I would imagine that there are some pretty young easily influenced people on here looking for new music and if say someone like John comes along slagging off a band that he may not find to his tastes, then people may just think oh well he is old and gay and wise so i wont even bother listening to that band!!

brainlove, but I've been swayed, he seems really passionate and produces some really brilliant stuff. His a dick to argue with but so are alot of people. has some of the funniest, most opinionated and passionate writers around. Brainlove and Diver are just two such writers. It's the duty of decent music writers to make people think they're dicks, or cunts, or even a strange combination of both that I fantasise about having sometimes.

I think the most important traits to have if you want to write about music are
a) the confidence and passion to state your own opinions without being afraid of what other people might think about you
and
b) the confidence and passion to argue your ground when people disagree.
Regardless of what anyone thinks of him, the site wouldn't be the same without that kind of passion. And if Brainlove followed Emma_C's advice and didn't talk about bands he didn't like he wouldn't be doing his job properly.
I don't necessarily agree with all of Brainlove's views on music but I admire anyone with that kind of passion and especially the way he rails against blandness in music.
Having never ever met John, I've absolutely no idea whether he's a dick or not. But as a general rule, the world needs more opinionated, anti-apathetic people who are capable of making a cohesive argument and aren't afraid to piss people off.
