Lostprophets are back with new haircuts and a further development to their Glassjaw-lite screamo-pop. Start Something was a surprise as most were expecting what the band had promised (“the heaviest album ever”), but instead received an unexpected mixture of exquisitely polished emo and syrupy sweet retro-styled guitar pop. Liberation Transmission, you’ll be pleased to know, sees the Welshmen return in triumphant fashion.

They’ve always been big fans of rallying calls during some ridiculously overblown choruses, as per ‘Burn, Burn’ from their last album and true to form, ‘Everyday Combat’ kicks things off, signalling their intent from the get go. It’s a fast but glossy call-to-arms anthem with undertones of fighting the odds, replete with Jamie Oliver’s auxiliary vocals as ever peppering the mix.

The newly restyled quintet follows that overproduced crowd pleaser with a decidedly new wave-influenced belter in ‘A Town Called Hypocrisy’. This is not such a surprise when put into the context that this is the band that, in a fully appreciated attempt at cross-Atlantic relations, introduced The Bronx to these shores. Throughout this song you will find yourself waiting for handclaps but sadly, they never come.

‘The New Transmission’ sees even more shouted, fist-pumping action around the time of yet another killer chorus but it's spoilt somewhat, by a sub-par imitation of the already sub-par Taking Back Sunday during what I think you will find is the safest middle eight breakdown ever. Yes, it sounds lovely, but where’s the passion? Where’s the oomph? Where’s my goosebumps?

Another frantic ending is blended effortlessly into what seems to be ‘Last Train Home’ Part 2 and, after hitting the Top 10, is most certainly this year’s summer anthem for kids glued to MySpace by their bad fringes. Ian Watkins’ disgraceful emo-baiting antics in ‘Rooftops’ is absolutely inexcusable.

Watkins never was the hottest lyricist in town but his abstract streams of nonsense almost reach new heights here. Each song seems to be geared around more or less the same theme of battling against the odds or getting over a relationship or being a little bit different from the rest. Where are those emo kids? Why haven’t they bought this album yet? Oh. They have.

Despite the lyrical shortcomings, Lostprophets have crafted a dozen magnificent tunes here. ‘Can’t Stop, Gotta Date With Hate’, like most of the songs on here tempers the lack of all meaning with unbelievably memorable choruses, some breathtaking melodies from Watkins and masterful guitarwork that just refuses to let go.

On the whole the album is decidedly formulaic, however. There are only so many times you can hear the phrase “Woah-oh” before you start to wonder if they’re not trying to exploit the power of the verbal slogan a bit too much. ‘Everybody’s Screaming’ sadly falls victim to this exact problem. A song that had great potential if an extra bit of edge was added to it, became a casualty of the crap police as they turned it into a horribly safe slice of could-have-been.

‘4:am Forever’ almost absolves Lostprophets of all blame. Ever. They’ve created a magnificent masterpiece; a resoundingly epic anthem with a chorus so massive it would manage to engulf the entire 1980s should it ever manifest itself as a physical being. Luckily, this will never happen so Roxette and Duran Duran are safe for now.

While producer, Bob Rock may have been denigrated after his work with Metallica – he was said to have ended their days of thrash – his style is perfectly suited to Lostprophets sound. Ultimately he can only work with what he’s given. Lostprophets provided some delicious licks and some luscious choruses for Rock to make sparkle and he did just that.

While Liberation Transmission may be a lyrical vacuum, it is also a musical masterclass in how to create 12 tracks of killer with almost no filler.

  • Lostprophets 7 / 10
  • Mixed feelings towards this

Overall I think's its an OK, but ultimately disappointing, record. Some of the tracks are brilliant hooky pop-rock songs depsite the often poor lyrics. Some however, are shite. 'Everybody's Screaming!!!' is terrible; it wouldn't even make a good b-side.

I thought that the main strength of 'Start Something' was that it was incredibly poppy and catchy yet retained some sort of edge, and this record doesn't.

