There are oh so many, but right now mine would have to be 'File Under: Easy Listening' by Sugar - probably the best thing Bob Mould ever did, released right in time for Britpop to happen and everyone to ignore it. If there is a God, he'll have seen to it that Sony Records didn't take one look at the sales figures and delete it forever when they bought out Creation; but there must be copies still circulating. Buy it, and swoon.

There's a nice little Sugar/Bob Mould biog at http://www.creationrecords.org.uk/sugar.htm

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Sugar were good yup.

Another criminally overlooked band was Strangelove.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

First two Strangelove albums were really good (there's a few dodgy bits on Love And Other Demons, but it still has glorious moments, particularly '20th Century Cold' and Patrick's opening bellow of "Heeeey Jesuuuu-uuus!" on 'Living With The Human Machines'). All went a bit pie-shaped after that though, innit? Damn that smack.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

I saw Patrick Duff play an acoustic gig in some little arts café in London a few months back, he's back and better than ever... quite possibly the most charismatic, engaging, full on balls out singer I've seen in a while.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Yeah, I think their best is Time for the rest of your life....I love the emotion that Duff conveys in his lyrics. Also they toured with Radiohead many a year ago dont think the head might have got a few tips?

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Groop Dogdrill were a band that should have been huge. Their album ‘every six seconds’ is just fantastic!

Also I think the At the Drive-in album, ‘In/casino/out’ is criminally overlooked. That cd is really explosive and probably the best ATD-I cd but it is always over-shadowed by Relationship of Command

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Wasn't it on a tiny indie? To be honest, I've never heard it and no-one I know's got a copy - and MVC's the only record shop in a 30-mile radius so chances of tracking down a copy in my town are minimal. Ah, the country life. Ho-hum.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

i personallt thing VAYA kicks its ass all the way.
its nice an all, and hourglass is one of their best momenst, but vaya's so much tighter and rounded and charismatic.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

XTC's "Skylarking" is easily the most underrated album in the history of popular music. I seriously can't understand why it isn't rated alongside the classics - it's a flawless collection of beautiful songs, intricately and charismatically presented, performed with passion and conviction, immaculately recorded. Andy Partridge is pop's forgotten genius, and for some reason he received next to no critical or commercial acclaim.

I also think Spiritualized's "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space" has not yet got all the acclaim it deserves, even though it's had quite a lot over the last few years.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Songs: Ohia's "Didn't it rain" is very underrated, and it deserves to be heard in all it's downbeat glory. I am also Liking the Thorns album as well.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Works In Progress by Torben Floor. I don't think they're even signed and it makes me horribly angry. From Chicago I think, you might still be able to order it over the net somehow.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

The Auteurs - After Murder Park
Supposedly of the same breed as Pulp, Suede et all, yet Mr. Haines blew them all away with probably the darkest indie record every recorded. Musically, its relatively sparse, but this only works in its favour, with dark lead guitar lines over upbeat acoustic rhythm sections. Pretty simple, but it remains fucking effective. The true genius on AFM is the lyrical content - songs like 'Unsolved Child Murder' and 'Buddha' suggest something very sinister going on. Dark as FUCK. Indie rock inspired by Wire, instead of the many Smiths plagarists. The greatest album of its genre, for sure. Go get it off Amazon if you're bored of cliched, glittered-up toilet boys.

Notable others..
Elastica - s/t - post punk perfection
The Teardrop Explodes - Kilimanjaro - best pop album ever?

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

I'd go for 'Wilder' rather than 'Kilimanjaro' (certainly in the overlooked stakes - I've met hardcore Julian Cope fans who've never even heard it). Thing is, musically it's still quite wonderful, there are beautiful poppy moments and ba-ba-bas and HORN, but lyrically it's quite simply one of the saddest albums ever recorded - he was losing his mind, and his life had gone to shit, and it was too late to do anything about it, and it was all his own fault, and he knew it. It's kind of difficult to explain, but while Kilimanjaro sounds really full and is basically 100% perfect pop, Wilder has that feeling you can never put an adjective to - an underlying bleakness, a terrible depth. If, as I really hope, you know what I mean.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Julian Copes autobiographys are a good laugh. If you can get the copy with the 2 books together, have a look. His tales about Mac the mouth are fun.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

yeah, 'Head On' was a great read, thought the bit where they play 'Sock' in the tourbus with a bag full of cheap acid summed up some of the destructive nature that Cope's associated with.

as for underrated albums, 'Cold Water Songs' by Broken Family Band or something by Richard Hawley is all i can really think of on the lush semi-acoustic side of things at the moment...

