Best album of the year so far?

IMHO it's been a really shitty year so far. The only album released that I'd consider essential is 'Penance Soiree' by The Icarus Line. Alright, so Sonic Youth, Mono, Dillinger, Converge and a few others have yet to release albums but overall it blows.

    Fucking right on. 'Penance Soiree' is the best thing of the last few years, if you ask me. Utter, utter genius.

    Looking forward to records from Sonic Youth, Wire, Mark Lanegan and Green Day.

    Most overrated record of the year - The Killers 'Hot Fuss'.

    Graham Coxon all the way... not one of the albums I was expecting to be a fave of mine (I never liked him till I heard "Freakin' Out") but it's definately got my vote. It's good enought to be acclaimed as an all time classic, I reckon, but only time will tell. I think he's been badly served by the fact that "Oh, he's just that bloke who used to play guitar in Blur." While this has undoubtedly given him some publicity, he doesn't get enough respect as an artist in his own right.

      Ah shit. Forgot about Mclusky. I haven't got around to buying that yet but if the album/song titles are anything to go by then it should be up there with Does Dallas.

      I've pre-ordered the Mono album off Amazon and judging from the clips on the website it sounds geniusssss. Especially Lost Snow. Are there any "fuck me how did it get so loud?" moments like with Com? on the last album? When I got 'One Step More...' I thought they were a bit too close to Mogwai to be truely great but I've totally changed my mind about them. Maybe it's just cos I know they're from Japan, but they sound properly Japanese.

      I was quite impressed by the yourcodenameis:milo debut, and Morrissey's album was decent.

      I'm looking forward to the Chikinki album too, should be pretty good.

      I would say:
      "Now Here is Nowhere" by Secret Machines
      "Franz Ferdinand" by Franz Ferdinand
      "Happiness in Magazines" by Graham Coxon
      "Up At The Lake" by The Charlatans

      .. but let's see how the
      - Razorlight
      - Kasabian
      albums will be like.

      Razorlight's is going to be released on June 21st, Kasabian's in August this year :)

        I think The Futureheads Album will be my Favourite of the year.

        I think that albums from Mùm and the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players are good too.

    Some awesome Aussie bands have pumped out the new stuff.

      Love them. Love the Aussie accent in a rock/rap song.

    Morrissey, Franz Ferdinand and Graham Coxon... would probably put South and The Shins in there but they were released in the US last year so shouldn't really count.

    Hope Of The States will be much better than any of those though, I hope.

          Yeah, at it was released last autumn for the first time, making it 2003.

          I always count first release dates.

          I had it in 2003, it made my best of 2003 list.

    The only 2004 albums I own so far are:
    Brand New - Deja Entendu
    Ash - Meltdown
    The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free

    But I'm looking forward to hearing the forthcoming albums by Wilco, Sonic Youth, Hope of the States and Modest Mouse. REM, Trail Of Dead, Jimmy Eat World, Built To Spill, the Manics and Mercury Rev are all reported to be releasing albums later this year too, so it could yet be a great year.

        If you check the metacritic.com upcoming release section, it says it's due this autumn. Not totally sure about the reliability of that though.

      Well, having just bought the new SY album I've got to say it kicks a fair amount of arse. First impressions are that it's up their with 'Daydream' and 'Evol'. Geniusssss. And the Mono album should be coming today too. Happy days.

    i thought my chemical romance would be unbelieveable but it isn't all that good. i still think it is one of my best album s but i haven't listened to it much yet.

    as soon as i get hope of the states tomorrow ill decide.

        Mylo - Destroy Rock And Roll is really winning my affections. "Drop The Pressure" is one of the top 5 songs of the year for me.

          I think its been a great year with xiu xiu, animal collective, modest mouse, deerhoof, liars, tv on the radio and blonde redhead all making exciting albums.

    Faded Seaside Glamour was disappointing, although they were excellent live.

    Have to disagree, American Whip by Joy Zipper is going to be the perfect soundtrack to a long hot lazy summer. My favourite song on the album changes every week which I find is always a good sign.
