved," - which'll be in June when A Perfect Circle finish up touring.
Describing the new material, Carey said "There seems to be a little more brute force going on in the music, rather than being lighter and more intricate like some of the stuff on the last record. It still has quirky time changes, but so far we've been working on really heavy stuff."
We predict a release and hopefully a subsequent world tour sometime in the winter.
Tool are also assembling a DVD, featuring footage from the Lateralus tour, which'll be out in the summer. We hope it has some of those great vids that you see once a year on Mtv2, if you're up all night with insomnia.
DiScuss: Tool, the greatest band in the world, ever? Is art-metal, the new art-rock? What other bands who fit into a similar box to Tool should folks check out? Are you praying for them to play Reading?

wasnt sure what to make of them at first but after seeing them at Ozzfest 2002 i was blown away.
completely different to anyone else -
Tool: Creating A New Album
i think that prediction of an album release and tour THIS YEAR is just a tad optimistic. judging by tools previous workrate, not to mention maynards other commitments, we'll be lucky to hear anything new from them this decade! lets be generous, 2008-
dont be cocky
realease dates aril or may 06

Tool: Creating A New Album
I'd think they'd have something out next year - i seem to remember someone saying something about 2005 release - and in response to the main question - YES Tool are definitely the most complete band about. -

Tool: Creating A New Album
Tool are fantastic.
Oceanic by ISIS is a masterpiece, that isn't anything like Tool, but I reckon you'd like it if you like any Tool stuff and also some off the heavier stuff out there. I get a similar buzz off both bands anyways.
And if you like that, Blueprint, Cubic Space Division, (Earthtone9) and to some extent Miocine may also be your cup of tea.-
Re: Tool: Creating A New Album
phwoar. thumbs up to all of that lot...
i far prefer isis to tool though. tool are fantastic at what they do, but some of the pomposity - lyrically as much as anything else - comes across as extremely contrived, and dulls their impact from time to time. whereas isis are just jawdropping. <3

Re: Tool: Creating A New Album
Yeah I guess Tool do sometimes have an air of pomposity about them; although I'm not sure if it's just Maynard's antics with the press half the time. He's seems less publicity shy with A Perfect Circle.
Although I do like the fact that Tool put a lot of effort into their graphical art as well music. I can't think of anyone else that has put in so much effort in the rock / alt genres anyways.... maybe some of the dance orientated stuff can compete ? So yeah I don't know if you meant the arty farty side was the pomposity bit.
Imagine if Aaron ever got time to make a vid for Oceanic.. maybe Carry !!!! Awesome me thinks!!! However I'm told that Pelican use some form of video projection during their shows - hopefully this will make it over to their shows in July/August (Check out Australasia if you like Oceanic). Oh so if you like Isis, you may also want to check out Envy (a Japanese band) who have an album called 'A Dead Sinking Story'... Oh and of course theirs the Isis side project ish Red Sparowes..... I could go on but hell this was an Tool topic, not a HydraHead topic..... So Tool / Isis would be a class gig ey :)

Tool: Creating A New Album
tool tool tool, goddamn amazing band. AEnima has to be my absolute favourite album EVER (along with met-and justice for all) couldn't live without it. cant wait to hear new stuff, but dont reckon it will be out until end of 2005 at earliest. no doubt it will be a masterpiece. -
Tool: Creating A New Album
PLEASE REALESE A NEW ALBUM UNDERTOW MADE ME GROW, AENIMA MADE ME BLOW, SALIVAL MADE ME THROW, LATERALUS NEED I SAY MORE, OPIATE IS AND ARE GREAT GOODBYE FOR NOW SEE YA LATER -
band similar to tool
check out my band, Diastole. similar sorts of ideas executed a little differently. based in London, playing very soon and EP coming up end of november -
Tool: Creating A New Album
Tool are indeed unique, anyone who likes decent music will love them. Like dogmaha, Aenima is my favourite all-time album. They are slack as fuck in getting stuff released but I guess you need time to write music that complicated.
I've had Oceansize to keep me happy since Lateralus, hopefully, both will release their new albums sometime this year. -
Tool: Creating A New Album
I love Tool, Aenima is my favourite album of theirs. I do hope they are to produce a new one this year. I have seen APC perform live, but still waiting to see Tool. Maybe this is the year...-
Re: Tool: Creating A New Album
I agree Aenima is one of the most inventive and honestly passionate forward thinking metal albums ever.
I was watching the video for the single yesterday on TV, well wierd animation.
It's a little strange hearing the lyrics "I'm praying for tidal waves" after recent events but we know what he means.
Do you know Sons Of Tundra are playing The Garage Thurs 27th Jan. They used to be Peach who's bassist left to join Tool. The support act Suitable Case For Treatment are well worth checking out too.
Forgive me if I'm being patronising and telling you stuff you already know.-
yea
there videos are amazing but dont forget that the aenima video came out 2001 5 years after the song was released and dont forget about parabol/parabola probaly there best video to date :) but yea my favorite song your guys is either prison sex or crawl away or 4 degrees yea you guys its cool

