Went to see Ikara Cult last night for the first time in ages. Have loved them since Sink Venice and have always thought they were an amzing live band.

Except last night they weren't. Ok it didn't help that you couldn't here his vocals but there just didn't seem to be very much passion anymore. For a band like Ikara Cult the really means that they have stopped existing.

Worse was blaming the venue and the sound guy for the vocals. The support bands got there shit sorted out and sounded fine. MInd you it was blatantly obvious last night that he fancies himself quite a lot which always pisses me off.

Wasn't a complte write of though as I saw Yourcodenameis: Milo again who were excellant and Help her shes drowning(I think thats right) who, after a slow start showed some real promise.

So what bands who you once loved should really pull the plug now? Its very easy to slag a bnad you've never liked but can you pull apart a band who once meant something to you?

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Manic Street Preachers are always a good bet.

I don't want to be the one to do it though. Or not tonight anyway, i might come back to it.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Manics used to mean so much to me and it really sickens me to see what they've be come. I cant watch them or listen to them any more. They even used to look really cool. They grabbed the music industry by the balls back then, now its the music industry grabbing there balls to produce crap AOR albums for people in Ben Sherman shirts who like a few stellas in the sun with their shirts off.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

sorry but i disagree with the comment that Ikara Colt are going to pot. Sure there'll never be the feeling that you would have got at, say, the Eighties Matchbox/Ikara Colt/Parkinsons gigs a few years ago, but i saw the Colt a few days ago and it was an absolutely astounding gig, i thought they played brilliantly. Then again it is the first time i've seen them, and they were really friendly to me...

look forward to the Manics making their 'Kid A' :->

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

I've never managed to see Ikara Colt live (I know, I know, why not...), but from what I've heard of the new material they do seem to have a lost something. Before they had an angry, raw energy, but now they've returned and they can actually play their instruments and write real songs, so they don't have such a need to be energetic anymore. BTW, I do love Ikara Colt, even though it may not seem so from this paragraph!

I've just seen the new Hives single on MTV, and I hope the album's better than that track. Its probably just that a couple of years ago, the Hives were "band of the moment", but now there's better bands out there and I don't care about the Hives anymore. :-( I remember being so excited the first time I heard "Main Offender"... can't really see why now.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Idlewild - TRP was nowhere near as good as the previous albums.
Yeah yeah yeahs - EP was great, album not so great.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Bang right there, Idlewild's last LP was crap.
Not heard YYYs album, but saw em live and apart from the EP, nearly all their tunes were...not even crap, just deeply, deeply forgettable...

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Hives...yeah, that new track is a bit poor, no?
Idlewild...would much rather jump about to something like 'Paint Nothing' or 'Last Night i Missed All The Fireworks', as i've probably said before, should be interesting to see if they keep going towards U2/REM style rock now Bob's left...
Yeah Yeah Yeahs...parts of the album felt a bit too below-standard, but it has some brilliant moments...not much as good as 'Bang' or 'Our Time' though...
Ikara Colt...they could always play and it has always been exciting, have you not SEEN Dominic play drums?
Strokes...'Room On Fire' appeared to have more filler...blame the hype...
Vines...nuff said...

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Ikara Colt: Yeh, the drumming is, and always has been fantastic, technically and from a purely "RAWK!" point of view. But listen to almost any track from "Chat and Business", and compare to "Wake in the city" or "Wanna be that way" and the musicanship and songwriting has definately improved a lot. Almost so much as to take away what was originally exciting about them. But I won't judge them until I hear the album...roll on Monday!
With songs like "One Note", they were hardly virtuosos though, were they?

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

the album is very good.

but its no different to c&b, have they really changed live?

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

With songs like "One Note", they were hardly virtuosos though, were they?

some of the best bands aren't. But that's probably your point...sorry...

('one note' WAS a great idea, no? one note + screaming = brilliance! )

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

IC were always far more about their delviery than any virtuosity/ultra-proficiency of their performance, though. imho. In which case any substantial improvement in the latter isn't (necessarily) of any consequence for how good the new stuff is.......
it may have even had a negative effect - when I saw them recently they were inexplicably underwhelming, really lacked the hunger and the bite they'd always had before, so full of fight and disdain..soething's changed there, whatever's the cause..
wasn't the only one by the looks of here..

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

well i thought they sounded great...different night?

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Portsmouth.........though the PA there currently seems to die of fright everytime a loud guitar goes near it I'll admit. but the new ones Peel has played aren't a patch on the first LP's tracks so far either.. *concerned*...