  • I don't understand why this band is taken seriously on this website,

when you make bands like Kasabian, and even the Feeling look silly.

Lostprophets are so carefully polished, they're fragile.

They're like a reeeeeally milky cup of tea.

    • Good review

I agree with it all. Would have maybe given it an 8 though.

    • WOW

straight in at No.1 with a bullet

      whodathunkit?!

      Take that Keane!

      • I don't understand why any bands aren't taken seriously on this website

I'm glad that Lostprophets are taken seriously here because most reviews of them seem to be written by elitist morons with giant chips on their shoulders. I've read so many reviews with read more like crtitques of Ian Watkins' hair stylist than his music.

Having listened to their last two records again, I think its the lack of layers on this album that I don't like.

        • Would rather drink

everything that comes out of an aids clinic than ever hear this band again.

"a musical masterclass in how to create 12 tracks of killer with almost no filler"

          You. Do. Not. Deserve. Ears.

          • For once, I'd agree with Wrightylew

I haven't heard anything except 'Rooftops' so I can't comment on this album. I did buy 'Start Something' and, whilst caught up by the anthems, I was disappointed that all the power of the guitar was lost under layers of musical Pledge - and I like my Rock with guitars in, thank you.

What's most disappointing is that Lostprophets used to be a much rawer, heavier band. What they are now is supremely polished and of course suited to Bob Rock twiddling their knobs (and sliding their sliders). Now they sit quite neatly in with the current wave of pop-rock (emo and friends) in a similar way to Bon Jovi fitting in with Hair Metal in the 80s. Not that I think that's in any way a bad thing, but maybe they also need Desmond Childs to make them a better lyrical prospect and transform them into world - beaters. Oh, and turn the guitars up, please.

          • Eric Cartman says: Weak!

It's a very average album. I'd be amazed if any of them broke a sweat writing or recording it, so Prophets-by-numbers is its duration.

At least 'Start Something' was a step on in terms of production and structure, however commercial and compromising it sometimes felt. This is just 'Start Something' Mark 2 minus the really killer tunes.
It doesn't have an ounce of indentity to it, it just sounds like everything else.

I find the fact that Kerrang gave this 5/5 the funniest admission by a magazine ever - ie we write about stuff we know is going to sell, rather than what is good. All consumer magazines have to think this way to a certain degree, but to give this the same rating as, say, And Justice For All or Vulgar Display Of Power, is frankly laughable and rips a big hole in any kind of journalistic integrity the metal comic had left.

          • ^^^^^^

            is that true?
            come on, be honest now.

            • I really like this album

It surprised me. I like Rooftops, and bought the album, not really expecting it to be as good as I hoped. But it is.
They've said as much themselves that they were fed up with metal, and wanted to go for massive pop choruses - which they've done. And done well.
It's not as easy thing to get right. If it goes wrong, it sounds contrived and messy, but when done properly, as this is imo, th songs take on a sense of meaning that more than likely isn't actually there.
              I'd give it an 8.

            • I find them pretty embarrassing.

It has nothing to do with opinion either. They are abysmal.

As for elitist snobs; they really get my goat.

            • I know, a bit harsh

sorry. Its wasnt meant to be personal.

Its just very frustrating that some male model clothes horses basically get smeared all over the press whilst playing kiddie songs (do they honestly think like the lyrics suggest they do? I mean the lyrics are sub-primary school drivel. And they're in their thirties, not about to start their gcse's!) So I read this site for interesting music reviews (there's a This Heat box set out..review?), not what I might expect to hear blaring out of top shop if I'm walking past. So you can expect mags like rocksound, big cheese, kerrang, nme etc. to do positive reviews, but not DiS. I thought there was some semblance of a bullshit filter here.

So I'm confused when it actually gets a relatively good rating.

Lets not kid ourselves, this is fucking terrible music.

        • The first two albums

were pretty good. I don't even like one track on this :(

          • "you can expect mags like rocksound etc...

to do positive reviews, but not DiS".

