More bands for Reading/Leeds, good ones this time...

As happens every year, the Carling Weekend line-up first off usually looks like crap that we used to like a few years ago when no-one else cared, then these bands release a string of overhyped singles and then find themselves headlining, without having anywhere near a full set of hits. Or they're bands who seem to play everywhere, every year, so their performances aren't particularly special anymore. But never fear because just as the weekend tickets sell out, they always announce some of the greatest bands on the planet and make the festival sound like it's going to be nearly as good as Coachella or Lolapolooza, well, almost...

Most notably, there's a headline set from MC5 who've played a few shows recently, some of which featured Evan Dando fronting the seminal band; the return of Soulwax, whose new album drops later this year; and no that isn't a mistake, fellow belgian oddballs dEUS are back, rejoice!

Radio One Stage

Reading Friday / Leeds Saturday
Super Furry Animals
Soulwax
Peaches
The Donnas
Razorlight

Reading Saturday / Leeds Sunday
MC5 (feat. Evan Dando?)
80s Matchbox B-Line Disaster
The Ordinary Boys
Har Mar Superstar
The Icarus Line
The Bronx
Bloc Party

Reading Sunday / Leeds Friday
Auf Der Maur
British Sea Power
dEUS
22-20s
The Stills
Dogs Die In Hot Cars

And also, new additions over on the Mainstage...

New Found Glory (Reading Sunday / Leeds Friday) Young Heart Attack (Reading Saturday/ Leeds Sunday)

Congrats to Bloc Party for getting on the bill, it isn't easy for new british bands in these times of corporate tie-ins and agents of the mainstage headliners seemingly getting to fill up the rest of the bill.

DiScuss: Excited yet? Anyone know if the new dEUS record will really be out before the year is out? Who else should they add to the Radio1 stage? Does this bill represent the best in modern alternative? A lot of overhyped tripe? Worth £105? Is the Radio1 tent a good place for DiS readers to meet up?

I finally got a ticket, and then bloc party are confirmed.
yesss.

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line...

the radio one tent always has shit sound though. savage

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line...

nah sounds quite good right at the back and right at the front
it's gonna be fucking ace on saturday

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line...

dEUS are the only band who've reduced me to tears every time I've seen them. In a good way, mind.

Someone PLEASE tell me they're playing Glasto...

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line...

That's only because I've been tweaking your nipples with a monkeywrench throughout. According to www.isufferrock.com (the most anal dEUS site in the whole world (news items normally go down to such infinitessimal details as 'Tom Barman has a nasty cough' or 'Danny Mommens wears jeans with 'coffee' stain on left inner thigh'), it's just gonna be Reading/Leeds, but there's gonna be a tour in early 05. The midwife will get busy.

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line...

Just to superflusously add to all the other posts:

dEUS! dEUS! dEUS! dEUS! dEUS! dEUS! dEUS! dEUS! dEUS! dEUS! dEUS! Oh my god dEUS! dEUS! dEUS! dEUS! dEUS! dEUS! dEUS!

But I'm not going to Reading - hopefyully they'll add some other shows around that time.

dEUS are incredible.
Tom Barman is a genius.

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line...

I'm Just so happy that the Super Furries are playing. My ticket doesn't seem like a waste of money anymore

Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line, Bloc Party, Stills...

You've listed every new band on the Radio 1 stage that was added at the same time last week - except for The Wildhearts. Please fix.

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line, Bloc Party, Stills...

Maybe they were so low down the bill that Sean had stopped reading before he reached them. Shame they're so low down, but I'm sure they will be amazing whatever time they're on, if the recent UK tour was anything to go by. I'd have gone to Reading anyway, but it's definitely a welcome addition.

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line, Bloc Party, Stills...

that line-up fills me with such rage, the wildhearts beneath: Soulwax, Peaches, Graham Coxon, Razorlight.
It defies belief. The Wildhearts had four top 30 singles in the last few months. and fuck knows how many over the years.
Soulwax is the one that gets me, a cult band who made a decidedly minor impact four years ago? gah. Still they're quite good, but even so.

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line, Bloc Party, Stills...

Then again, it must be three years now that they've been trying to get back on the Reading bill again. It's a positive sign that they're there at all. Seriously, the kind of live shows they're playing at the moment I wouldn't be surprised if they won quite a few people over and started to move up the bill over the next few years. Having been seeing them live on and off for about the last eight years (I think), right now they're the best I've ever seen them.

