Watching 'Spun' the other day and I heard a cover of 'The number of the beast' by Iron Maiden.
I think it was being done by John Frusciante.
Definitely one of the best covers of all time.
Radiohead did a live version of 'Nobody Does it Better' by Carly Simon a few years back for MTV. It was around OK Computer period, I think for 'Most Wanted'.
yeh they do that cover quite a lot. the 'wonderwall' cover by ryan adams was pretty great, and NIN didn't do too badly with joy division's 'dead souls'.
it was actually by zwan, sung by the guy from chavez. napalm death - nazi punks fuck off, faith no more - let's lynch the landlord, ruth copeland - gimme shelter, dillinger escape plan - come to daddy and the gourds - gin & juice are all up there.
what's the name of the sting song he covered? the cover is great, but christ knows what the original sounds like. apparently the guy from busted's 'other' band have covered johnny cash's cover of hurt. nice one dude.
Definately Cash with hurt. How much more heartfelt and touching can you get with a laimo, fake angsty metal original? He's the master of covers though, I mean making a Sting song good?
Yeah, it's probably got to be the Pixies' "In Heaven..." for me. I also really liked the White Stripes' "Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" but I have a feeling I may well be alone in that department...
Nah, I really like it to. It's made it onto the covers album I'm compiling, which if anyone's interested, currently looks like this:
No Doubt - It's My Life
Foo Fighters - Down in the Park
GNR - Live & Let Die
Orgy - Blue Monday
Gun - Word Up
EMF - I'm A Believer
Ash - Get Ready
Black Crowes - Hard to Handle
Offspring - Smash It Up
NIN - Metal
RATM - Renegades
Buffalo Tom - Going Underground
Gary Jules - Mad World
FLC - We Have All the Time in the World
Wonder Stuff - Dizzy
White Stripes - I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself
Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams
POTUSA - Kick Out The Jams
Radiohead - Nobody Does it Better
Flaming Lips - Knives Out
Faith No More - Easy
The Wildhearts - White Christmas (bonus hidden track :) )
If you're gonna have a Foo Fighters track, I think it must be "Baker Street". Not saying it's the best cover ever, but its good. Especially for the Foos, who I don't like at the best of times. Their "Have A Cigar" rocked too... infact, they're a damn good band when they're not playing their own songs! :-)
I was just about to say Foo Fighters covering Pink Floyd's 'Have A Cigar' is fucking superb. And their own songs are great too....provided they were releaesd pre 2001...
fuck off telling me to grow up - i voiced an opinion, MY OWN - which im completely entitled to. you clearly disagree. if you disagree, perhaps voice this disagreement in an eloquent manner, rather than being a patronising, condesending and downright arrogant twat. i didnt say "the original was so shit and what i say goes and anything any1 else thinks is wrong" did i?
no, so therefore i dont deserve to be told to grow up. if anything, your partronising comment has only served to make YOU look like a muso, rather than me.
I'm sorry but reel big fish's take one me is truly the greatest, im jut surprised no one has mentioned it yet, but Ryan Adam's Wonderwall is great too.
if i was making such a compilation (and it is likely) then i'd probably have:
Ash: 'Gimme Some Truth' instead of 'Get Ready',
White Stripes: 'Stop Breaking Down' instead of 'Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself'
Robert Wyatt doing 'I'm A Believer' instead of EMF (or better still Robert Wyatt doing 'Love' by John Lennon...hang on wasn't 'Shipbuilding' originally a Costello song? Well if so that as well...)
Flaming Lips: 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' instead of 'Knives Out'
and perhaps throw in Cinerama's 'Yesterday Once More', Melt Banana's 'Monkey Man' and some of the few thousand others that are really good...
how about 'introduction to charlie' by melt banana? the damned's 'neat, neat, neat' played at twice the speed. nice. and while we're at it, tatu's cover of 'how soon is now' and daphne & celeste's version of 'school's out', just for a little pop subversion.
and the Melt Banana version of Kraftwerk's 'Showroom Dummies'! Or the Sesame Street song 'Everybody Wash'!
on a theme tune tip, The Dickies 'Banana Splits (Tra La La Song)', Ikara Colt's 'White Horses' and The Breeder's version of 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer'...
and for that matter (tho not a themetune) - the Breeders' cover of "Happiness is a Warm Gun" too - leaves you with absolutely zero reason to ever put the Beatles' original on again after hearing it....
(was 'Head To Toe' the breeders' own song, too?)
and funny the damned and melt-banana were mentioned in the same breath there too: the cover M-B played live last year of "Love Song" was an absolute fucking riot :D
and their version of "we will rock you". and "sufing usa"...they do seem to pick the best covers to do, that lot ;)
'surfin usa' - off "15,000 Miles at Light Velocity", a live-set album on Tzadik, after 'Charlie' came out
'we will rock you' - off a recent Queen tribute lp, dunno the name ("Thunderbolts & Lightning" possibly, or that may be another one) or label though...
both are likely to be about on soulseek tho, i ought to see if love song turned up there too..
i thought MB covered 'Killer Queen' on that 'Dynamite With a Laserbeam' Queen tribute compilation, although that's probably the one you mean, i guess. dunno where to find it though.
