Curtis film on the Cannes cards

Artists: Joy Division
Cannes 2004 may be memorable for some British film with spunk in it, but the festival has also exposed talk of a film documenting the life of Ian Curtis.

A movie about the Joy Division vocalist is currently in the planning stages, and should be produced by Amy Hobby with a little help from a guy called Neal Weisman. Any ideas? No, me neither. Still, it transpires that Mr Weisman is a good mate of Tony Wilson, the ex-Factory Records boss who signed Joy Division in the first place.

Weisman told trade magazine Variety: ""Ian Curtis was a tragic romantic in the classic sense of the word. He always thought he would be famous as some kind of poet and die by his mid-20s, and that's what happened."

Apparently Moby will co-ordinate the music for the film. Whoopee-do.

Hmmmm
Romantic poet? We shall see.
I love the music, but it's hard not to notice his nazi sympathising. Even his wife admitted that he was a notorious racist. Like I say, nowt to do with the music- but perhaps making a film celebrating him for the sake of him and not the band he was in is a bit pish.

Re: Curtis film on the Cannes cards

I agree. Who on earth cares about the life of the guy beyond the music and lyrics of Joy Division? That's like making a documentary of the childhood of Richey Edwards. For voyeurs only.

Curtis film on the Cannes cards

about 99.9% of people under 16 have no idea who joy division are. maybe this could help?

Re: Curtis film on the Cannes cards

untrue, i love 'em.

I doubt it would win them many younger fans, considering the subject matter, and the fact that it'll probably have a distribution limited to arthouse cinemas, bypassing the Odeons and Vues completely. And that goes double if they stick an 18 certificate on it - not that I guess that dissuades many kids, mind.... :)

Curtis film on the Cannes cards

#shakes head in disbelief# is nothing sacred anymore? the guys been dead for 24 years, the rest of joy Division have moved on, just leave the poor guy alone.

[ note - JD are probably in my top 5 bands ever, so this is by no means an insult to anyone involved with the project - it's just best to leave things be]

Curtis film on the Cannes cards

It will be awful. You can guarantee it 24 hr party ppl was ok but it didnt have ideas about documenting curtis's life.

Curtis film on the Cannes cards

fucking moby involved?? jesus christ...

Re: Curtis film on the Cannes cards

I made a shot film and entered it in Tropfest - one of Australia's biggest short film festivals...

I used a fair bit of Moby for soundtrack ambience and background music. He's not as shit when there is stuff to look at as well.

He's expensive, you know? Well, the Copyright of his music is, anyway...

Re: Curtis film on the Cannes cards

short films always freak me out.
as they have little or no apparent meaning, but then when i try to analyse what happened they appear to have a deep, philosophical and topical meaning.

Re: Curtis film on the Cannes cards

I saw a short film about some English guy pretending he was French and taking his kid sister to the cinema and scoring with some hot French chick there...

...the guy was that twit from My Family.

I howled with laughter throughout.
I want to score with a hot French chick.

I heard that after the success of that film with the spunk in, there's plans to feature a couple of cumshots in this Curtis flick... who wouldn't want to see Peter Hook firing a big jizzy pile camerawards?

Curtis film on the Cannes cards

"He's not as shit when there is stuff to look at as well."
- what a resounding endorsment of his musical talent...

Re: Curtis film on the Cannes cards

Thank you.

Curtis film on the Cannes cards

if Justin Timberlake can play Johnny Rotten, my money's in JC Chavez for the Ian Curtis role...

Re: Curtis film on the Cannes cards

mmm, but the only difference is i'd quite look forward to seeing him hang from the kitchen ceiling - it'd take all the tragedy out of the event and turn it into a party.

Re: Curtis film on the Cannes cards

hahaha. thats mint.

but anyway.. moby?