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

yeah i'm glad people brought up the idlewild problemo....

it's really sad their sound has become so kind of indifferent where once it really felt important, defined, unique and powerful. I don't mind the new stuff but i can't believe anyone can find the recent albums more moving or exciting than Captain or Hope is Important.

*sends psychic messages to idlewild recording in california: make better albums.....now!*

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Oooohhhh....goody good. Might have to check the EP out.

With the seconds at the Buffalo would be great if I had money.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

NO!
their second album was good. It was just REALLY hard to make cuz the first one was so outstanding. The second one just took longer to get into, its still better than loads of bands around now who are doing the whole minimal electro with guitars thing that they did it a while ago.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

eee i listened to their song on the website just now.
it's vvv good.
wants.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

I hate to say it but Sea Change by Beck was awful, when I bought Midnite Vultures I hated it but the more I listened to it the more I liked it and that's what my mom (who happens to be in love with Beck) said will happen with this one, but I've had a year to grow accustomed to it and I still think it be awful.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Sea Change is the best beck album. Lost Cause is a beautiful song.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

I've got all Beck's commercially available albums (and I say commercially available as I don't own the rare cassette albums that he recorded donkeys years ago) and I have to say that Sea Change is the one I play the most. Especially after seeing him perform it at the Royal Albert Hall - mind blowing.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Sea Change is very 1D but a good album nonetheless. I love lost cause and the golden age

beck - Sea Change

It's not his first completely coherent album (Midnight Vultures was the first that didn't suffer from Beastie Boys-syndrome - half killer tunes, half terrible filler) but Sea Change is absolutely beautiful (esp the strings/guitar interplay in Paper Tiger, and when he starts going "Aaa-aaaah" at the end of Sea Change the song), and I'd say his best - it's just not a party album. In fact, it's so great I'm gonna put it on now. And wank.

Re: beck - Sea Change

woah, Seymour!!? The Beasties being used as a derrogatory term to describe a Beck albums? Eeesh. That hurts.

I love all the Beck albums I have like i wrote them myself (Sea Change, Odelay, Midnite Vultures)...the only thing that has stopped me getting any of the others is the fact that I am and always have been too skint.

I can't wait to hear what he comes up with next. The man is a genius. The enigmatic fun loving showman at one turn and then the most heartbraking lyricist.

....back to the topic tho, bands that have gone down hill??

well, i've gone for an artist/producer: Dan the Automator: where is he now. a decade of amazing work, and now....nothing?? i really hope he didn't bow out with that mix tape CD. someone tell me otherwise, please??

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

...and you will know us by the trail of dead. a fucking revelation the first time i saw them, bollocks when they played reading a couple of years back. madonna was a wicked album, sources tags and codes was bloatewd self-ondulgent and over-produced. last year's ep made no attempt to rectify that, finally living up to suggestions that they're just a sonic youth rip-off.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Placebo. 1st album amazing, 2nd album real quality, 3rd had moments... ever since has been downhill.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Just chipping in with my tuppence - Source Tags and Codes is one of my favourite albums; Remote Part is good but yes, definitely lacks the urgency and energy of the earlier stuff and I prefer 100 Broken Windows; Sea Change I just think is utterly fantastic.

Other bands that went shit? Boo Radleys. Ride. Cure. Oasis (obviously). Charlatans look to be going a bit off the boil. Primal Scream went in a direction which I don't like so much - whether that means it's shit is opinion.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Saw the Charlies the other night, they were as good as always. Couldn't get into the new album until I saw them play bits of it live but I've barely stopped playing it now.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Boo Radley's last album was not the best, listened to it last night for the first time in ages. Eurostar and Free Huey are great though.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Yeah, I agree - after the triple whammy of 'Everything's alright forever', 'Giant Steps' and 'Wake up..' I guess they could only go downhill. Such a shame though.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Really like new Primal Scream stuff, for me Exterminator is their best album along with Screamadelica.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

i like xtmntr and evil heat a hell of a lot more than screamadelica [i just never got it] and give out.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

what happened to metallica?

*cries for 10 years of crappiness*

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

Michael Jackson.

Just a couple of things that I can't quite remember right now that have put me off. Whatever happened to that cute little kid.

And while we are at it what about Stevie Wonder? Blue for fucks sake! What a cocksmoker.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

"whatever happened to that cute little kid" - he dropped the charges after receiving a substantial out of court settlement.

Re: Bands you love going a bit shite

$10 million settlement too. I'd let the paedo pop genius do ANYTHING for that amount...