Surely it is positive that, knowing fully well that DiS has a reputation for credibility and that Lostprophets do not, the reviewer chose to write what they truely thought about the album rather than giving some holier-than-thou indie-posuer stock review?

            • ..

its funny hearing you all debate this as if this record even constituted music.

no malice, nothing personal, its just not even on the radar of anything to do with exciting music.

          • i agree

tey used to be ace, but now theyve gone all emotryhards. theyre not original anymore.

            • I think Rooftops (a liberation broadcast)

is really catchy. But annoyingly.ok i admit i bought Last Summer, but hat band have never really 'done it' for me.

            • Of course

it constitutes as music. Perhaps not exciting or even good music, in your opinion and probably many others, but the only reason to not classify it as music would be elitist snobbery

              • if elitist snobbery

is what were calling pulling up bands who are taking being breath-takingly bad to new levels, then sign me up. Im an an elitist snob! Fantastic! That means I think lostprophets (no space, pretty edgy) are sopping wet gash!

                • .....

this isnt to do with opinion, its to do with being making music which is worthwhile to people other than meat-headed chavs and footbal fans.

lets get real people, if the radio 1 dj's are getting excited over it....

this dannykelly guy obviously feels bad he likes this shit and is trying to justify himself, but to be honest thats like trying to say you didnt eat the last biscuit when theres
                  crumbs
                  all
                  over
                  your
                  face.

                  • that is quite profound...

wrightylew, i will be quoting that phrase in the coming weeks, nail on the head.

                  • agreed

there's nothing wrong with being elitist, i don't think you should apologise for wanting to listen to music with some kind of integrity and genuine passion. Other than the new lostprophets rambling into faux-angst cliche, so much production there is no music, and stupid fucking haircuts. Downhill since the first album, which I love and would defend to anyone, it may seem quite juvenile in retrospect but that is the charm of it, six bored kids making some music for the love of it, rather than to line their pockets and have 14 year old fan girls "screaming their hearts out".

                    2006 lostprophets = gash

                    proud to be called elitist.

                    • I like Lostprophets

and don't feel the slightest bit bad about it. I'm aware that does sod all for my credibility, but then I'm not at all interested in credible. I'm interested in listening to music I like.

I think you are all missing my point; I can see how you wouldn't like the music Lostprophets make. I can see how you would hate it and think that its shit. It would be stupid to refute people's right to such an opinion. But to imagine that there is some objective means of measuring the quality of music (outside of technical ability, which does not necessarily indicate enjoyable music) is not just elitist, something you don't have a problem evidently, but ridiculous too.

It's always to do with opinion.

                      • .....

yes i've missed your point, because........given your opinion, its almost like your view doesnt count anymore to us elitist snobs. you've proved your not worthy of free-choice, and therefore it should be withdrawn from you.

there arent many bands that make me feel this way, but i make the odd exception.

        • I have no inclination to ever listen to this album in it's entirety

but the song they played on Transmission made me lol. "Everybody's screaming, everybody's bleeding..."

          • I'm not worthy of free choice?

It's impossible to have any sort of discussion with some people...

            • ....

yes, free choice shoudl be (temporarily) withdrawn from you, and until youve earned it again, you should probably be assigned a listening officer to "assist" you through your musical life until you can be re-integrated into civilised society.

              • Hmmm

I'll take that as the joke I hope it is an not bother commenting on this anymore.

            • was that directed at me?

              • No

it was directed at the idea that I should be re-educated musically and then re-integrated into society...

                • ok. Well my comment was completely unrelated to you.

I haven't read any of the comments.

                  • I like Lostprophets

Always have. Though, in retrospect, FSOP isn't all that good. When six bored kids with no intention of lining their pockets decide to make music, they generally just faff about doing what they want, not really bothered about whether it's good or not. But when money and a record deal are involved, they generally tend to up the ante, generally meaning better music.
Haven't heard the new album yet, but if this review is correct and it's all about big pop choruses, I'm sure it'll be alreet.
The video to 'Rooftops' is hilarious though.