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line, Bloc Party, Stills...

Oh, unquestionably, they were quite, quite brilliant at Hammersmith. Tight as fuck, and far better than the forum in 2002 (and they played Dangerlust).
Seems a shame that getting this good with John Poole is at Danny McCkormack's expense, still yo yo's and chasers were very cool, hope to see him again soon

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line, Bloc Party, Stills...

It's only at Danny's expense through his own doing. It's a shame, but Jon Poole is a God amongst men and look what it has done for the band... they (shock!) like each other now and they're not screwing up every five minutes anymore. Being a Wildhearts fan never used to be easy.

The Yo Yos were fantastic though, you're right, although I thought the Chasers EP was terrible... nonetheless, I agree that it would be good to see Danny onstage again... provided he can keep himself in check.

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line, Bloc Party, Stills...

Chasers was very half-arsed, but bouyant, it was essentially a demo that hinted at great things. Once I got used to the idea that "Life Goes On" wasn't a Poison cover it does it for me every time.
It's a real shame he's such a fuck-up because he can knock out pop-punk better than pretty much anyone else (Dancin' on Coupled With is astinishingly good).
Love John Poole as well, a great man, signed my fag pack in a pub before the gig.
They did the intro to "Cheers" sitting on the drum-riser, then did a drunken sprint to each mike for the start, then played Everlone. Transported me to Heaven for twenty minutes of the encore

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line, Bloc Party, Stills...

I guess the reason I mentioned it was that the article didn't list a selection of the new bands on the second stage - it listed every single band except for The Wildhearts.

And yep, they are top live at the minute... hopefully as well as existing fans, there will be people there that are curious/too drunk to move already/used to like them and have turned up out of interest etc... last year some of the best stuff I saw that weekend came from getting in the tent early, such as The Futureheads.

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line, Bloc Party, Stills...

I always thought The Wildhearts would be perfect for festivals precisely for that reason - they've got so much history that many people will remember the old stuff and be curious. They could pull quite a big crowd of festival-goers that wouldn't bother paying to see them headline a show of their own.

I've no idea why they were left out of the news article - best ask Sean I guess. Probably just an innocent mistake.

Go out and buy "Worst case Scenario", then "The Ideal Crash", then "In a Bar, Under The Sea". Just delightful. Then, if you love it so, go and buy "My Sister = My Clock" - weird but great. Then try to collect their old singles as there are many many great b-sides.

Sound: Hard to describe, but it's pop-art-rock-spice...
and very very nice with a pint of Stella, De Koninck, delerium Tremens or whichever you choose.

dEUS are the greatest band on the planet. F*cking hell it's gonna be good to have em back. I hear there is a new album on the way before the end of 2004 (which is the reason for the Festival appearance!), but they have parted company with Island Records after 12 years with the label...(and only 3 albums...which I guess is the reason).

that's the first confirmed SOULWAX date! You can find all about soulwax on http://www.kevinenjoyce.com/soulwax ...

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line, Bloc Party, Stills...

Nice site. And thanks to a combination of your jukebox and my Real Audio wave recorder, I finally have a copy of 'Cut Some Slack'. So thanks!

oooh, dEUS!! I love dEUS but I hate festivals, Ararararaggghhh!!!

They must be playing more dates in the UK soon, pleeeeeeeeeeeease tell me they are!

Anyone hear the Magnus stuff? (Tom Barman and CJ Bolland) It's not *bad* but it's not dEUS, obviously. Fills the gap nicely while I wait though!

deUS brilliant obviously, though I feel since deUS split up, this more likely just to be just Tom Barman and Guy Van Nueten. They have been touring together. I reckon it's just easier for the Mean Fiddler to put deUS as the name and people know who they are.

MC5, now there's a band. I saw them play at the 100 Club last year with Ian Astbury and Lemmy. Will definitely be there for that

Re: Reading/Leeds Adds: dEUS, SFA, MC5, Soulwax, Iccy Line, Bloc Party, Stills...

dEUS didn't split. Check out www.deus.be - tons going on, with a new album (including Craig Ward by the sound of it) most definitely happening - fingers crossed this year...

Apparently MC5/DKT are using guest vocalist Mark Arm (Mudhoney) and Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees)
