Ocean Colour Scene have had a number of early mastertapes stolen from a lock up in Birmingham.

The Britpop outfit were a prominent force in the mid-to-late 1990s - 'The Riverboat Song' was used repeatedly on TFI Friday to introduce guests - have had the masters for that very song and many others stolen.

OCS, who recently lost original bassist Damon Minchella, are now derided for being dull and backward. Fellow Britpop survivors Oasis seem to be applauded for the same traits and are due to headline Glastonbury in June.

Ocean Colour Scene are scheduled to play the Nokia-sponsored Isle of Wight Festival this summer.

DiScuss: To those who hate OCS - have you honestly never owned one of their records?

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

I still quite like the stuff they did from Moseley Shoals to One From The Modern... mind you, the stuff they did before and especially since then has been worse than utterly shite.

First gig i ever went to was OCS. Mind you, i went to see them again a few years later and it very nearly put me off live music for life. 'twas awful.

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS los

I actually thought they had a couple of good tunes, but when they were bad they were poo on a stick.

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

Hand on heart, I have NEVER owned a record.
Nor have I seen them.
They are, were, and always will be shit x infinity.
My girlfriend has their famous album.
I've nearly dumped her because of it some eighteen times since Christmas.

Re: Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

i have since 'em twice - reading hexagon 1996 & Stafford V2000. The 2nd time the lead singer was 10 mins late coming on claiming he didn't feel very well and kept sniffing an awful lot. make of that what you will.
i don't think they're much cop but i do like 'the riverboat song'. hey shoot me.

Re: Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

I can honestly say that I have never even HEARD an OCS record. Individual songs, yes, album, no. Deliberate avoidance since the age of 16 or so.

I like the abuse the girlfriend gets on a regular basis, Mike. And she still wants to retain the damn thing? I don't know. Mind you, I'm lucky if I have a girlfriend who's even heard of any of the bands I'm into. At least you must have that luxury to some extent.

Re: Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

She doesn't like The Locust either.
WHAT is the WORLD coming to!?

Re: Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

Mine likes Jet, and very little else. It's fucking obscene.

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

OCs pulled off some classic tunes (Riverboat, Hundred Mile High City, uh, some others), but the thing is that they've got no personality, unlike Oasis -

Jeez, this post might just come back to haunt me the first(and last) time i'll defend Oasis

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

come on

they're not *that* bad
they're not brilliant, but some of their songs have a fair few saving graces

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

Pity the poor sod that nicked them. In this case, surely the law should prosecute the robbed.

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

ha ha. ahhhhhhhh. i bought a massive OCS poster in the bargain bucket once.about 5 years ago, when i was itching to get my hands on anything that wasn't britney spears. well, i never got round to putting it up.thats my excuse. i'm gonna watch ebay, i reckon some'll try and sell them on there.

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

"getting my hands on anything that wasn't Britney Spears"? Personally, i'd rather wake up to her than some guy who thinks it's still 1970

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

no offense to britters, but she just doesn't do it for me. angelina jolie on the otherhand....wouldn't mind waking up next to her. failing those two, osc may just about get it.
x

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

i bought the greatest hits because i felt sad and nostalgic. i listen to the greatest hits when i feel sad and nostalgic. they hold absolutely no musical value whatsoever. but sometimes that's not what's important.

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

Despite my love for all things britpop, i have never owned an OCS album either.

They are shit. They were shit. They have always been shit.

Kula Shaker, Sleeper, Shed 7, Gene: all good.

Ocean Colour Scene: shite.

Re: Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

"They are shit. They were shit. They have always been shit.

Kula Shaker, Sleeper, Shed 7, Gene: all good"

woooahh!!! woah woah WOAH.....hold it right there..
It was all going so well until that point
sigh
*looks for brick wall to smash own head into repeatedly*

Is this what it's fucking come to now, ten years on? where Shed 7 are looked back on positively (even in the tiniest way)........wtf........OCS v duh Sheddoes, it's like comparing two different types of dog shit, which smells worse or something..

and then, KULA FUCKING SHAKER..........!
stop this! now!!!!

[i'll allow you the old Sleeper singles, but that's it...]

And in other stolen tapes related news...

Desc (one of the top 3 good edinburgh associated bands) are meant to be recording their album with a superstar producer by the name of albini. in chicago. after they finish playing their forthcoming american shows. I think. I can't really remember. I was a bit drunk when I was told, but i'm very much looking forward to hearing the results anyway.

Re: And in other stolen tapes related news...

You ought to mention that Desc realllly don't sound like OCS.

except now you don't have to!

saw them last month, they were rather good, must say.

Re: And in other stolen tapes related news...

Very good point; I really should have said that.

Especially since I'd been defending britpop about 2 posts above.

"desc are inspired by many things but to put their songs into context they have been said to sound like an acoustic sonic youth or ennio morricone on speed."
says the old sl records biography.

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

You know what this means! They'll never re-release remastered versions of their albums! Wicked!

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

Can't wait to see what happens in 2014. Everyone will deny ever owning a Franz Ferdinand (to name one) record. "I liked a tune or two, but they were shite".
The way all of a sudden everyone realized that britpop sucks scares me. It's like certain people have a brain in common.
By the way, britpop did not suck. Some britpop bands did.
Oasis, for example.

Re: Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

And Catch.
Anyone remember Bingo?
Haha.

Re: Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

Ahahahahahaaaaaaa
Toby Slater went to our school. Until pop stardom swept him off his barely-teenage feet, and then dumped him heavily (and a tad rightly) on his arse 6 months later. Aw bless!

ah Catch...comedy gold..