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

damn right. 'late night final' is frighteningly beautiful. new album should be out soon. currently my most-anticipated of the year...

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Soundgarden's last studio album "Down On The Upside" never got the credit it deserved (neither did the band in my opinion). The Garden were an incredibly talented and forward-thinking band that got slapped with the grunge tag by people who never even bothered to seriously examine their music. Upside was released in 1996 and was largely overlooked due to the cancerous Britpop scene. It contains some of the most unorthodox and emotional music I've ever heard while simultaneously veering into brilliant sonic chaos at just the right moments. Lyrically, Chris Cornell is among my favourites (excluding Audioslave). Check out the lyrics to one of the albums' best tracks, Zero Chance -

I know you're hoping for a response in the opposite, but I would say, definetely, absolutely and conclusively NOT yours SeymourMBA.

oh yeah, thanks for reminding me:
Miss Black America - God Bless Miss Black America

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Nail. Head. The. On. Hit.

Methadone boy, you are wise. Soundgarden are unbelievably overlooked. Criminally so. And yes, the 90s British music scene was so poor in comparison at that time that I am bewildered that people actually bought anything British that decade.

Soundgarden or Oasis? Just asking the question makes me feel dirty.....

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

My God, a Soundgarden fan! You've brought joy to my heart Youdontknow.

In relation to Soundgarden/Oasis or Britpop in general - I couldn't agree more. Soundgarden were writing complex, melodic and cerebral beauties about nihilism and total apocalypse while everyone else I knew was singing "We are young! We are free!" Give me a fucking break....

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

yes! great call - just can't get enough of 'Tighter and Tighter' - chillingly anthemic

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

'Boot camp' was one of the best tunes they ever did.

Overlooked records....

'This world and body' by Marion

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

alex
xxxx

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Yes. 'New Transistor Heroes' is glorious.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

INDEED
I like to think new transitor heroes has helped shape my music taste for the better, as I got it when I was really young.
anyone with any scrap of musical taste should be issued this on the national cariculum

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Yep, Stephen Malkmus And The Jicks, both albums but particularly the first. In my top five albums of 2001 methinks, that 'un.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Six by Seven - The Closer You Get. Passion, invention, darkness, tunes, musicianship, riffs, inspiration, anger, noise from the most criminally overlooked band of all time

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

for me its any album by gorky's zygotic mynci. theyre all so good.

then crash kelly - penny pills, read the review on hear, got it straight away. its all ready out of print. theyre awsome

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Auteurs, yes!

Jocasta were another who produced a great album and were ignored. Boo!

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Supergrass got hell of a lot better though, and I recon In It For The Money is very overlooked.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Auteurs: After Murder Park (as above). Yes, yes, yes...

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

i tell you who is overlooked constantly.

its MC Mabon, a welsh genius, his music is awsome and he does so many different styles, all with a welsh classiness.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

FASHIONS ALBUM "FABRIQUE" FROM 1982 PURE CLASS !!
FIND IT AND BUY IT !!!!!

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

'Nowhere' by Ride. Got more than slightly overshadowed by My Bloody Valentine (OK I'll accept that) but then the same thing happened when Creation signed up five apes to see if monkeys really could play instruments and gave them too much cocaine. In conclusion fuck Oasis, kudos to Ride.

Also, considering how The Strokes, The *insert shitty one word band name here* et al ripped them off so much, Television should be fucking minted with 'Marquee Moon' by now. No wonder they've got back together.

Oh, and 'Oceanic' by Isis; that's got to be one of the best albums ever released. And the two 'Low Level Owl' albums by The Appleseed Cast; geniussssssss. Finally, anyone who likes the whole Seattle hardcore sound (i.e. Botch, Drive Like Jehu, Kill Sadie) should go get the These Arms Are Snakes EP. That is the shit.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Isis are fucking awesome.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Damn straight. I would put Explosions In The Sky down here (what with them being my favourite band and everything) but they've actually begun to get some recognition recently.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Absolutely. I've seen Explosions four times this year already. It would be beyond criminal if 'The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place' were overlooked.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Where did you see them? Seen them twice this year; it would have been more if I wasn't a 17 year old constrained by lack of money and exams etc etc. Saw them at the Zodiac in May (wish I'd gone to the Camden gig seeing as they played my two favourite songs at that one and their equipment didn't go all retarded on them) and at the ICA in February, which slayed.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

murder city devils. 'nuff said.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Actually, most of that scene (Botch etc etc). Cos they were from Seattle they got overshadowed by the ghost of Nirvana.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Well agree with that. 'Nowhere' is definately an overlooked classic. 'Going Blank Again' is a top follow up as well. 'Twisterella' is one of the most perfect pop songs ever written.