                    • erm....

Faffing around and doing what you want is exactly how you should feel about making music, you should give a shit about the money or the record deal, have you never heard of a DIY ethic or are there far too many stars in your eyes???

                      • ahem

of course i meant you SHOULDN'T give a shit about the money or the record deal.

                        • Yes darling, I have

heard of the DIY ethic, but I'm really not sure it's terribly suited to hardcore (or whatever you'd like to call Lostprophets back in the day) bands like Lostprophets. I'm sure it's perfectly suited to The Others, but Lostprophets seem to have some actual ambition, and want to get their music heard by as many people as possible, and I'm sure, if you were in a band, you'd be quite interested in trying to make a bit of money out of it too, wouldn't you?
All I'm saying is that generally, when a record deal and thousands of pounds are at stake, bands tend to polish and hone their sound far more than DIY bands. Which, in Lostprophets case, has turned out to be for the better, as the last two albums are far superior to the first (I've now heard the new one and agree with the review).

                          • Seriously...

what the fuck? DIY started in hardcore bands, get an education right now, go and learn about Minor Threat, possibly the most famous hardcore band with a DIY ethic, it's bands like "The Others" that have destroyed that ethic with drug riddled "rockstar" ambition. You clearly do not understand what I mean when I say DIY. DIY is about making music for music's sake, the only money you make is to cover costs for recording or to fund a tour, it is never about profit, and is normally done through a record label, but with no contract for a certain number of albums or any of that stupid shit that gets tied in with being in the music "industry" (never have 2 words next to each other made me feel sicker).

Bands with a DIY ethic have more fucking ambition than the stupid fucking Lostprophets have in their stupid fucking fringes, its an ambition to create affecting challenging music, be part of a music scene and community, to be a MUSICIAN, not sell out stadiums and go on Top of the Pops.

And no I fucking wouldn't be interested in making a bit of money out of it, I have been in and out of bands since I was 14 and have never given one single solitary shit about being paid more than i need to cover my train fee or petrol, and maybe have a beer.

Music is fucking art, it's about passion and soul, it's not about polish and money, and it is not a fucking industry.

                            • To me,

it's like they are an empty energy, with no personality. I wouldn't give much credit to this band either.

                            • what a naive view,

not that I disagree with the idea of quality music, music for music sake, which I am 100% for it.

Are you sure you ever were in a band? Sounds like an opinion of a bedroom dreamer. Even if you ever were in bands, surely you didn't want to do much. (and I'm not talking about 'making profit').

                              No offence inteded though.

                              • What an odd response....

I'm not even quite sure what you mean by "you didn't want to do much"??? what is there to being in band beyond writing and recording music and playing gigs? seriously? I'm certain I was in a band, I don't think you have an idea of what it is like though.

No offence intended is a strange thing to write at the end of a comment too. Especially when all your comment essentially says is "I agree that music should be good, I don't think you have ever been in a band". Nice contribution, i do enjoy being called a liar by people who have read (at the most) 2 posts on a website.

        • Hate Them!

Hate Them Hate Them Hate Them Hate Them Hate Them Hate Them Hate Them Hate Them etc

        • It's the

FUCKING Lostprophets,it's exactly what it says on the tine...hooky catchy sugar rock songs...end of.

          • Daniel -

it doesn't take an elitist moron to tell me or you that Lost Prophets are a terrible band - a band that completely sold out. There is nothing of any musical interest here; nothing that hasn't been done before by better bands.

They're from wales - why are all their videos set in New York? And it surprises me too that they don't get properly lampooned on this site by the reviewers. They should, as they fucking stink.

        • Lostprohets is not emo

That's one thing wrong about this review. Anything else is alright. You can say they are Bon Jovi and cheesy '80s pop, but they are never close to emo.