Re: Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

Britpop did suck! I can proudly claim to own a grand total of zero Britpop records, unless 'The Bends' counts which, let's face it, it doesn't. All the Britpop "era" did was make me pine for the glory days of the Smiths and the Cure and push my musical tastes further USA-wards.

Re: Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

Hehe, funny you say that actually..
I was thinking the other day of how Britpop-era music press used towould look down on the 'indie' music that had preceded it in the last 80s/early 90s & all its big, once-feted (by the very same papers) bands, with disgust and derision and as wholly inferior to (eg) Cast / Heavy Stereo / whichever rotten-end-of-Britpop toss was on the covers that week.

Fast forward to now, and the hyper-speed revisionism towards the 'general opinion' on Britpop (but meanwhile, oh no those deadly early-90s Morrissey singles, now *they* were great etc etc snore.. ). It's all the same again, just moved ten years on. And even Franz Ferdinand - all this mighty trumpeting in the press of their involvement with the glasgow underground/etc/etc for years - and, uh, how much coverage exactly *did* (to pluck out one name) the Yummy Fur get from nme all that time? Well...more than they'd have gotten the last few years if they were still going, I'll admit, but..
uh, i'm wandering off the point....I know the fickleness and trend-led nature of the press too....but it doesn't stop it being so awesomely disheartening, more than ever maybe
That "...brain in common" point was spot-on. I dunno...

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

OCS were great, i saw them v2000 chelmsford and they were wicked.

Hundred Mile High City is still one of my favourite tunes of the nineties, tis rockin.

Unfortunately most of their songs were really fucking boring, but when they were good they were proper good.

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

thats a shame about losing the masters, who-ever you are its gotta be a dampener. Hope they turn up.

'Marching already' i quite liked as a whole album. Had some great songs 'debris road' especially. It was after that they didnt really go anywhere special with the music.

they're headlining Guildford Festival

says it all really...

Re: they're headlining Guildford Festival

no they're not, they're second on the bill to UB40...how you doing Andy?

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

I own Moseley Shoals..! hehe... Hmm maybe those who stole their masters are actually aiming for them not to re-release any of them in the distant future. if that is the case, they must hate them so then.

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

"Oasis seem to be applauded for the same traits" - hang on there, Oasis haven't been applauded for anything publicly since 1997, and round my way they'd only achieve muted handclaps if they set themselves aflame whilst doing the polka.
Britpop was a terrible era for music. A creative drought based on reviving ideas alreadly stale by the end of the sixties, which is probably best forgotten. OCS managed to be the worst of a dire bunch: Kula Shaker, Reef, Shit Seven, Blur, Cast.
Hope someone dumped their tapes in a canal.

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

I think you have chosen the worst examples of the supposed 'Britpop' scene. How about Pulp, The Charlatans, Blur 'Modern Life Is Rubbish', Oasis 'Definantly Maybe', Suede, Elastica. Thats the real cream of the crop. Obvioulsy not forgetting Menswear and Northern Uproar!

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

Ocean Colour Scene are beyond awful. Thank god someone has done us all a favour, this will surely delay any new material being played for a bit.

We can use the time to construct special ear guards that filter out Ocean Colour Scene.

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

Ocean Colour Scene did give me one particular moment of joy. At Glasto '97 I walked past the signing tent to see the band sat there with a cue of lads eager to meet their idols! At which point I remembered a particularly shit OCS joke I had read. So walking up to the front shouting to get their attention I told them said joke:
Q: How many members of OCS does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: 3 to change the lightbulb and 1 to ask Weller how it was done in the 70's!
Amazingly they appeared not to know the joke and one of them even got up aggresively and challenged me. At which point members of the que joined in giving me a good kicking!!!
What happy memories!

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

Hmm.....

Well. Having grown up round there and having seen far too many OCS gigs (and never by design) I candefinitively say that not are they, and always have been, shite, they are an absolute embarassment to Birmingham.

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

hehe, Northern Uproar! What happened to them anyone know? james dean bradfield did backing vocals on some of their stuff if i remember.
There are worse bands from Birmingham than OCS, there must be?

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

OCS are excellent at what they do, check out their first 3 albums to get the gist. just because a bunch of indie kds don't like their 60's inspired mod rock gish doesn't mean it's crap. just as because everyone wants to balsl bloc party or who ever, does that mean that they superior. no accounting for taste.

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

can the same bloke who stole the master tapes go and steal there fucking guitars, amps and drums too so i never have too hear the (godforbid) news that these bunch of talentless twats are planning to release a new album. Also this same person should come forward to recieve his much deserved MBE.

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

Talking about Northern Uproar: I was playing in MCR throughout the whole Britpop scene (1994-1997), and the band i was in were touted by their manager Chris Whitehead, who allegedly used to do his own weight in coke every day, i went up to manchester a couple of years later to rehearse with a band i was session keyboading for, and the drummer and guitarist from NU had a rehearsal room in Ducie House round the back of piccadilly gardens. This was on the last day the rehersal studio was to be in business - they shut down the next day because Chris Whitehead had done a runner with all their cash and left them broke!!!

Anyone Ocean Colour Scene our mastertapes? OCS lose early recordings

you people obviously cannot appreciate good, quality music that doesn't pretend to be anything its not. its enjoyable, simple stuff thats catchy and fun. when was the last time radiohead could say that? its hilarious that people can knock the band when they don't own a recording, too. If it suddenly came cool to hate oasis, you all would. just coz OCS don't follow fads or trends and stick to their roots, doesn't make them bad. in fact i've seen them live and they took my breath away, its an amazing atmosphere. goodnight
