Elliott's father speaks about the final album...

Nearly two years ago DiS got excited about the prospect of the follow-up to 'Figure 8', which was entitled 'From a Basement on the Hill'. We then discovered it was too dark for Dreamwerks to release. And then followed an 'incident' which led to Elliott's death.

In an update to SweetAdeline.net his official website, Elliott's father told fans the final studio release is currently in the final mixing stages, with tentative plans for a release in September and October on a label to be chosen by his family.

The 30+ songs were recorded at Smith's own studio, which his family has now decided to sell the equipment from (after unsuccesfully trying to keep the studio operational, as is), as a complete lot. It should be noted, however, that none of Smith's instruments will be sold.

DiScuss: What's the latest conspiracy theory about Elliott's death? Will his career forever be overshadowed like Tupac? Only the good die young? Has it even sunk in yet that he's gone?

the only nice thing about this is that his family are currently semi-in-charge of his unreleased material. which should hopefully mean that any posthumous stuff will be respectfully released.

did anyone read the Guardian's article on the Elliott Smith "murder" conspiracy?? the most pointless piece of journalism i've read in a while. let the guy rest. the conspiracy theories just serve to add to the 'rock n roll' mythology that, in the end, obscures the music. and he definitely deserves better than that.

Re: Elliott Smith: 'From A Basement...', The Final Album Release Slated for Later this Year

agree - elliot smith was just a sad and depressed songwriter who suffered in ways that the majority of the public dont. creative & depressed seems like a combination here to stay. his albums were immense pieces of songwriting and i felt very sad the day i heard he died. but life goes on.....

Just a shame that its come to all of this. Elliot should be the one releasing this album himself. I'm sure it will be a great collection of songs anyway. Might even lead to some insight into his thinking towards the end.

I liked his records a lot and if the idea of his being murdered or whatever spreads the word then maybe that's all that's left to do. Let the elaborate storys fly and get Elliott posthumasly on every cover of every magazine and sell, sell, sell. There's nothing else left to do is there really?

I just really miss jim, it's so sad that he won't ever be here anymore. The biggest loss to music since Kurt Cobain.

Re: Elliott Smith: 'From A Basement...', The Final

Me too buddy. I miss him too.

Ya fucker Elliott. Can't wait to hear that new record though.
I've purposely avoided downloading any tracks, I want to hear it how he intended it.

Conspiracy theory? Come on, it's fucking obviously suicide. Let him rest. And to compare him to that twat Tupac... You've hit a nerve, Sean! I'm extremely excited about hearing his final works, however... Can't wait!

Re: Elliott Smith: 'From A Basement...', The Final Album Release Slated for Later this Year

"Fucking obviously suicide"?

Think you should read the coroner's report on his death, which was of course given an 'open verdict' - the police couldn't deem it a suicide because several aspects were not consistent with suicide.

Conspiracy theories are bound to be complete bumf, as they generally are. However, there is the definite possibility his girlfriend was more involved than she says (her being the only witness...). Take a look at the report here: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/esmithaut1.html

But yes, let him rest. And the Guardian should know better if they really are giving any credence to 'conspiracy theories'.

I read this article for the first time today (thesmokinggun)

It is the most heartbreaking combination of words that I have ever read. It kills me. May Elliott's legacy never fade.

DONT GO TOO FAR.. WE WERENT THERE!

look past the surface facts,

would you place you life and threaten your love life by just believe stupid surface truths,

We werent there!

But if we pretend to be God, and make massive judgements, saying elliot smith did this or that, is quite obsene.

I personally am totally blowen away by elliot smith, and see his death as untimely, but unsuprising as another victim of the so called music business

...

Did you get the impression from my post that I believe in the Elliott conspiracy theory/ies?