It all went downhill a bit for me after 'Carnival of Light'. Fuck knows how they thought they could get away with 'Crown of Creation'

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Well, they didn't, did they? Bit too much Oasis worship going on, which seems ridiculous - they didn't need to try and be something they weren't because what they were was so good. Isn't it about time they got their due respect? I mean, MBV have been consistently hailed as all-time genius for the last decade but Ride were no less fantastic, or influential. Plus yeah, 'Nowhere' is a fantastic album and I wish I hadn't lost my copy. :(

Incidentally, am I the only person who's convinced there's a sample from 'Kaleidoscope' at the start of 'Firestarter' by the Prodigy?

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Failure - Magnified

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Devo - Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo

Jerky sci-fi surrealist garage punk, with added disturbingness. Much overlooked due to their later synthpop stuff.
"It smashed my baby's head, and now my sally's dead"

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Produced by Brian Eno too. Fancy.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Spot on there with the Devo.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

The Cat Empire.

The most talent bunch of musicians I've ever seen perform live.

They raised the roof off the Arena in March.

Thinking about it even, makes me breathless and slightly overwhelmed.

The praise I give this band is never enough. No words can do them justice.

And their album; "The Cat Empire" is one of my most treasured belongings. Brilliant.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

I would have to add Happy go lickys- will play. formed with the same memebers from rites of spring, happy go licky only lasted about a year due to Brendan Canty and Guy Picciotto joining fugazi. They never put out a record too but these live recordings are intense and experimantal. On listening one can't help but wish they were in DC in 87.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

The Boo Radleys - Giant Steps

Giant Steps

YES!
YES!
YES!

Thankyou. :)

Re: Giant Steps

well what do you expect from someone called Tommyboo?

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

The last Pavement album.

ANYTHING by The Afghan Whigs

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

It has to be Super Furry Animals - Radiator. Pure pop genius.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

whizz303:

SPOT.

ON.

i second Super Furry Animals - Radiator.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Aye, gets my vote. I suppose it has been overlooked recently - nothing they've done since has been anywhere near as perfect. That said, nothing they've done since has been recorded in a shed in the middle of winter for 5p a day plus a bag of chips for the engineer.

From this, we learn two things:

1) IT PAYS TO BE CHEAP.

2) CHIPS ARE GOOD.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Aren't you overlooking 'Mwng'?

(That's the album, not the DiS user).

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

i always thought it was a bit strange that 'adore' by the smashing pumpkins got such a cold reception, and is considered daftness by the ban's 'fans'. Beautiful record. and just loking over at my cds i'm also thinking the last elbow record, everything by ben folds five, r.e.m.'s last three, anything by clouddead. coming up by suede- SHOULDN'T have been a great album, but, fuck, it was. post-odelay beck. 'today' by the beach boys (Five quid, twinned with another album, in bargain bins, totally ignored, but, oh- genius.) Blur by Blur.
Of course some of these albums were commercial successes but i never hear them mentioned in the canon so beloved of Q/NME etc.
And every jazz album ever, 'cos we've allowed the coolsters to taint it all with the cullum brush. For me, Kind of Blue/Bitches Brew by Miles Davis meant a lot. And The Black Saint by Mingus. And Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus by Mingus.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Young Lawyer by Frenchkicks...

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

The Warm Jets 'Future signs' - Kind of got ignored buy indie purists because the singer Louis had a brief fling with Zoe Ball before she met Fatboy. Bowie/Pavement/Music Hall influences, quality record.

Seafood 'When do we start fighting' - Have never been given the recognition they deserve.

Life without Buildings - 'Any other City' - The Fall if Mark.E . Smith was female and was a secret Belle and Sebastien drinker.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Warm Jets - yep, i never knew about the Zoe Ball thing, wondered why they weren't huge...

Seafood - if that's the album with 'This Is Not An Exit' opening it up then you definitely onto something there...

Life Without Buildings - Love 'em, tink tink...

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Trespassers William definitely. They don't even have a profile page up here, but Anna-Lynne's voice is amazing, breathtaking. Such a shame they're not better-known.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Mansun - Six, pure genius

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

What I was going to say. And Buffseeds' The Picture Show.

Re: Criminally Overlooked Genius Albums

Oh! And any of Cornershop's albums...particularly their first one...