And i'll try and get round to buying a copy of '25 Bands cover 25 Songs To Trash Their Way To Sesame Street' or whatever it's called.
Robert Wyatt - I'm A Believer
Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind
Wildhearts - Cheers
Caffeine - You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)
Fear Factory - Dog Day Sunrise
Napalm Death - Nazi Punks Fuck Off
Faith No More - Easy
Idlewild - I Found That Essence Rare
The Field Mice - Burning World
The Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson
Silver Sun - Too Much Too Little Too Late
The Cure - Foxy Lady
The Wedding Present - Pleasant Valley Sunday
Manic Street Preachers - Charles Windsor
Nirvana - Molly's Lips
Teenage Fanclub - The Ballad Of John And Yoko
The Human League - You've Lost That Loving Feeling
Girls Aloud - Girls On Film
Therapy - Isolation
The Jesus And Mary Chain - Ambition
Dinosaur Jr - Just Like Heaven
Oasis - I Am The Walrus
And probably a million others that don't come to mind yet.
Just don't say Candy Flip's 'Strawberry Fields Forever', please, NO. That is just wrong.
i would have to say slipknot- slipknot cause the only reason i bought that album when i first saw it, casue i had never heard any of their songs but i bought cause i liked the look of the cover
ill dump a few into the fray:
the damned: Help!
mr bungle: nothing compares 2 u
johnny cash: monkey gone to heaven
nirvana: love buzz
im surprised noones said muse: feeling good. or have they?
deftones: tired of sex (they did it at my request at wembley arena and almost split up cos the results were so bad)
and of cousre hurt.
Yep, you can't argue with Hurt, then again, you can't with Joyrider's version of Rush Hour, either. Oh, and just to continue my sad fascination with long split-up Irish bands; Mexican Pets version of the Black Beauty theme.
its actually a faithful cover, nothing extraordinary, but fucking good live. not too bad a song to finish a set with. fact is, its better than any of the attempts deftones have made at covering a song, and you have to admit, the list is long.
Agree in principle, but sometimes faithful covers work if you wouldn't normally put the song and the "coverer" together: i.e. Radiohead "Nobody Does it Better", FNM "Easy", Manics "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head", etc.
I heard Lostprophets doing Timberlake's "Cry Me A River" last night and that worked for that reason.
faithlful covers = satan? surely its paying tribute to the original band., when covered well. cant deny the power of 'found that essence', but then i guess you can, because by the sounds you have seen the song performed live.
deftones have covered ALOT of tunes, loads by weezer (say it aint so, only in dreams, in my garage to name 3 ive seen live), everlong, smiths - some girls, depeche mode, duran duran, jawbox - savory with jonah from far (as was). only that last one really sticks in my memory as decent. so before you get started on idlewild..who's boys dont cry by the way is excellent.
don't know if anyone's mentioned em yet, but here goes:
jimi's cover of 'all along the watchtower', and maybe even 'sunshine of your love by cream' (excellent listen when caned)
'dead flowers', stones cover by townes van zandt off 'the big lebowski' soundtrack
aphex twin's remix of nine inch nails' 'at the heart of it all' 'the beauty of being numb' - they sound nothing like the originals, so they might as well be covers
massive attack's cover of 'just be thankful for what you've got' by william de vaughn (i think)
the foo fighters cover of Have a Cigar with brian may is pretty damn good
also, i really liked placebos Bigmouth Strikes Again by the smiths and Running Up That Hill by kate bush
i know what you mean, sedna. that buzzcocks cover was never going to match up to busted's original material. why sully genius like 'crashed the wedding' with shit like teenage kicks?
sorry to be picky, but...Undertones cover, surely?
*awaits chant of 'smartass'*
...but it was a rubbish cover, no? i couldn't watch without feeling physically sick. Had to leave the room. Their PR group knows what they're doing don't they...
have u heard Million Dead's version of Girlfriend In A Coma...that is pretty cool like...it still sounds so much like them (MD) which rocks man. They played it live with Jonah from Far when i saw them supporting Thursday. Sounded Cool!
Re: Best cover ever?
That was pretty great.
Re: Best cover ever?
Re: Best cover ever?
Do like 'Wonderwall' though, and I hate the original.
But at the moment I'm *still* loving No Doubt's 'It's My Life'...
Re: Best cover ever?
that fucking wonderwall cover
it's only marginally better than oasis' version with that cunt Noel on vocals
Now, Cat Power's version............

You're right that 'Have A Cigar' is good though, but I'm not too sure about 'Baker Street'. Definitely prefer DITP, it's got a damn cool groove to it.