Tool: Creating A New Album
I've seen both Tool and APC live. Maynard is god in both cases, but Tool was the most amazing thing i've ever seen.
They were suppost to be in studios june 2004 and onward, and supposedly Danny Carey said that they were going to be done during the winter. But in all realism...this is tool, ill see you in line mid 2008-
dates
april-may 06 yea

Tool: Creating A New Album
Ok, to begin I will say that I don't know much about Tool's personal politics, but I would like to address the post that criticizes Tool by, well I should just quote -gen-...
"i far prefer isis to tool though. tool are fantastic at what they do, but some of the pomposity - lyrically as much as anything else - comes across as extremely contrived, and dulls their impact from time to time. whereas isis are just jawdropping. <3 "
Well, my frame of reference is lacking as I have not heard Isis. Although from what I've read here I'm going to have to investigate. Anyway, I have been able to relate so much of my own human experience through the lyrics of Tool and quite a bit of A Perfect Circle. I figger this is either because Maynard has a talent for relating to people, or I'm a lot like him. It has not been mentioned in any of these threads exactly what much of Maynard's lyrics are about. Spiritual growth, understanding the cause of all mankind's suffering, messages that when fully understood and realized allow the individual to recognize their parasitic identity. In the song Bottom... the spoken words are a dramatization of someone realizing that they are not only their worst enemy, their distorted analyzations of reality are the very cause of all their suffering. Many Tool songs are complete parables in themselves, explaining that which many seek their whole lives and never find. In "Reflection", you are made to understand how miserable this person is. But at their lowest point, they realize that the moon's light is borrowed, but not just the moon's. We are all driven by light, unified through it, and cannot escape it. Every morsel that enters your mouth is condensed sunshine and stardust, and that's all you are. Dust in the Wind, great song. Anyway, back to the song "Reflection" quickly, and then I'll shutup. The point is most literally related when Maynard writes.. "So crucify the ego, before it's far too late, and leave behind this place so negative, in line, and cynical, and you will come to find that we are all one mind, capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable, so let the light touch you so that the words spill through, and let them pass right through, bringing out our/all hope and reason." You truly have to allow yourself to see the truth, uncluttered by thought. And this is what the great Buddha called enlightenment.
ANYWAY my final point I want to make is... I have loved tool since the moment I started listening to them, but it was only after finding enlightenment that I actually understood most of the lyrics. I only love them 100 times more, and my guess is that would be par for course for everyone involved. Plus, it rocks to realize everything's cool and it's all good in the hood ok I'm seriously gonna quit flappin my flappies... peace..-
Re: Tool: Creating A New Album
I think I can relate 'Hooker With A Penis' to a lot of people on this and other music forums. :D

Tool: Creating A New Album
I think tool is simply the greatest band ever. Maynard has the best vocals out there. A perfect circle rocks to...
hey i have an question. Nine inch nails or marilyn manson?-
Re: Tool: Creating A New Album
NIN, personally. Songwriting is slightly more inventive. Except With Teeth, of course...a bit more radio-friendly.-
Re: Tool: Creating A New Album
i agree with your pick>>>

Tool: Creating A New Album
First of all, absolutely cannot wait for this new album. Rumors about August 23rd are kicking around a lot, but which year? Plus it could be for the Lateralus DVD. Either way, I want it.
As for the pomposity, get over it. That whole "Hooker with a Penis" gig, it's an establishment between artist and consumer. Seriously, fans worship Maynard and he honestly gets sick of it like many sincere artists would. The song merely states that he's the artist and we're the consumer, so shut up and buy his record like the relationship states. It doesn't get any deeper than that. So I have respect for him that he stays down to earth in that sense.
And there's been some chatter on Toolarmy about a possible Tool and Isis tour, so yes, musical euphoria may be only a show away.-
heres the relase dates
my friend there planned to be realeased may or april 2006 as daney said so so look on shelves around this time

When is TOOL due?
do you think they should take there time or do you think they should just hurry up?-
Re: When is TOOL due?
With Tool, i've learnt to wait- it's normally worth it - see the mind-bendingly awesome last album - i guess it's on a par with opening your christmas presents early - it spoils the fun -
Re: When is TOOL due?
Quote MJK:
"...to take the time that the music needs to take before you present it. For me to have done Lateralus and then come out with another Tool album within a year wouldn't have been a good step forward. We've always subscribed to the idea that you have to process life experiences and go through your natural progression as an artist to let the [music] come out, rather than forcing it out. We're just the kind of band where it takes a long time for us to process."
http://www.mtv.com/bands/a/a_perfect_circle/news_feature_040122/
I say give 'em all the time they need as long as they use it. There are plenty more fascinating bands out there to keep a Tool fan occupied. In fact, go pick up Porcupine Tree's Deadwing already, no complaints from anyone on Toolarmy, mostly praise. Isis, APC and Neurosis are a given.
Let 'em play, let 'em play... -
take there time
it has been known thru time that if bands take there time they produce better music in my opinion TOOLS ALBUMS HAVE NEVER BEEN DISSAPOINTING and as far as i know there worth the wait
